I don't use reddit but at this point I just don't understand why everyone gets up in arms about it besides hating reddit being an old meme. It looks like they occupy totally different niches. Reddit is like /vg/ but for things besides video games, and does persistent user-created discussion boards much better than 4chan does through /vg/ numbered threads with no user moderation. 4chan is much better at discovering new things because there's basically no topic filters or user moderation at all, it's like a shotgun blast of combined shitposting and content.

Or would you rather get it from a bunch of parrots desperately repeating whatever they think the sub wants to hear because upvotes are all that really matter to them?
>>
>>62209115
yeah 4chan is much better for discussion, with 70% shitposting, 20% stale memes, 8% absolute retards asking how to install Windows 7 or if Chrome is good and 2% quality content. Also threads on faster boards die in like 20 minutes.
>>
>>62209227
reddit is still considered a "tech" site. wouldn't be surprised if there existed an overlap in users
>>
>>62206175
Usenet will rise again.
>>
>>62209281
The problem is you, and people like you, don't want quality discussion here. You have literally no incentive to want it. You don't have a name, an avatar, a post count, and - most importantly - you don't have any "karma" to farm. So what possible reason could you have for any sort of reasonable discussion? Yep, none at all. Rather, you prefer to engage in what you think is "futaba board culture" and shitpost any discussion that might happen into the dirt. Because, you know, danke meemays xD or something.
>>
>>62209281
4chan is a million times better for discussion than shit sites like plebbit. I can argue with tons of autists all day without worrying about getting banned for hurting some mods feelings. You don't get any quality discussion from here because you don't put any effort to get it.
>>
who cares. 4chan has and still is nonfree to this day.
the only reason i don't use reddit is because of incompetent shit like this.

it's literally unusable
>>
So it will be 4Chan? The public will have an old and incomplete copy of the source code.
>>
>>62206184
>for no reason
Hello, plebbit.
>>
>>62209304
yeah sure. Not the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of people here so discussion is impossible. I've tried making "quality" threads on other boards and no one gives a shit. No one wants to discuss anything, just post the same memes over and over again
>>
>>62209372
There are not hundreds of thousands of people on /g/. You're free to go back now.
>>
>>62209372
>it's okay for me to do it because everyone else does it to me
>it's not because my threads are shit and i should probably just lurk moar
>i've been here all summer
If you actually have something interesting or insightful to discuss, it'll get discussed regardless of the meme kiddos. They usually get bored and wander off when a discussion is engaging enough to thwart their efforts at derailing it. Of course, if your topic is shit, you're not going to be attracting anything BUT the kiddos. So, you just go ahead and enjoy that hot mess. Just realize you're the reason for it.
>>
>>62209372
Leave at your leisure, sweetie.
>>
>>62206175
it didn't kill anything, people chose to use it instead of smaller forums out of convenience, and out of trust that it won't go away or get changed on a whim, and because of name recognition
I mean NeoGAF is still chugging along despite having an arbitrary arcane frequently broken means of even signing up
>>
>>62207920
why? I see this attitude about Internet stuff, Reddit, 4chan, memes, lots of things, but no one ever says why
>>
>>62209621
99% of the time it's just cringeworthy and people are usually way out of date and cite old memes.
>>
>>62209157
different guy here, I think it's more the downvotes that are the problem
people don't know or don't care that they're supposed to be about relevance and objective quality, which is kind of understandable given that upvotes are understood to be for things you like even when used properly, but it's still fucking dumb that "bad" posts get downvoted into the fucking shadow realm when they're well thought out, well spoken, and calm, but don't agree with popular opinion
also I think there's more policing of artificial and mass upvotes than downvotes
I mean "the downvote brigade" used to be one of the watchwords for criticizing a board or the site as a whole and it's like people just forgot, or maybe they're also newfags
>>
>>62206355
There's good reasons to hate reddit that have nothing to do with rivalry.
>>
>>62209372
Mods could be more active in moving the garbage and off-topic posts to >>>/trash/ and other boards, respectively, and/or ban the anons who post them but then people would complain about censorship.

