Australian here, I get 6mbps download on home net with frequent drop outs and packet loss... Meanwhile 4G I get 43mbps where I live.

Since data caps are so low here 1-5gb and costs $10 per extra gb hence the speeds. I have a 100gb plan which is enough though and works great.

Nope, google servers are actually the weak link in the speedtest there, google servers always get hammered though so I never really expect anything beyond 500-600mbps.

Speaking of slow webbernets, I've still got 8 more months to go before that NBN nonsense shows up at my house and I'm desperate to squeeze every KB I can out of my connection. Generally goes at ~ 360 KB/s with 53 dB attenuation. Is there any legitimacy in thinking upgrading my modem to a FITZ!Box 7490 may improve the connection slightly? I've read multiple accounts of speed increases with that thing. Or if not that, what's the best functioning modem for a very long, probably low quality line? I know I'm not going to get a huge increase but anything helps. I don't care about extra functionality.

If this is upstream power I would look at replacing or re-configuring your coax splitters and make sure you've not got any old shit or extraneous splits.

Besides that a better modem COULD potentially increase your throughput, but it wouldnt be a guaranteed, too much is dependent on line quality before it reaches you.

Specifically pic related. Downstream is the 53 dB. My phone is really crackly, huge interference even connecting it directly to where the line arrives at the house (single central splitter is connected immediately upon entry), but the ADSL2+ is completely reliable at this SNR and I can even halve it and still have it maintain for dozens of hours for a slight bandwidth gain, so I'm left completely puzzled as to how bad the line quality actually is. It's definitely a long-ass way though, the cable could be around 4 KM. My hope is a more modern modem with a better chipset like the 7490 might be able to squeeze more blood out of this rock, but it's not a trivial investment just to try it and there's nothing I can find in the way of concrete evidence of what to expect.

Getting FTTC here, I'm guaranteed the 100 Mbps with future potential to go above 500 Mbps. But that's nearly a year off. The 7490 would still work with the VDSL though, so it wouldn't be entirely wasted.

30 Mbps on FTTC absolutely has to be signficantly faulty wiring somewhere between the modem and the curb. If that's the case, it can be replaced. DSL has the problem of the wire *somewhere* between the house and the exchange being the problem, and if it's not your own wiring you're fucked.

It's created a problem that's going to have to be 'solved' by ripping fucking everything up again in the future and replacing it with what should have been there in the first place, it's retarded.
