Download an easy to use distro of your choice, make a bootable USB stick with that ISO, boot into the live system and then just follow the installer instructions to install it
I recommend KDE Neon, but anything Ubuntu based will be really easy
Antergos is also easy if you want an Arch based system

Depends what you want and what platform you want to access it from. Other graphical options are windows remote desktop protocol (from the xrdp package, X forwarding over ssh (graphical programs will crash when you disconnect) or x2go (kinda like rdp but less microsofty) or xpra (like x2go but uses x264 to stream graphics instead of X forwarding).

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
No systemd (they've implemented their own init scripts system http://sourcemage.org/Init).
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (package build files) not found in the grimoire (repository of spells) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

Installing SMGL is easy, here's the simplified process:
>boot a live Ubuntu (or whatever) USB drive
>go to SMGL website and download compressed archive of the base system
>partition and mount partition(s)
>extract the archive onto the new partition(s)
>chroot, set root passwd, hostname, configure network and locale, write fstab, install grub/lilo
>reboot
>compile a kernel (preferably the newest stable one from kernel.org)
>update sorcery, grimoires and the build toolchain
>rebuild the system (hold spells you've already built, so you don't build them twice)
The install guide will hold your hand through the whole process http://sourcemage.org/Install/Chroot
Do the chroot method, since the regular live ISO method guide is out of date currently.

Here's a list of common commands: https://pastebin.com/i4DALaNV
>>
For those interested in some history, Source Mage was originally called Sorcerer (first released in 2000, the same year as Gentoo), but due to some problems (around 2002), Sorcerer split into 3 distros: Lunar Linux (pretty much dead), Sorcerer (fork by the original creator, he took it offline for some reason and killed it) and Source Mage (with most of the original dev team).
By the time Source Mage got off the ground (2002), Gentoo had already amassed a large and vibrant community, basically leaving Source Mage in the dust.
Since Gentoo had much more momentum at a critical time, Source Mage remained in it's shadow ever since.
That's the reason why Source Mage is largely unknown now compared to Gentoo, despite technically being as old as Gentoo.
http://sourcemage.org/History
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Mage#History

Despite all that, Source Mage is still a good distro.
The package management tools work well and there are still people working on them.
The problem is that the distro is so small right now, there are not enough people to maintain all the spells and keep them up with the upstream.
If you're going to install it, you should use the test grimoire (it's not bleeding edge, but it's quite up to date and fine for my needs at least).

-it's optimized for YOUR computer. Binary distros must use generic i686/amd64 optimizations for support on a wide range of hardware. On gentoo you can optimize for what your pc can do for possible speed gains in a lot of applications
-programs are configured for your needs via USE flags
-multiple versions of software are available to install. From a lot of libraries and runtimes you can even install multiple versions in the same this. This actually can matter a lot for developers.

>>
>>62266973
I don't think they are binary distros at all

If you try to think of them that way you quickly run into difficulty understanding the process, whereas it's much more natural to think of them as source based distros.

The files the package manager reads are not binary installation instructions they are instructions for building from source.

However it doesn't stop there. But consider this for example. Imagine if every binary you built on your Gentoo machine was 100% identical (bit for bit) to the binary compiled by anyone else. Wouldn't it then be reasonable for the Gentoo maintainers to offer an additional service whereby you can save time and download the binary instead? There is nothing lost or gained what you end up with is still as if you had compiled it yourself.

Would you then claim Gentoo is a binary based distro? I wouldn't as it still retains all of its benefits over true binary distros, but merely has an additional time-saving feature built on top of the source based package management system.

That's exactly what GuixSD and NixOS are.

