/g/ i really need your help now.

Ill be buying a ThinkPad soon, on my country's version of ebay there are plenty of x220 t420 and popular models like that.

Now my worry is, are these laptops good for web dev/design?

Im gonna use Linux

I need to know if something like (pic related) is at least strong enough to play some smaller games I.E. League of legends?

And finally, is it often that thinkpads are BIOS locked? If so how is a BIOS lock removed?

Be serious pls babes

The listing was removed yesterday, should I just wait for the item to be delivered (could be a month from now, but I don't think they even sent it yet desu) or take it up with ebay now?

I never got a notification it was sent so they might have jewed me, so I think I probably should take it up with ebay.

post your nipple settings. I can't find anything comfortable for me. Either it's taking 20 seconds to go from one corner to the other (fullhd by the way), or it goes all over the place. Also pressing the nipple hard makes my weakling hands cramp.

Just whatever they're set to by default. Generally comfy on Linux but I was getting hand cramps on Windows 7. I think the 768p screen scaling might be helping.

can't upgrade cpu in X series (without soldering anyway)

as far as priority, I'd start with the dock, then go with the ssd. the IPS panel isn't gonna be higher res, so I guess decide how much you care about paying just for better colors and viewing angles. maybe look and see if there are any mods to get screens from other laptops in the x230 like how you can put an alienware screen in the t420

Yes. There is absolutely no difference between a DDR3L for a MacBook or for a "normal" computer. If it's the same technology, it will work.

just the screen, and the thinkpad needs to already have the 1600x900 screen, as otherwise the cable's incorrect.

Hello!
Yesterday, I bought an IBM thinkpad 240x. Its one of those super light and portable models. I got it for pretty cheap because it was missing some parts, but I fixed it right up and now it boots beautifully. The next step would be installing an operating system. My problem is pic related. In the bios boot menu, it says that it only supports booting from HDD or a floppy disk, at least that's how I understand it. I have an external floppy reader for this machine, but the floppies are all so small that I can't fit any Linux .iso files onto them.
What should I do now? I really want to get this beauty running. Would it be possible to flash libreboot onto this? Or some other bios replacement that would let me boot from an USB stick, or maybe a PCMIA card?
Pls halp
>>
I just got a t430 from ebay. I got it pretty cheap however 2 of the keys don't work. I don't really want to return it. What's the best way I can fix it?

I don't think there's any BIOS replacement available for a computer that old. It's Pentium III, right? You're not gonna be able to run a modern OS on it. Try to install Windows 98 or maybe 2000.
>>
Hello /g/entlemen, I've been looking for a thinkpad since I started my studies. I would mainly use it for word, powerpoint, maybe occasional photoshop and premiere work. I have these two options that fit my budget nicely, can you help me make up my mind?

1st: T420s, i5-2620, 8gb ram, 160gb ssd, 1600x900 screen. 285euros.

2nd: X230, i5-3220M, 8gb ram, 250gb ssd, i believe its that 1366x7something res screen. 250euros.

I don't know if the bios is locked on either of these, but I know they're both available. If both of these sound bad, I could wait a few days and look more, but I've been lurking the Lithuanian version of craigslist for over a month now. Btw, is it worth to get an X250 or something newer, or is the 2nd and 3rd gen i5 alright for video, photo editing and document work? Thanks a lot guys.

>T420s
Yeah, don't get that one. Older s models only had small battery options.

>X230
The screen is 1366x768.
Price is OK considering it already comes with 8GB RAM and SSD.
>>
As someone not interested in buying a thinkpad but intrigued by your fascination with them, what is THE BEST thinkpad in history? Is there a universally agreed upon model for a perfect thinkpad?
>>
>>62215480
'Probably the T60 and X60 because they're the last genuine IBM models. That means they got the IBM build quality with the best available performance. Sadly, they're aging though.
>>
>>62215462
Thanks man, would love to hear more opinions from /tpg/ before I buy though.
>>
>>62215591
OK here's one.
Anon was pretty much correct. Out of those two the X230 is the only valid option, and the price is pretty good, but if you were considering a 14" model with a higher res you might not be satisfied with 12" 768p.

If you want it a bit bigger try to find a regular T420 or a T430. If you're fine with 12", the X230 is the best option.

The only thing I dislike is the numbad.

I do like the Nvidia GPU because I occassionally dual-boot to do some vidya when I am out and about.

You could install dos and copy windows cd files inside the HDD using another computer, then boot into dos and start the installation. You can map the real drive into virtual box and install dos there.

I remember using a program called plop on a floppy disk to boot a Linux iso on a computer that didn't support booting from CDs before, but getting an external cd drive that works on it might be harder.

Is there any cons to dual booting my new thinkpad on linux? I'm interested in having both OS's available but I don't want to hinder one or both of the OS's by having both of them installed on one system.

Would it be a better solution to just make a bootable USB and put linux on that?
>>
>>62217026
Who is the carrier? USPS will deliver on Saturdays if you have priority mail.
>>
>>62217386
most thinkpads can use three drives and the X series can use two, just triple boot if you want

hell the t420 and x220 are perfectly macOS compatible machines if you want to run gayOS as well
>>
>>62217386
Depends on what you want the linux for. If you want to fart around on linux, put in on a live usb, then you can play. But that means you get slower speeds, not as much storage and lose one of your usb ports. If you can live with that then use usb.

