Ill be buying a ThinkPad soon, on my country's version of ebay there are plenty of x220 t420 and popular models like that.

Now my worry is, are these laptops good for web dev/design?

Im gonna use Linux

I need to know if something like (pic related) is at least strong enough to play some smaller games I.E. League of legends?

And finally, is it often that thinkpads are BIOS locked? If so how is a BIOS lock removed?

They're pretty nice for webdev and dev in general. Really, they fly with Linux. I'm a engineering student and coming from a A8 16RAM desktop I felt no difference in daily/professional use.

Can the X220s run Coreboot? I want something small and light for Arch that I can mostly compile small projects on, most of the rest of my work will be SSHed to a remote supercomputer. I see the X220 is great for Coreboot, but I don't need the extra power or weight.

Just whatever they're set to by default. Generally comfy on Linux but I was getting hand cramps on Windows 7. I think the 768p screen scaling might be helping.

Friend just moved out to college and left behind a T500. It doesn't have a charger. Would it be worth it to purchase a charger? Iv'e never used a ThinkPad but this thing has so much variety I sort of want to see what it can do.

What are /tpg/'s opinions on modern thinkpad? ie ones currently sold on Lenovo website? Thinking about picking up an x270, or t470s. X270 has the comfiest size and amazing battery life, but t470s is overall a more powerful machine, and has more ram potential. >Inb4 just get a t420

Bought this for $115, Just added a SSD for $50 and 4gb ram for $25. Also added a new battery for $35. So far this T420 has been a pleasure to use. Loving this keyboard. Also did I receive the model with a NVS 4200M? The description stated it only game with a 3000HD integrated. Any input from the /g/uys would help.

Contemplating picking up a T430. I have a T420 now with an SSD and USB3 card, but I think the upgraded screen, newer processor (3rd gen vs 2nd) and nvidia 5400 might be a nice boost.

I just had a thinkpad x200 tablet stolen from me a week or two ago out of my Rendezvous. Only owned it for about 2 weeks. Was the perfect computer for running my on-site services... really tough to say. Probably the best thing to do is do a full panel swap. I know my X1C3 4K display used a completely different ribbon cable and size compared to the X1C2, which had 4K capability.

Been considering a Thinkpad for a while, but recently found out that I can get Dell stuff through work at a substantial discount, so I'm thinking of getting a Latitude, Precision, or something with a clit mouse that doesn't look like it was won with tickets at fucking Golf n' Stuff (like the Inspirons). Is there a current T4XX equivalent that /g/ recommends? All the comparisons I've managed to turn up are for models that aren't listed on Dell's website anymore, so any advice regarding what's currently available is double appreciated.

Anyone ever bought a bluetooth daughterboard? I want one for my X220T. I have one good and working X220T, and one that's missing a few parts. My good one didn't have a fingerprint reader or bluetooth, but the bad one did. I tried to move over the bluetooth and I remember getting errors in my TTY from it, so I took it out. I don't know if it's a proper working one since I got a for-parts laptop and took it out of there. Where should I order a new one from? Bonus points if it supports newer bluetooth than the stock one as well.

as far as priority, I'd start with the dock, then go with the ssd. the IPS panel isn't gonna be higher res, so I guess decide how much you care about paying just for better colors and viewing angles. maybe look and see if there are any mods to get screens from other laptops in the x230 like how you can put an alienware screen in the t420

Yes. There is absolutely no difference between a DDR3L for a MacBook or for a "normal" computer. If it's the same technology, it will work.

Hello!
Yesterday, I bought an IBM thinkpad 240x. Its one of those super light and portable models. I got it for pretty cheap because it was missing some parts, but I fixed it right up and now it boots beautifully. The next step would be installing an operating system. My problem is pic related. In the bios boot menu, it says that it only supports booting from HDD or a floppy disk, at least that's how I understand it. I have an external floppy reader for this machine, but the floppies are all so small that I can't fit any Linux .iso files onto them.
What should I do now? I really want to get this beauty running. Would it be possible to flash libreboot onto this? Or some other bios replacement that would let me boot from an USB stick, or maybe a PCMIA card?

