How to check if we need less than 2x upscaling with mpv to use SSimSuperRes instead of FSRCNN?
>>
>>62264492
Wat.
>>
>>62264499
If 2x or more upscaling, use FSRCNN shader.
If less than 2x upscaling, use SSimSuperRes.
With auto-profile.lua script or course. ;)
>>
>>62264533
I dont think you can do that. You need to create profiles based on video resolution.
>>
>>62264553
:(
>>
>>62264557
Its no big deal. Just create one profile for low resolution content and use SSSR with everything else.
>>
>>62264576
I am probably too stupid for that kind of math.
>>
>>62264533
Replace all 1.500000 with 1.000000 in FSRCNN shader, then it will be used only when upscaling factor is 2x+ (1.5x+ by default).
>>
>>62264639
>1.5x+ by default
Whoops, 1.33 by default.
>>
>>62264639
Oh, i forgot you could do that. I cant find nothing like that in my shaders though.
>>
>>62264639

>>

>>
>>62264692
Thats how doublers work.
>>
>>62264703
Ok! Is it part of the produced quality or perfect doubling is better?
>>
>>62264702
>>62264662
Its 1.500000 actually.
>>
>>62264733
No, that number is not a scaling factor
480*2 / 640 != 640/480
>>
>>62264710
you can't train neural networks to upscale to an arbitrary resolution, so you train them to exactly double the resolution

you then double the resolution however many times you want and then downscale it, and since mpv has a very good downscaler (mitchell) the output is almost perfect
>>
>>62264639
>1.000000
It should be 1.100000 (or 1.000001), don't set it exactly to 1.000000.
>>
>>62264294
How can I make mpv play a youtube playlist?

Looks like it does the same thing as SVP but with a deep neural net which means it's probably both a lot better but not gonna be real time any time soon unless someone gets really clever about it.

I wonder if binarization techniques can be applied effectively like in:

>>

>deep neural net which means it's probably both a lot better but not gonna be real time any time soon
Is it possible to use that to make 23.976 Hz -> 30 Hz so it matches 60 FPS displays? Is it possible to use it to 23.976 Hz -> 60 FPS on low resolution sources?
>>
>>62265494
I exclusively use bpgview and convert all my images to bpg.

Other image formats need to die already.
>>
>>62266833
I mean effectively this just replaces the motion vector estimation by convolution kernel estimation, which is easier to train for and easier to work with. Like with motion vectors, there's no need to estimate the convolution kernel on the full res image - you could do it on a downsampled luma version.

The main problem is going to be _applying_ the convolution on the full sized image. For accurate results, it needs to be big enough to cover the window of interest; which in their application means 41x41. Even at 1080p and using compute shader shared memory, 41x41 is way too slow for realtime; so the main challenge is optimizing this final convolution pass.

The main idea I have in mind is trying to get it to shape the convolution kernel into a particular direction, or perhaps apply an integer offset to the convolution kernel. This would allow us to use a significantly smaller kernel while still benefitting from a good coverage area. (Important for “large” motion distances)
>>
Don't fucking do it. You already have a lot of tscale scalers and already rekt madvr in that aspect. What else do you want? Whats you problem? You're program is already very good as it is and also gains more popularity every day. You can ride Vulkan hype for a while now. Take it easy, why you in such a rush? You already have GNU/Linux to you self. No one really cares about those super duper meme techniques. HDR is the next BIG thing. Everyone likes HDR. Just relax, okay?

If they could get it extremely light on motion artifacts and realistically low on performance cost, that would be absolutely glorious.
I would GLADLY sacrifice scaling detail and use bilinear just to get proper, wobble-free 60FPS. Even if it would take the full power of my computer to do so.

Blurring frames together is only useful if they're already high framerate. Otherwise it's ugly at best.

I couldn't possibly care about pissing off competition or anything of that sort. I just want such things wherever possible.
It would obviously be best if it could be made compatible with all decent players.

>>62267508
Youtube relies on your browser for sync. Browsers have a lot of trouble with sync. Pretty much any standalone player would be superior.

Looked into it a bit more. Looks like there's a newer version of the technique that uses separable convolution!! It's way faster!

