Depends on whether the features you want actually come in your region and your operator (where that applies, thank god where I live there are basically no operator phones).

I'm considering a G6, but I want a Quad DAC _and_ root, and there's literally no model of G6 out on the market right now combining the two (couldn't care less about wireless charging, even). The H870DS and H870DSU aren't rootable, and H870U just isn't coming out for some reason.

>tfw your ~1 month old new phone's volume keys silver coating is already getting discolored and chipped off
What the hell man, I know this is prone to happen over time but not nearly this quick. I just checked it one day and they were already all chipped off for no reason whatsoever.
Although well, it's actually just the down volume key. I have no idea what caused it, it hasn't gone through any substantial amount of friction at all. My best theory is I have really sweaty hands, and when holding it at least one finger is touching the down volume key. I figured my sweat is very acidic or something. I cannot think of any other reason why it could've happened.

If you expect your phone to survive every day wear and tear you need to get a flagship device.

I was expecting a little more time before it started deteriorating is all, maybe a couple months at least, specially since I try to take care of my electronics as best I can. Should've mentioned the buttons are in fact plastic, yes. Maybe it wasn't clear enough from me saying it has a paint coating.
Funny thing is the silver plastic frame all along the borders is just fine, even right next to the discolored key.

Had the same thing happen to my Moto G3, but only a couple months ago. That's about a year and a half of use. The volume down button, power button and most of the volume up button were bare plastic. Was thinking of somehow dissolving the rest of it, because the plastic didn't look bad and actually felt good where it was completely dissolved. But I've cracked the screen on it, and just left it like that, now it functions as a low power linux server.

Try isopropyl alcohol if you want to dissolve the rest, I can try it on mine if you want to.

There are power supplies which have a "minimum current" you need to draw from them. But those are not your typical USB power supplies. They are are for high power devices, and typically have the minimum load written on them. USB chargers have to be designed to withstand not being connected to a load, because random chargers being fired to death is not good PR for anybody.

Nokia 5 or Moto G5?

They're almost the same spec-wise but the Moto G5 is a 1080p screen while the Nokia is 720p (and it's 0.2 inches bigger so its pixel density is almost half that of the Moto's), so if screen quality is important for you I'd say get the Moto. oneplus 3t is a good choice. I would also recommend galaxy s7
>>
My phone is a lumia 920 (using it since 01/2013). For the last year and a half, I've been keeping an eye out for a new phone, but nothing strikes me as an insta-buy. I'm reaching the point where i might just pull the trigger on a midrange or old flagship.

If I dont buy a current flagship, is there high risk of not getting updates?

Also does loading lineageOS guarantee no preinstalled apps? Haven't done that before. I know apps like facebook are preinstalled on galaxies and you can only disable them (cannot uninstall).

So basically moto g5 plus, galaxy s7, or wait for nokia 8 or xperia xz1 (compact). I live in US so reception might be shit due to missing US bands (AT&T).

Any advice? Should I wait another few months for black friday, holiday price drops? Wait for new phone announcements? Like pixel 2, moto. Part of me says buy the g5plus now because it's like 200 or 225, and then reconsider 6 months later if I want anything better.

Sorry, long ass post. But i havent bought a phone in a long ass time

I've been having this problem lately with my phone. It's a Moto G4 by the by.
Sometimes I go to sleep, leave it on overnight, and when I wake up the entirety of cache managing is completely broken and unresponsive. Trying to delete any cache in settings does nothing for any app, and using something like Clover (which is usually how I find out when it starts happening) ends up with pictures throwing a "Could not load image" error for every single picture, no exception.
I haven't found out a way to correct this other than rebooting completely. This by itself is not much of a problem, but I'd like to know why it even happens to begin with, and it worries me somewhat that it might be the start of something worse.
This morning it happened again, and I decided to reinstall Clover to rule it out as it maybe being the culprit. After the reinstall, which I remember deleting all settings the other times I've done it, my settings were instead still the same, but there were pinned threads from like 5 days ago that I'd gotten rid of at that point.

Any idea of what could possibly be going on? I'm also running stock ROM if that matters.