>>

>>
>>62268003
$() basically gets substituted with the output of the enclosed command. So if you run xsel and it spits out "pornhub.com", then your alias looks like this after the substitution:

"pornhub.com" | sed s/hook/you/ | xsel && mpv --ytdl-format=worstaudio ""

Now the shell tries to evaluate the leftmost expression. "pornhub.com" is not a valid bash command, which is where the error comes from (no command with this name was found). The standard output (as opposed to the error output) of "pornhub.com" (the command that wasn't found) is an empty string. This gets piped into sed. sed takes the empty string, substitutes nothing (the string "hook" is not contained within the empty string) but also does not return an error, and pipes its output (empty string again) into xsel. Your clipboard now contains an empty string. xsel does not return an error, so the command after the && gets executed. That happens to be mpv. Only NOW does it substitute the $() with xsel's output, which is, as we established, an empty string. No file named "" (without the quotation marks) can be found, so mpv returns an error.

tl;dr : Partition resizing

Got a Windows 8 laptop a number of years ago, when I initially installed Linux I didn't make a very big partition (100GB on a 1TB HD) and I want to make it bigger (I only use the Windows half for gaming so I figured it should have most space but I have plenty left).
Due to how it came set up and some tinkering, this thing has like 11 partitions (wtf), and I've had some boot issues before after big updates or dealing with partition stuff (boot repair handled these pretty well usually). Once my partition got stuck read-only but I fixed it.
I'm just shrinking Windows and growing Linux (Ubuntu), so hopefully everything will be smooth, but is there a best way to go about this with minimal chance of fucking my shit up? Resize from Live USB? Resize from in Windows using its partition tool? Can I resize from in Ubuntu right now with GParted?

The only consistent difference between rolling and regular release Linux flavors is how often the kernel gets updated. Rolling means it gets a new "linux" pretty much whenever (in Arch's case, 4-5 times a month); regular means only once every 5-6 months or more slowly.

With non-kernel packages, it's always up to the whim of the maintainers.

>>
>>62271167
BSD init is a lot simpler. Instead of ordering and runlevels being done by way of symlinks in directories, BSD init has simple textfiles which just list all the scripts to be executed at the runlevel. The scripts are simpler, too.
It's less of a headache to manage but also less flexible.

more pukes the file contents to stdin just like cat and leaves you alone if the file lines are fewer than the terminal rows and it's better than less because of that for small files (at least for me)

For very short files (ones that take up less than your terminal's height), cat, more, and less are the same.

For slightly larger files (more than a screenful), more is just a slightly more awkward version of cat. less is ideal since its display/movement commands are the same as vim's.

less's search is also more powerful and less autistic than more's search.
>>
>>62272482
>For very short files (ones that take up less than your terminal's height), cat, more, and less are the same.
less is not the same because it doesn't exit like more, but waits for you to press q instead

Can anyone tell me the program that provides the "x is not installed, it can be found in the package y" kind of message that displays on some distros when you try to run a program from a package you don't have?

Hello!
I just installed Arch recently and I'm a newbie at all the packages to install.

How would I be able to double click executables instead of having to ./executable them every time I want to run them. I know I can just make .desktop's but I do not think that is necessary.
Thank you.

>>
>>62272508
Ah, you're right. Still, you can set less to behave like more/cat with small files by doing "less -F" (just one of less's many options). Or making an alias, or create defaults with the LESS environment variable (doing, for instance, export LESS='-F').

In this case, less's huge versatility makes it truly supersede more.
>>
>>62272531
Depends on your distro. `apt-file search` for Debian, Ubuntu etc, `pacman -Fo` for Arch, `dnf provides` for Fedora and don't know about others.

Hey /fglt/, first time here.
I've installed my first distro today, Linux mint xfce and I really like it. I'll start messing around and ricing tomorrow.
Earlier I faced a problem with GPU drivers: I installed TF2 but the menu was black. Loaded a map and i could like see white outlines and shadows. Obviously unplayable but I can't find a solution. The driver that mint suggest doesn't solve anything.
I have an Intel graphics 4000. Anyone has had a similar experience?
I'd really like to be able to play some comfy games on my ThinkPad. Thank you in advance.

Well for one you can't just "put the files on it" you have to make sure to actually "burn the iso image" to the disk.
and secondly that wouldn't be a GNU/Linux specific issue, just start searching for general information on booting from a virtual disk, if it's even possible. It might not be.
There might be other ways you can still get it installed though

dircolors, my friend.