Here's the author showing off the older non-separable technique:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3HLBexyb0U

Here's both the non-separable and separable techniques on his site (THERE'S VIDEO AND IT'S AWESOME!!):

The paper on the separable version:

I would be really surprised if any github implementations didn't rely on an actual deep learning framework (eg. Torch, Tensorflow, Theano, Keras, etc..).

Here's an implementation of a crappier technique from earlier this year, take a look at the software requirements.
https://github.com/neil454/deep-motion

>>62267260
>>62267423
They do different things. Smoothmotion attempts to make your source's framerate jive nicer with your display's framerate. This would actually "dream up" new frames and increase the framerate of the video. It literally says "motion interpolation" in the name, anon.

>>62267508
Maybe the 4k video is stressing out your GPU already and your system is unable to handle it with the mpv profile you have on?

Try downloading some 4k video and playing it that way or running mpv with
--no-config
(or just look at stats.lua).

>We used Torch [8] to implement our convolutional neural network. To achieve a high computational efficiency and allow our network to directly render the interpolated frame, we wrote our own layer in CUDA that applies the estimated 1D kernels. If applicable, we used implementations based on cuDNN [7] for the other layers of the network to further improve the speed. With a Nvidia Titan X (Pascal), our system is able to interpolate a 1280 × 720 frame in 0.5 seconds as well as a 1920 × 1080 frame in 0.9 seconds. Training our network takes about 20 hours using four Nvidia Titan X (Pascal).

That's actually pretty impressive, imo.
>>
>>62269327
Impressive, sure. But not fast enough for real time.
>>
>>62269438
Of course, far from it, and that's not even taking into account that the frame generation is achieved on a Titan X that's being pushed to it's limits (i.e. no room for video playback on top of that).

However that's still really fast for a new technique. Typically these things only get faster and faster as people figure out ways to improve on it. So take it as a good sign that we may hopefully see a practical real time solution some time in the future.

I think you can load the video_ts folder into mpv as a dvd? You may have to make sure your ffmpeg is compiled with support for dvd though.

It's kind of strange that VLC is the only media player that seems to make playing video_ts folders easy (just drag and drop the folder into VLC).
>>
>>62269573
MPC-HC also allows loading DVD/BD directly by folder or drive. Even allows menu navigation, like I'm pretty sure VLC does.
It's not auto-detected like that, but it is still straightforward.

I've never seen any mplayer/fork do DVD/BD menu navigation. Not that there's much need for it, but still. Kind of silly.

Also, how can I have mpv not close when the file it's playing is finished?

I'm trying to control an mpv instance with the JSON IPC interface. I'd like to open mpv like

You could also try looking at the logs (add

So I realized my understanding of profiles was wrong and now I need to sanity check my new understanding to make sure it's correct.

If you have something like this:
profile=myprofile1

[myprofile1]
fs=yes

[myprofile2]
fs=no

Then you do
mpv --profile=myprofile2

Then it will be effectively the same as doing this?:
profile=myprofile1
profile=myprofile2

[myprofile1]
fs=yes

[myprofile2]
fs=no

in that order?

In other words it translates to:
fs=yes
fs=no

and the fs=no overrides the fs=yes because it comes last?

Is there a way to tell mpv not to load other profiles (like if you have a special profile that you only want to use in some cases)? Something like
mpv --no-config --profile=myprofile2

except without also blowing away your input.conf and other config files?
>>
>>62269327

>>

MPlayer and mplayer2 both support DVD menus, as did earlier version of mpv. The code was deleted from mpv because nobody wanted to maintain it.
>>
>>62275049
Literally never. The opengl-hq options affect vulkan too
>>
>>62275830
Exactly

>Is there a way to tell mpv not to load other profiles
You can have your special profile un-do the other profile
>>
>>62275963
That seems kind of brittle but I guess it can be done with something like:
profile=default

[default]
fs=yes

[negate-default]
fs=no

[special]
profile=negate-default
ontop=yes

[special2]
profile=negate-default
profile=opengl-hq

and simply calling
mpv --profile=special2

It feels like there ought to be a better way. Maybe I'll make a git issue. I definitely gotta rewrite a bunch of stuff on the arch wiki that I fucked up because of this.