>>
>>62242605

you mean IP68? the Galaxy S7 is supposed to be resistant up to 1.5 meters for no more than 30 minutes with no special case or stuff. so it should be safe for accidental drops in the toilet or shallow water but I wouldn't trust it if dropped in a pool or you take it in the shower (steam and condensation = bad)

I've been lurking on past two generals, and I'm more confused than I was before. In the past I've only had two smartphones
>HTC Wildfire S
>HTC Desire X (used one)
So they are not the pinnacle of current tech advancement.
I'm not used to anything bigger than 4", and I think 5" is the max I could go for. I was looking through other Desires, because they seemed to be relatively cheap and small, but there are plenty, their numbers are weird 650>728>830 but I guess the front one means like inches, and the next two another iteration, but still it confuses me a lot. Are HTC Desires in 150-180€ range a good choice? Any other recommendations? What I look for is not much:
>5" or fewer
>good battery
>As little unremovable apps as possible

Mind that I'm from Poland, and half of the phones are unavailable, shipping from abroad is not always possible, and even if there is, conversion rates are shit.

Couple quesitons:
>Are there any legit alternatives to Android/Google or OSX? What happened to Firefox?
>Are custom duties still present among EU countries, or does it only affect items shipped from Asia/US to Europe? How they pick what shipping goes through customs, at random?

No custom duties between EU countries. You pay only on packages coming outside of the EU, and only if it's over a certain limit.

It will be a slightly different device on the same chassis and mobo, I would expect. I think they'll get rid of the Quad DAC and change the design of the case. Not sure about cameras, they're likely to retain the f/1.6 one, but whoever knows what will they do with the other ones. In general the focus will likely get shifted from a creator's device to a normal consumer's device feat. Google Assistant everywhere.

SailfishOS might be relevant here, as they announced to work with Sony, the last manufacturer of quality smartphones with small form factors (besides Apple's SE). As he said Android/Google, it should be pointed out as well, that there are free android mods based on AOSP, the most promising being LineageOS, formerly known as CyanogenMod.

I really want Sailfish to become actually usable as a daily driver on a mid-to-flagship level smartphone, but it's just not happening no matter how hard I wish for it. There are community ports, but those don't support Android apps and that basically kills any possibility to use Sailfish on its own without multi-ROM.

Also, I think they dun goofed a bit with the gesture system, it's only understandable by the smartphone generation, I'd never be able to explain my parents why the hell do they have to drag the screen down, and very accurately at that.

As another 'also', fuck Qt's licensing, effectively forcing GPL. I mean there are some workarounds for Sailfish apps, I think, but making sense of the legal crap is not what a developer must spend most of his time on.
>>
>>62247596
Eh, it's mostly cause the phone came out a month ago. I'm hoping it gets Lineage soon though

>>62247584
What's more annoying is that for flagships I actually want there's no point in custom ROMs because the drivers for the nifty features (Quad DAC, stylus, hell - even the second e-ink display if we're talking lesser brands) are all proprietary and only available for the original firmware.
>>
>>62247469

because sometimes they're actually useful. And flagships have the best hardware and build quality. And samsung has bar none, the best OLED panels you can get in a phone.
>>
>>62247614
you're forgetting the most important one, on most phones the camera quality goes worse on custom ROMs because the image processing stuff is proprietary
>>
>>62247613
hwat phone
>>
>>62247714
To be fair, image processing at this point is one of the only things that can make a manufacturers camera beat out others.

Samsung for example uses generally the same or similar sensor to sony phones, and generally similar aperture. Yet samsung is by far the better smartphone camera because the image processing software samsung uses is simply far better than what sony uses.

If samsung just gave out their image processing software for anyone to use they'd lose one of their biggest advantages over their competitors. So obviously they're going to keep it under lock and key.

Which is the better option for a britbong?

Moto G5S Plus 32GB @ £250
or
Redmi Note 4X 64GB @ £185

Leaning towards the G5S Plus because stock Android appeals to me and I'm a bit cautious about chinkshit so let me know how the build quality of the Redmi is. Also, it should work in the UK, right?

Thanks lads. I don't know much about smartphones but desperately need something to replace my HTC One M8. If you think I'd be better off with a different phone besides those two let me know.

