From what I read on their website, it sounds like it's just a set of install scripts that set up arch for you. If you understand Linux well enough to troubleshoot your own problems you'll be fine, but the arch philosophy is to install it the manual way so you can fix your own problems. Arch is not a system where everything is likely to "just werk" out of the box. That being said, you will get a very similar system.
Their userbase is fairly elitist and will likely just link you to a wiki page instead of giving you personalized support with any issues that they consider to be a stupid question. As long as you're willing to research your own problems and try to solve them yourself, you'll be fine.
>>
>>62216948
>"just werk" out of the box
But it does.
> just link you to a wiki page
The wiki pages are very in depth and account for far more issues then most people think of at random. If you come back with detailed information on your issue and have followed or consulted the wiki, its alot easier to give specific information since you've atleast attempted to follow the wiki and we know you're on at minimal the right path

I thought messing with my graphics drivers might work, but I have now made the problem worse. I was dual booting with windows before but I cant seem to boot to it now (though the partition seems to be there with the data intact) and solus will now do the thing i was describing before with booting at all and not just resuming from suspend.

>I was dual booting with windows before but I cant seem to boot to it now (though the partition seems to be there with the data intact)

1. install os-prober
2. run
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

3. reboot, windows should be in the grub menu.

/dev/sda1 1G EFI System
/dev/sda2 8G Linux swap

mkfs.ext4 on sda1 and sda3, and mkswap on /dev/sda2

So there is really no reason for a regular user to use LTS release of Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Kubuntu instead of the latest one, right? Im gonna install 17.04 then, thank you anons! You guys are the best!
>>
>>62219432
Using the newest version is the best option for most people. Having an old but still supported LTS version can bring a lot of problems. You're gonna have outdated repos and libraries so at some point you're gonna come across a program from Github that won't work properly. LTS is only good for people who don't regularly change up stuff or install new software. It's something you would install on your Grandpa's PC.

Hi everyone,

I've fallen in love with i3wm. I've installed it on my Linux Mint installation. The workflow is basically perfect for me.

But I was wondering what I would run on top of it to make it somewhat more comfy. I don't really know how to do things like manage my network connections or control my systems volume from the terminal and I'd like to do that like in a regular DE. Any suggestions for that?
>>
>>62219562
>i want to use a tiling wm but i want to do all the things that a floating wm gives me
No.
>>
Have a headless Ubuntu server running at home and I have a spare ssd. What do? It's mainly a file/Plex/torrent/backup server. File caching is sort of pointless since I saturate my network anyway.
>>

This has absolutely nothing to do with tiling vs. floating windows really

I just want a panel with a volume mixer, a network manager etc ...
>>
>>62219562
>>62219781
Just install xfce things, they work very good with i3. As for internet, install nm-applet (but you probably have it already, so just add it to your i3 config)

Will Ubuntu survive when Canonical inevitably collapses from debt? They are heavily in debt currently and haven't made any money at all in all of their years of operating.

I find this worrisome for the longevity of Ubuntu, and all Ubuntu derivatives like Trisquel. How can a person comfortably use an OS that could stop receiving support at any time?

The first thing you have to do is get used to the command line. There are tons of videos on youtube.

Your second step might be learning to use git because you most likely won't find a lot of themes in the official repos. They're more likely on Github.

you don't need any xfce things
install NetworkManager and nm-applet
use i3blocks instead of i3status (i3status is garbage)
make keybinds for volume control
these are mine
bindsym $mod+Right exec "amixer set Master 1%+"
bindsym $mod+Up exec "amixer set Master 5%+"
bindsym $mod+Left exec "amixer set Master 1%-"
bindsym $mod+Down exec "amixer set Master 5%-"
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+m exec "amixer set Master toggle"

if you have media keys on your keyboard, you can use these
bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec "amixer set Master 2%+"
bindsym XF86AudioLowerVolume exec "amixer set Master 2%-"
bindsym XF86AudioMute exec "amixer set Master toggle"

make sure you have alsa-utils (package that provides amixer and alsamixer)
if you want to use a GUI file manager, you might wanna read these

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Getting_File_Managers_to_work_properly_in_Window_Managers
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/File_manager_functionality
you're also gonna need polkit and a graphical authentication agent if you wanna do stuff that requires higher privileges outside the terminal (like mounting other partitions via file manager and using gparted)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Polkit
also, add keybinds for power management if you haven't already, these are mine
bindsym $mod+Shift+Escape exec "systemctl poweroff"
bindsym $mod+Shift+Delete exec "systemctl reboot"

How much space do you recommend I allocate for the Gentoo root partition?
On my soon to be replaced Arch system, I'm have a 25G root partition, out of which 12G is used after cleaning the pacman cache completely.
I suppose I'll need more space for the cache, since the source takes more space than the compiled programs, right?
Should I just go with 25G or use 30G or more?