>>
>>62207197
you were looking for the =:= operator, the = operator is for assignment. It's surprisingly rich, and can do some pretty in-depth stuff with the built in data structures
>>
>>62206843
That's why you go to small subs. Everything over 50k subs that isn't heavily moderated tends to be crap.
>>
>>62209654
so? they'll do it about other stuff instead, they'll talk about how this book from Dan Brown or that movie from Marvel or that song from Taylor Swift or that phone from Apple (to use popular examples) is just the best thing ever and OMG haven't you heard, are you rolling your eyes at me?
this is a thing people do, saying they should just not discuss X because they'll be cringey about X is missing the point and cutting out any chance of good discussion
and if you don't like it you should fucking confront people on it, you can talk to your brother, you can yell at him, you can beat him the fuck up, you're lucky in that regard
>>
>>62209776
Plus, since there's less users to upvote posts there's less incentive to post things for karma.
This is what makes the discussions in smaller subs more genuine and less circlejerky.

Reddit is a shithole! The voting system on posts fucking sucks! Everyone is retarded. Reddit is social engineering platform
Young kids come to Reddit at the young age because it's the ""frontpage of the internet"" and all their favorite e-celebrities have a page there, and then get indoctrinated into being left wing radicals because those are the people who've got monopoly on karma and support of the site owners
Those who don't, get censored and/or leave, effectively keeping the bubble intact for the most part

>>62206184
I didn't understand it at first, I thought it was just a petty rivalry, but then I realised it's about ideology.
See, Reddit is feminist and I'm being serious. Nobody on either side thinks about it, but it's mostly the thinking that's different. On Reddit you're supposed to stay within group's world view, not challenge it, which is reinforced by karma system (downvoting into oblivion what groupthink doesn't like), mods removing wrongthink posts, irrelevant if they fit the topic or not and, finally, the users bullying nonconformists on emotional basis (waaahhrguments and shaming). The other thing is promotion of tolerance and compromises, which means that confrontations are discouraged and you can't exactly have a good discussion if you aren't allowed to challenge (not tolerate) others views. That said, it's not that site itself is unsalvageable, it's that normalfags get attracted by safe space premise and it's them who can't bear even the slightest critique.
On 4chan mods don't give as much shit, post quality is at best suggested by (You)s and users themselves are obnoxious, autistic and non-inclusive (as in, lurk moar). We don't give any fucks about banters unless they're good or posts in general unless they're best sort. We're here for bantz, shitstorms, tears and those rare quality posts. And porn.

looked at a couple of my favourite subreddits (philosophy, languagelearning, classicalmusic, meditation, programming). I can see a lot of discussion. I can't see any "MAH TRUMP". why would you lie?

Now 4chan is finally officially better than Reddit.
I hated Reddit from the bottom of my heart but it was objectively better just because it was open source.
Now with that gone, I can post here without guilt.

Good news. Reddit is less vulnerable to attack now
>>
Lets face it when you get to the top (in Reddit's case one of the most visited sites on the web) you tend to guard your coca-cola secret recipe religiously. Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Google, Amazon etc.
>>
>>62206348
Other way around buddy
>>
>>62206193
Kind of ironic, considering that this bait's cogency is nearly self-aware. 4chan has pretty decent discussions more often than you realize. People here are pretty honest, which can be brutal or constructive, depending on your outlook.

Because you aren't actively moderated to conform to the group think here.
Sure you get a lot of people calling you a retard, or shills, but at least you have the option to call them out and your comment will be as visible as any other.
Whereas in Reddit your magic internet points determine how visible your comment is, your credibility is tied to those internet points which promotes some real stupid behaviour and creates a hug-box like place.
>>
>>62213837
>>62215227
it's also because on reddit you have to hit enter twice to make a separate paragraph
these ledditors get accustomed to that habit and it shows up when they're typing on other sites
that's what makes it so easy to identify them here
>>
>>62213073
Haven't used reddit for porn since LITERALLY HITLER made /r/gonewild account mandatory.