Whats the most private smartphone out of the box?
>>
>>62252750
Nokia 3310, anything modern doesn't care about your privacy anon.
>>
>>62252793
I specified SMART phone because I'm looking for a smartphone also before anyone says
>no smartphone is private
I know that that's why I'm asking for the most private for example a blackphone 2 is more private than a google phone
>>
>>62252813
There is no "most private phone out of the box" phone. All phones have a mike and a camera that can potentially spy on you, all phones have internet connection, all phones come with software that collects some of your data. Just buy whatever phone you like and then do the necessary things to make it "private"
>>
>>62252188
Just pre-ordered the G5S Plus on Amazon, have I made the right decision, friends?
>>
>>62252856
jesus fuck there are phones more private out of the box than others so I'm asking which is best out of the box if my main concern is privacy you sperg I gave a fucking example, I'm not trying to have privacy against the fucking NSA I'm trying to have privacy against hackers fucking hell man seriously calm down
>>
>>62250190
On a phone it's sensor and software processing mostly.
1.7 or whatever is the lens aperture, the wider it is the more light gets in.
>>
>>62252586
i'd like to know too, it looks like a good phone.

someone recently posted a camera comparison between the p10 and mi5 note too incase you didnt see it but the mi5 note looks pretty good too.

The app is free. There also exists a paid version, but only available for enterprises. The only practical difference is the 150 notifications/day limit per login.

Oh, I assumed the lite version is much more limited then that. Thanks, I'll check it out

My very professional conversation with the dev
>>
>>62237600
Hi spg.
Im in need of a new phone with the following requirements
5" screen
removable battery
removable storage
decent camera (ie, my pictures look good enough to show friends but i dont give a shit about 100s of filters or slow mo video gimmicks)
fast enough to browse the web without being annoying and play yt videos etc
must have a headphone jack
would be absolutely delighted if it had stylus built in.
Cost £350 max

I would be willing to go second hand only if there was removable battery and replacements are readily available.
Im willing to accept non removable battery on a new phone but only if its got great capacity.

The only games i play are stuff like sudoku and crosswords on the train, so it dosnt need to be great at 3d.

Will consider any OS
Will not buy hauwei.

can you offer any suggestions?

How about the Motorola Moto G5:

http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g5-8454.php

>removable battery
>approx. 200 EUR according to GSMArena
>current year model

POON
>>
Give me a reason to not buy Galaxy S8
>>
>>62254342

No custom ROM support at this time.
2 year update cycle from Samsung.
Non-removable battery.
>>
>>62254355
Rumors are Google is working with several flagships for treble support. If a phone has treble support it can work with ASOP ROMs.
So if the S8 is one of those then it'll have ROMs in a few months after the android 8.0 update
>>
>>62254342
Price
I can have a similarly functioning phone and a laptop for the same price
>>
>>62254411
It's the S8 not the note8.

S8 can be had for like $600

does this exist yet in the android world?

- <5 inch (4.7 preferred)
- OLED
- Not a mini version with shit specs
- Good battery life
- USA bands supported
>>
>>62253865
As a guy who loves his Moto G5 I'll always recommend it, and it fits all of your requirements. Mine was 190 europesos which is what, like 160 or 170 Albion coins? There's the G5 plus and the S versions but afaik those don't have removable battery and SD card
>>
>>62254342
enjoy your broken screen
>>
>>62238127
I have an Honor 5x for a back up device and it's pretty nice. It outlasted my Nexus 6p. The 6x looks nice but I'm not sure if there is any upgrade in performance over the 5x and I've seen where the screen on the 6x scratches pretty easy
>>
>>62254531
Why not get a case?
>>
>>62239311
>>62239341
I've had my G4 play for almost two months and it's like new. No scratches or damages.

Why didn't you buy a case for it? Like TPU or something?
>>
>>62254446
Maybe the Sony something-something Compact will be almost that, but I don't think it is OLED and I don't like Sony.
>>
>>62254838

I took a stroll today and looked at what retailers in my region have to offer.
I found and spent a couple of minutes with HTC Desire 630 and I like it. It has an OK screen, two sim slots an SD slot and appears at least to be reasonably sturdy. I also like the location and texture of the physical button. It is also well withing my spending range and relatively new (for me, it said it runs android 6 and I haven't used android in ages)
Is any good? Please help

Why did the Moto g5s plus release in pajeet land first? There's been no announcements about it coming to the West.
>>
>>62255130
It's already in Huezil.

Absolutely this. I like my phone's design so I'm not going to cover it with a chunk of plastic, and thankfully I'm not a clumsy retard so my phone is safe.
>>
>>62254935

The Pixel at exactly 5" is the closest you'll get to those specs, unless you give up on the OLED requirement

They'll announce it and probably have it up for sale a few days after AFAIK. I've already seen pre-orders up on various Chinese seller sites like AliExpress and GearBest.