Why isn't linux hardened kernel default? What are the extra features that are keeping it this way or is it too slow?
>>
>>62224927
Because it takes user interaction to use any form(apparmor, gre, selinux)
Security is relevent to the users needs.
Linux is made for you to do as you please for your workflow.
>>
>>62224991
so the answer is a smaller kernel?
>>
>>62225046
Not really.
>>
>>62225061
you would need to install other things that would require the extra management. The MAC things would be endlessly frustrating, but a kernel change isn't going to implement that. Same with apparmor. I am really not sure what you are getting at then.
>>
>>62225117
You have to install selinux and set it up your self
You have to install apparmour and set it up your self
You have to install gre and set it up your self

There are various ways for it to be done, some ditros enable them by default but dont do any settings, because its a hassle to the user for every day use if you have to have all these settings and profiles made before you can use it.
>>
>>62225200
Yes, you do need to install these things for these things to work.

The question is about the kernel. Far as I can tell it is a few extra flags and some extra modules.

I just installed mint today. It's so comfy. But I broke it already. I tried to install python 3.6 and I have no start menu, can't launch terminal, and black background. How do I revert to python 3.5? I'm so bad at this but I'm trying
>>
>>62226080
Upgrading Python3 by itself shouldn't make problems. How did you install Python 3.6?

Also, what's the output of:
ls - l $(which python)

and
ls - l $(which python3)

If you installed it via a PPA, just remove the PPA and run apt-get install --reinstall <the package>

(Why the fuck gives ls with the -l flag connection errors? Mooooot!)
>>
>>62226125
I dun goofed. I can't even access the terminal to check the output. This is the guide I followed.

https://mintguide.org/other/794-python-3-6-install-latest-version-into-linux-mint.html

I'm not meant to use this is yet.
>>
>>62226170
Dun goofed is right. What possessed you to follow some random guide like this in the first place?
>>
>>62226170
Checked your guide. If you have followed it exactly and didn't change anything Python2 related, all you need to do to revert is to switch to a different Python3 alternative by running sudo update-alternatives --config python3.

That said, idk why upgrading Python3 could cause any problems. Then again, it's Mint.

If you can't access a terminal, you can always access a tty (console) with the key combo CTRL+ALT+(F1,F2,F3,etc).

I have a weird issue with KDE.

The leftmost 1-pixel-border of the screen doesn't respond to clicks. If I have a window focused over full-screened Chrome for example, if I move the mouse all the way to the left and click anywhere on that border it won't refocus Chrome - but move it 1 pixel to the right and that does the trick.

Any easy way to turn this off?

I literally can't figure out if this is a feature or even something that can be changed.

I don't remmeber. You will get extra boot etnries to select the new kernel when you turn on the pc. I think it doesn't even set itself as default - it will pop up in the advanced boot options or something.

It won't remove the old kernel. If you keep just doing this you could end up with 5+ different kernel versions in your grub menu. Just remember to dleete those when you dont need them.

Also kernel 4.13 should be coming out today or very soon so maybe wait for that instead of installing 4.12.10 today

The status of the ARM port of the distro (and if the distro fully supports that ARM chip. I'm talking about accelerated video, FPU, NEON, other hardware capabilities etc).

Are there any issues with Xubuntu 17.04 on an X220? I want to install ubuntu with xfce but I've heard installing Xubuntu has issues, am I better off installing Ubuntu minimal and then xfce?
>>
>>62236696
What issues? Xubuntu 17.04 is running fine on my X230. Can't speak for the X220 though.

So I installed Ubuntu to a USB HDD, and while it boots, Ubuntu says that the USB HDD that it's installed to is read only.

How do I fix this?
>>
>>62236788
I'm not actually sure, I just remember reading on /g/ that Xubuntu had some issues and it was better to do a minimal install + xfce. But if there are no known issues at the moment I'll just install Xubuntu

You have multiple services bringing up the device
The interface of network profile 'wlp18s0-NO_ob' is already up

do
ip link set wlp18s0-NO_ob down

Then restart netctl