I don't think there's any BIOS replacement available for a computer that old. It's Pentium III, right? You're not gonna be able to run a modern OS on it. Try to install Windows 98 or maybe 2000.

Hello /g/entlemen, I've been looking for a thinkpad since I started my studies. I would mainly use it for word, powerpoint, maybe occasional photoshop and premiere work. I have these two options that fit my budget nicely, can you help me make up my mind?

1st: T420s, i5-2620, 8gb ram, 160gb ssd, 1600x900 screen. 285euros.

2nd: X230, i5-3220M, 8gb ram, 250gb ssd, i believe its that 1366x7something res screen. 250euros.

I don't know if the bios is locked on either of these, but I know they're both available. If both of these sound bad, I could wait a few days and look more, but I've been lurking the Lithuanian version of craigslist for over a month now. Btw, is it worth to get an X250 or something newer, or is the 2nd and 3rd gen i5 alright for video, photo editing and document work? Thanks a lot guys.

OK here's one.
Anon was pretty much correct. Out of those two the X230 is the only valid option, and the price is pretty good, but if you were considering a 14" model with a higher res you might not be satisfied with 12" 768p.

If you want it a bit bigger try to find a regular T420 or a T430. If you're fine with 12", the X230 is the best option.

Are the thinkcentre towers worth getting into? I'm kinda tired of overheating laptops.

I did this too. I also fixed the touchpad in place with hot glue so it doesn't click anymore because the click felt dirt cheap and it even happened when I hit it with my palm when using the trackpoint.

Guys I want to replace my fagbook pro and I'm looking at the T570.

The only thing I dislike is the numbad.

I do like the Nvidia GPU because I occassionally dual-boot to do some vidya when I am out and about.

Is the T570 /g/-approved?

And no I am not a poorfag so money is the really an issue. Specially considering the fagbook costs way more.

You could install dos and copy windows cd files inside the HDD using another computer, then boot into dos and start the installation. You can map the real drive into virtual box and install dos there.

I remember using a program called plop on a floppy disk to boot a Linux iso on a computer that didn't support booting from CDs before, but getting an external cd drive that works on it might be harder.

Depends on what you want the linux for. If you want to fart around on linux, put in on a live usb, then you can play. But that means you get slower speeds, not as much storage and lose one of your usb ports. If you can live with that then use usb.

The cons to installing it on your system will be booting time. You will have to go through grub and select which OS you want to boot into. And it's on a timer so if you turn on your laptop, walk away and don't choose the OS you want then you'll have to reboot and select it. That's the only real annoying con I can think of to actually installing it.

Is the T420/430 the only ones that can have their screens replaced with a 1920x1080 screen or can you do that with the X220/X230

Tell for the thinkpad meme and got a T430s i7350M 8gb for $220. Waiting to get it and see if the battery life is at least average 4-5 hours. The lighter weight was a draw for me.

My W500 came yesterday, was listed as "Parts or not working" because it was BIOS locked. I installed Libreboot, and a T9600 and she's one bad machine! Loving that resolution compared to my X200, and the thing looks like it just came out of the box! Whatever it was used for before, it was very light.

Sorry for >windows but I have an X220 running Win7 and for about a week now the screen will randomly go black for few seconds before coming back on and it's at the lock screen.

Want to build a high-end PC at home with 1080ti or possibly a vega, r7 1700x and other such parts. I want to use this computer remotely from my laptop for developing (Visual Studio, several docker images, a *sql server and at least one backend server should be able to run simultanously through remote with little lag if done right) and at home for gayming.

I need a portable cheap thinkpad for work/school. It should work with a external 1080 monitor (work) and have good battery life elsewhere (school and others). I'm currently looking at a X230 with a i5-3230M, 4gb of ram (have 2 4gb sticks from current shit laptop), no ssd (have a used 128gb ssd from current shit laptop) for $200. Good or nah? Non-US.

Also, current laptop is a $400 fujitsu that has some shitty i3, a battery that lasts 1hr max currently, 15" and clunky and heavy as hell, all in all consumer tier garbage.
