Do long Ethernet cables affect speed and/or latency?
>>
Not unless you're going over the specification length limit of 100 meters (328 feet)
>>
>>62247798
Copper-based Ethernet cables can only be up to ca 150 meters long, before the signal deteriorates so much that it becomes indistinguishable from noise. This is not long enough to have any effect on latency.

The performance for light through optical fiber cables is already maxed out. The latency across the cable under the Atlantic sea is limited by the speed of light.
>>
In theory, yes. In practice the difference is insignificant. What you should be worried about is packet loss which can occur if the cable has too high resistance.
>>
>>62247803
>>62247830
>>62247836

The cable is 25-30 meters in length. I was worrying about packet loss too.
>>
>>62247882
Interference is going to be a bigger problem than length itself. But of course, the longer the cable, the more of it is exposed to electromagnetic fields from other cabling and home appliances. You can always get cables with shielding, if that's a concern.
>>

See >>62247905

>>
>>62247926
what is the speed of light, you retard
>>
>>62247926
to be fair, as long as it's under 100 meters you'd need lab equipment to even see a difference in latency.

Take a 90 meter patch cable and a 5 meter patch cable and you shouldn't notice any real difference in any normal testing. Latency, speed, etc.
>>
>>62247943
299 792 458 meters per second, when travelling in vacuum.
>>
>>62247798
1000Base-T can be run for 100 meters on Cat5E unshielded twisted pair (aka, garden variety cables).

Any longer than that, you're gonna have to start looking into checking resistance and shielding on your cables.

Or just use fiber optics. Who the hell needs to do a run longer than 100m?
>>
>>62247798
>ethernet cable
that's an UTP cable
>>
>>62247950
The granularity of modern network protocols is nowhere being fine enough to distinguish sub-nanosecond differences in latency, not to mention that other factors such as scheduling and other system properties is going to have way more impact on the latency.
>>
>>62247798
The big black cable have larger latency and maybe worse noice/data ratio.
>>
>>62247972
Right, which is why I ended my post with
>you shouldn't notice any real difference in any normal testing. Latency, speed, etc.
>>
>>62247987
Yes, I was just providing additional info to your post.
>>
>>62247798
longer means more secure hashing algos as time is always a factor. holding off course offsets by disregarding security concerns reduces latency and allows for several courses of action over the same data set and its ''variants'' in obfuscation. speed is a coined term and implies ftl. you want to consider your ntc for that and yes overclocking sets them to ftl there is just 0 security for such a notion as it is only a brief, see short, offset when continuing the model. but really only among the other theories. ftl junctures simply do not fit scientific discrete criterias at the nano level.
>>
>>62247953
Fun fact: Voltage driving propagates faster in copper than light through optical fiber
>>
I'm using a 6 foot ethernet cable to a 1gbps unmanaged switch, another 25 foot ethernet cable to another 1gbps unmnaged switch, a final 60 foot ethernet cable to my router downstairs.

2ms ping to a server ~15-25 miles away.
>>
hash algos change per meter over the wire as an effect of the circuit not the system. evrything is logged and the electricity spares no mite nor meter. welcome to 1893. wheres my morse o tron???
>>
>>62248037
Ugh, no, it propagates at about 60% of the speed of light.
>>
>>62248087
>at about 60% of the speed of light.
In vacuum, yes. Through fiber optics, no. Then there's also conversion latency.
>>
yes copper is better at that but the necessary or switch negates the use of copper to slower and less secure bc abridged and open to ear connections.

CAT7 hasn't been finalized, so the final specification might differ from any cables you buy today, meaning when the specification IS finalized, your cables wont be up to spec.

CAT6a is the current specification you want to use. It's good up to 10gbps under 100 meters.

>>
>>62248259
>Everybody in my town thinks the NSA are tapping the fiber optic cables
I mean, they have the capability, but if they're on american soil they'll be doing it at your ISP data center, and likely just forwarding the traffic to their servers instead of physically tapping a line. They've got FISA courts to order the ISP into doing it. Why go through the effort of actually tapping a fiber line? It's far more likely you'll damage the cable, 100x easier just to force the ISP to give you a direct connection into the network.
>>
>>62248282
I think there are quite other problems, like having a secret hidden machine that is able to handle snooping the the bandwith of a whole country.

LOL no, it isn't. Stop making stuff up, please. First of all, the core has a diameter between 8 to 10 micrometers, while visible light is in the range ~380 to ~800 nanometers.

Secondly, single mode fiber still exhibit modal dispersion resulting from multiple spatial modes, but only narrower.

to the guy talking about the hidden machine that can monitor every little thing you have typed and all that...uhhh... you wouldn't by any chance be talking about the dams would you? That's the point and source for all this information. The company that is running the dams also will happen to be the company that is running information propogation. That's why most recently several dams were being destroyed in lieu of either giving up the information peddling or of it all being a valid concern to the families in power.

We are actually in the middle of a valid regime change, the news just won't see it that way or won't speculate over it for the sake of keeping us watching agape.

Brits and Indians want to not highlight or read this post if you are using retina screens. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

To the guy that said NSA and foods truck, because I can't click on post or remember the numbers in order to link, all that you have. to do there then, and it's complicated to even think this is possible at a civilian level, is push the light with another and set your "register" system to only using 3 bits rather than 8. It'll create collisions long enough that you can set up a channel further ahead with only the 3 and no collisions, the light will start normal propogation and eventually allow you to render a data stream similar enough to original to create a proper spoof. I would look into houses with big satellites or guys that have bears but also drive technician vans. They are likely just from another city over, police from there, and are just working a con or scam over the cities youth to get cp. No lie. Tech companies don't allow beards because it interferes with the machinery and could catch fire when dealing more directly with electricity. More recently I got conned into a scam regarding spectrum internet where some douchebag did more than just rig up my internet and set up all sort and manner or propogation machines for my wifi to be relayed over the entire neighborhood. The problem is that it is so closely monitored that I wouldn't be able to use my own internet because they'd block my machine and everyone else can. The wifi is off now and they can't use it but some bitch Mounika A. set up a phreaking system that let's them at least send commands through the 56k, 2g, 3g and 4g even if it just loops over my actions through the network card like in an arch system. The problem with that is that if the guy loses his job for any reason, they're going to come snooping on my connection to make it seem like it was me hacking my own system and setting up a terrorist network so that he can leave the company without costing them money. she tech he isp.

So he's an isp worker meaning he's safe from hard because everything is logged and she's a tech so she will lose her job easy unless I sue her ass, because law suits are totally possible across country lines, the thing is that she still has the only password for the setting configuration and that means that unless she gives it up it's going to come up looking like she and I work together in some sort of terrorist organization. What she doesn't know is that I already have federal surveillance all up and over my ass for things to do with my family and not bad at all, I told them I was a researcher and they wouldn't listen, so now that this is going on I have another lawsuit I can settle over but really, as rich as her family is what am I going to do with ruppees?

Also, I can only imagine what the next tech will do if I try to ask them to change it back to normal and stock. They even more recently added more of this stupid little ushaped entanglers, I like to call them that because they open up the wire for tapping and such ( like those register things ) and still allow normal transmission of data not to do with the internet connection. Like a big flute you can whistle into or talk into that'll act like a microphone.

And really my point in all this is that I can't believe people still think that cops are out to help people. Who the fuck wants to get shot at? If people are saying things like that, it's likely some kid that was already shot up by the police themselves gave up a lot of info or that some girl that will never get back to the police officers themselves gave some blue a bj and made out with enough info on the wire to gain an understanding of where and when it is okay to meet police officers for such favors.

If you call your local PD, they'll ignore it. Instead, record the men in those vans, if you can get from every direction great, but if not just be near a light and get the plate or his face (.facial recognition is pretty top tier rn )

if u can keep the twists in the line it's best but if u use some other type of conductor than cat5 lines if ur worried u might want to put in a 4-port switch after 150 feet or so, some NICs don't like pushing signals on long lines.

it rly depends on the gauge of metal ur using for ur lines and how many pins u want (4 or 8). this is level 101 stuff m8.

Fiber tapping is more easily detected, as it often involves breaking the cable. But yes, it works only when close. It's still considered so risky, that most army and intelligence offices around the world have regulations regarding the use of cable technology though.