>>62215417
that only happened on reddit a few months ago
what about throughout the rest of 4chan's history when no one complained about it being closed source?
how do we know gookmoot didn't add shady shit to the code?
how do we know everything we type here isn't getting sent to another location?

You're not required to hit enter two times to separate lines of text on 4chan. There's really no point in doing it here
>>
>>62215566
agree, hitting enter 2 times is retarded

3 times is masterrace
>>
>>62215566
>There's really no point in doing it here
I like doing it when separating longer paragraphs, it's easier to read and to see separate points in the same post.
>>
>>62215637
Oh definitely, especially when I'm quoting an article, but it's pretty pointless when you're not typing that much
>>
>>62215543
No even worse, they're the lamest fucking adults on earth. Redditors are the type of men that not even kids respect. In high school, redditors were the guys who unironically heered "Go bulldogs!" At pep rallies.
>>
I think it might be phoneposters because text folds a lot more on a phone, so they add empty line. It's rubbish on the PC though. Fucking phoneposters.

>>
>>62215796
Realistically the biggest problem facing reddit is that the default logged out state presents the site as very narrow, creating this perception that reddit is just all about talking about trump or clinton or random gifs. It's only after you've used it for some time can you then realize that there is a sub for basically everything.
>>
>>62215796
this
granted, reddit is a leftist circlejerk, but the only reason they come to 4chan is because their fee-fees were hurt on that site
that's why they always whine constantly about reddit's censorship
>>
>>62215836
No it's perfectly fine the way it is. You need to have a trap for the casual posters so actual discussions won't get polluted with their shittery.
>>
Reddit strikes me more as a news aggregator than anything else. The OPs are usually structured as LOOK AT THING or I READ THING with people doing banal comments about THING. Very few of the threads are a discussion started with a question. I found a couple, but that's not saying much. When you have to search for a board, as in it's hidden from simple lazy clicking, that seems to result in a marked improvement in quality, but seeing as I have to search to even find a technology board, when it's easily accessed on 4chan and pretty much any other forum, and the content isn't that far removed from those sites, it makes me wonder how competent the site is in general...
>>
>>62215795
no one takes 4chan serious though. This is a shithole for shitposting. Normies think that reddit is real life though

>>
>>62216028
I don't think you understand, this is the only life lots of people have, that makes it very serious for them
>>
>>62209776
wait, the boards equivalent are called subs or what. I have tried to join that thing a couple of times (actually just asked a few questions in different subs or whatever and barely got an actual answer).

It looks like if you don't suck any famous guy's dick like youtubers and such or care about that upvote thing you won't like that much it.
>>
>>62206193
The most productive tech discussion I've seen is on 4chan
>>
>>62215992
I think you're missing his point. We use 4chan for anonymity yet no one knows exactly what's in 4chan's source code, save for a few developers who tell us that there's nothing sinister in it.
You're telling me that's okay and we should believe them without questioning?
And try to look at it objectively instead of deflecting to "muh reddit" and "muh spez".
>>
>>62215492
gookmoot could just not include the shady code in the repo, but include it on the live site. Sorta like 8 chan and how nobody knew about sunshine until they got hacked, even though it was open source the entire time.

But I'm not saying it is a good thing, I'm just saying that I'd much rather have Reddit's source code be open rather than 4chan's, because the person in charge of Reddit has been caught using backdoors in the code in order to edit people's posts out of malicious intent.

How much did you get for it?

I didn't even know that was a thing, but it sounds interesting enough. I think I have a five year sitting around somewhere that I'd like to get rid of. I'd feel a bit guilty, but considering that Reddit has done nothing about the rampant shill problem and may be encouraging it to begin with, making the problem worse might force their hand.
