I have my friends website running on a VPS via Linode.
other than running sudo apt-get upgrade every month or so what should i be doing on a regular basis?
I've checked the fail2ban logs and haven't seen any banned IPs which is weird, aren't I supposed to see a bunch of chinks and pajeets trying to hack into my server?
I'm really new to this so help me out here.

it'd be best if you'd post the IP so we could check

this.
other people can often spot things that you've missed.

How does me giving out the IP allow you to see anything? And if so thy sounds like a security risk.

If you have correctly setup IP tables and fail2ban you are pretty set. I would setup two factor auth on your ssh though if you are concerned. Are you taking backups using linode service or are you self rolled?

when will they learn?

I think I'm self rolled. I just followed the documentation to set up the site on Ubuntu Server using Apache (haven't used mysql yet because it's a flat site, but if I have it there if I want to host a wordpress site or something)
setup iptables using UFW as per the documentation, as for backups. I have the entire site backed up on my computer at all times, I make all the changes to it offline first then upload it through FTP, but I don't do any other backing up.

Sounds like a fine place to be for a hobby site. Right now I admin a couple dozen websites for small businesses and host them on Linode. I have a backup-cron that breaks them up into tiny files and backs them up on some free cloud hosting once a day. My partner and I use google 2 factor which was free and easy to setup.
Is your website static or do you update it a lot?
Install yum-cron (I seriously hope you are running centOS) and set to security and update daily.

Install and run Nessus. It'll find any weaknesses.

Ubuntu Server. What does centOS have that is so good for servers?
>>62221250
sounds cool. I should learn how to do that anyway. I possibly lost my last wordpress site because I downloaded the wrong file before cancelling my hosting services

CentOS immediately patched by redhat and updates will not introduce breaking changes. It's stable and safe to update always.

why dont u use unattended-upgrades?