I generally prefer using underlines and/or bolds rather than backgrounds.

You probably have a .dir_colors file in your home directory already. Just edit that, following the guides given in the file itself.

If you have a good text editor (like vim/neovim), the colors and styles will change as you edit them. You'll also be able to tell what filetype/directorytype is being made to look ugly. OTHER_WRITABLE, STICKY_OTHER_WRITABLE, or STICKY usually look like ass.

After you've successfully edited your .dir_colors file, just do
$ dircolors -b .dir_colors

And then open up a new terminal.

Aliases exist to make aliases. They are not made to overwrite commands. Stop doing it, or it will some day break your neck when you run `rm' and expect it to have some aliases -i or -I or -v flag. Same with other commands.

In your example, just alias l (or something else) instead of ls.

Here's my color scheme.

I tried really hard a while back to have not too bright, but still vibrant colors with enough contrast to all stand out against each other as much as possible and this is what I came up with.

It's a lot harder than it looks while still maintaining the correct color order (a lot of color schemes actually have incorrect color assignments). The red is a little bit on the pinkish side to avoid color conflicts, trying to make it more red looking makes some of the text blend in too much
The white is fairly dark to ensure that yellow highlighted text (like when using search in vim) stands out enough to read

Let me know if you think any changes improve the contrast, I'm always interested in making it better.

The example is actually bad b/c it starts shells (because of the pipe to lolcat), in most situations, you just type the command after -exec for example:
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -exec echo {} \;

There's also -execdir, which acts like you run the following command from the directory where the current search result sits.

There's also -ok and -okdir, same as -exec and -execdir, but it asks for confimation.

Are there any browsers that are lightweight and can still handle shitty facebook flash games? I swapped my Moms laptop (like 9 years old) to Lubuntu which made it usable again but her shitty flash games bog it down completely and won't run right in either Chromium or FF, which I think is kind of weird considering the laptop has the specs IMO to do that kind of thing (3GB of RAM, ATI3000 series card, 2.4GHz core duo)

is this better than appchanX? I like the features in appchan but it makes everything look like SHIT
>>
>>62275990
Appchan X is the better version.
>>

Not him but install said programs.
AdNauseam is like ublock with an overlay which randomly clicks ads, which kills the user-tracking/ad business model
4chanX is under active development, you get updates ever 1-3 days and they they try to fix any lil shit 4chan comes up with (like the recents new-threads-only-with-new-recaptcha-crap).

Anyone? Seems like pretty simple stuff I just don't know how to do it...surely you niggas aren't deleting long strings 1 letter at a time..right?

I'm using void, but it's bothering my OCD right now some packages aren't as up to date as I would like them.

>randomly clicks ads
Never understood why people fall for this, isn't this the actual opposite of privacy?
>>
>>62276058
what's stopping you from updating them manually?
just edit the PKGBUILD equivalents on void
>>
>>62276058
I thought about trying Void, but until it has something like AUR i just can't do it.

There's a profile of you, no matter if you click an AD or not. The benefits of clicking random ADs are:
a) Your profile turns into unusable garbage.
b) pic related

We don't make mistakes.

But there are probably a lot of different ways to deal with it. By default it should be using emacs hotkeys that I'm not very comfortable with

Personally I just have vi-mode on and use vi hotkeys. For more heavy editing I can just enter command mode and press V to open the command in vim and edit it there.
vim can also handle mouse input if you're into that sort of thing

How can I make firefox redirect me to https://search.disconnect.me/ everytime I try to connect to google? I'm trying to break the habit of using google and this would make it easier.

Also is disconnect.me good? Any better suggestions?

Did sysv init originally have those `[ ok ]` indications and was there ever a `service` command as a shortcut to executing the scripts?

Whoops, I meant
search.disconnect.me www.google.com

in your hosts file. I guess that 1 line should be enough. The other post would be for blocking google completely

Also good entries:
