I prefer mpv but vlc is a good alternative.

This has been discussed to death, the simplest thing to state is that it's not designed as a media player, the media player component is there to test stream, the main purpose of vlc is to stream content. The media player is "good enough" to see if it's working, that's it.

They've made improvements over time but the whole thing seems like a waste of effort when other media players already exist and are better both out of the box and with customization, more importantly though the focus of other projects is to be a mediap layer not a media streamer. It's kind of like someone using ffplay as their primary player.

I've been using VLC for the past 6 years out of the box with no problems, and I like the customization even if it gives less options than MPC, which also works out of the box fine

of course it's designed as a media player you dumbass, that's probably like the laziest way to discredit an otherwise good piece of software.