Do you know if it's possible to achieve this or something similar using auto-profiles.lua?
>>
How do I permanently load a subtitle file without drag/dropping every time?

Is HQ profile worthless for video that's high quality to begin with? I don't see a difference in 1080p video with high bitrate. Also, how can I jump to a specific frame for screenshot comparisons?

>>62276253
IMHO it's much more useful for videos that need upscaling. If you're using 1080p video on a 1080p monitor there is effectively no difference (sans the subtle difference in chroma upscaling).

deband makes color gradient transitions smoother, display-resample keeps accurate video/audio sync, dxinterop uses directx for video presentation

no, all the settings you see in the manual go into the mpv.conf and input.conf (keybindings). The manual can be overwhelming so you can download the defaults and start customizing them and seeing what works and how, then after figuring out how it works, you start looking for more settings
>>
>>62282175
Simply because there are many more windows users. Sure, mpv is the only relatively viable option in Linux and in OSX, so if you take into consideration the fraction of users in those platforms using mpv than it'll probably give you a higher number than on Windows, but even the small windows fraction probably consists of more absolute users. This is just speculation though, but dxinterop is one of the most popular configs for sure so...

This technology is very far from being practical, anon.

Even if madshi were an accomplished researcher in deep learning (which he obviously is not given that he spends his time shitposting here and managing a closed source video player that underperforms mpv) it still wouldn't be doable any time soon.

I think there's hope that it could become practical some time in the future (and make no mistake, I am being optimistic about this) but it's still a long way off and we would likely need to see several more papers published between now and then (even then it might require a really formidable video card which most users probably lack).

What's a good VLC-like frontend for mpv? I don't like that minimalistic approach, it's the only thing holding me back from switching fully rn even as vlc continues to make all files it plays back sound like shit
>>
>>62287035
madVR. There are a lot of menus and you can click/tick EVERYTHING. It even has a volume rocker! :D

What? Literally all image viewers support it; imagemagick, ffmpeg, etc. all natively do, so do krita, GIMP etc.

Well yeah. Boosting volume in software, which is enabled by default, will do that.
It was actually funny just how many people tries to use that as a plus for VLC. 'Everything else is so quiet!' and whatnot.

Just disable volume boosting. Or whatever VLC calls it. Disable hardware decoding while you're at it. And driver dependent color space output, if you can find it.
Because if you want VLC then you should use VLC.
Mplayer types' minimalism will never fully go away. There's just too fucking many config options to even try to fit in a GUI.

Nigger, nobody recommended you use sourceforge.

It's been almost a year since I updated mpv. Anything significant happened?

It's working great for me. Really the only improvement I could think of is the ability to minimize or tile the window when in borderless mode. But I suppose that will never happen, right?

What's the best way to make a Lua mpv script ring the system bell? I want a ding when my webm's are finished encoding.

Are you the same person who asked this question a few weeks ago? Do you want me to copy/paste the changelogs again?
>>
>>62288597
That should be up to your window manager or desktop environment, not the program itself.
If you're using Windows, I've heard Autohotkey can do decent scripted window management.

>>62288836

No, I'm not that guy. And no, don't care for whole changelogs, just if it's anything really big.

>>62288858
>That should be up to your window manager or desktop environment, not the program itself.
Yeah, I suppose, but it's not. Windows is shit like that. It works if mpv is not borderless, though.
>>
>>62288912
Set a hotkey to toggle borders. You should be able to do that in input.conf
I mean, it's roundabout and adds an extra step, but it's a functional solution. Anything more on Windows would probably require WM replacement, third party programs (like those multimonitor tools), or AHK scripting
>>
>>62288912 here
reading changes now
>Windows: window styles improvements (allow minimizing borderless/fullscreen window)
well at least there's that

Well, it's hard to summarize. mpv development moves very fast, a year is basically ages ago
>>
i have a shit laptop that has difficulty playing high quality videos.

What's the best media player that would help me with my situation?
>>
>>62290659
MPV has hardware accelerated rendering if your laptop is still new enough to support that thing. There's a config for slow computers so you should be fine.