The cons to installing it on your system will be booting time. You will have to go through grub and select which OS you want to boot into. And it's on a timer so if you turn on your laptop, walk away and don't choose the OS you want then you'll have to reboot and select it. That's the only real annoying con I can think of to actually installing it.

FHD ips (B140HAN01.2)
t450 trackpad

The only thing I am am debating is getting the backlit keyboard but I dont really need it.
>>
>>62219249
I got one last December, 120GB for 40$, gr8 buy
>>
is it worth to use my t420 as a hackintosh ?

got an mid 2010 mbp but would love to have more cpu performance. Penryn is getting to old.
>>
>>62219366
I've heard that the backlit keyboard has less travel distance, so I've avoided it. Considered a second drive? You can put one in the DVD bay if you need it.

Original CPU or replaced?
>>
I can't imagine working all day on a X-series without feeling cramped, is a 12.5" really that comfortable?
>>
>>62219366
Did you have to calibrate your screen? I got the B140HAN01.3 and it was yellow as fug out of the box.
>>
>>62219444
If that is true then I won't.

I like having the optical drive for now. I have though about getting a m.2 just for the OS. The i7 is a swap originally had a i5-4200m

>>62219526
No it was pretty perfect out of the box.
>>
>>62219665
Have you swapped the heatsink or kept the original?

And the M.2 option is nice, but it's 2242 instead of 2280 so you're limited to a very tiny subset of them.

What is this launcher
>>
>>62219758
Stock but i also don't have the dGPU so it hasn't been a problem. When I was compiling my kernel I peaked at 85C at 100% load on all cores.
>>
>>62219942
Mine sits <90 on synthetic, but only at base clock. I'm hoping the heatsink from the dGPU model will let it boost up a bit.

But there's nothing wrong with that, no.

My W500 came yesterday, was listed as "Parts or not working" because it was BIOS locked. I installed Libreboot, and a T9600 and she's one bad machine! Loving that resolution compared to my X200, and the thing looks like it just came out of the box! Whatever it was used for before, it was very light.

I got her for $40, whatcha think?

Sorry for >windows but I have an X220 running Win7 and for about a week now the screen will randomly go black for few seconds before coming back on and it's at the lock screen.

Is this a driver/os issue or is it hardware-related?
>>
What's wrong with my X220, lads

Sometimes while browsing the screen turns off, the "muted" button lights up and the "battery" light turns yellow while the "sleep" light turn on.
I turn down the lid and everything's back to normal.

???!

The E series doesnt have the same durability as T/X, but the recent E470/E570 have good build quality , IPS FHD, good graphics and SSD for a good price for any of you guys looking for that.

should i buy an x240 for programming work, music and taking notes?
How comfy is it?

I've dropped my blazepad several feet onto concrete more than once. Spilled bong water on it. Dropped it down the stairs. Forgot it in a hot car for two days. Had my kids steal it and pry most of the buttons off the keyboard and the DVD drive out. Had every member of my family spill milk on it (fucking milk is not allowed around my computers any more) more than once. And it's still going fucking strong. These things are beasts.
>>
>>62221353
Yeah that's me, benefit of using a libre system is that I can swap my installation between computers with ease.

Butt plug is clickbait, it's for my girlfriend.

Are there any Thinkpads with reasonably decent color accuracy? Especially with a quad core CPU?

I also picked up a touchpad replacement and 1080p screen for around $100 bucks. Can't wait till it gets here and I'll be installing it and posting pics of the process when I get to it this week

Want to build a high-end PC at home with 1080ti or possibly a vega, r7 1700x and other such parts. I want to use this computer remotely from my laptop for developing (Visual Studio, several docker images, a *sql server and at least one backend server should be able to run simultanously through remote with little lag if done right) and at home for gayming.

I need a portable cheap thinkpad for work/school. It should work with a external 1080 monitor (work) and have good battery life elsewhere (school and others). I'm currently looking at a X230 with a i5-3230M, 4gb of ram (have 2 4gb sticks from current shit laptop), no ssd (have a used 128gb ssd from current shit laptop) for $200. Good or nah? Non-US.

Also, current laptop is a $400 fujitsu that has some shitty i3, a battery that lasts 1hr max currently, 15" and clunky and heavy as hell, all in all consumer tier garbage.

Good thing I bought a 90w brick as well, this is painful on the 65w.

Just a quick question, /g/:

How does the i5-2520M's performance compare the the newer mobile processors, such as the i5-7200U?

Obviously the newer chips are more power efficient, but exactly what is the performance jump exactly between the two?
>>
>>62222614
In addition, how long does the older chip have 'left'; how long can I realistically be using it until and upgrade is necessary to get acceptable performance?

>M to U

Not much. Remember, you're effectively dropping down a performance tier there as well.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7200U-vs-Intel-Core-i5-2520M/m153577vsm29

And obviously, a throttling 7200U would lose to a cooled 2520M. That kills a lot of modern chips.

>>62222649
The biggest issue you'll notice is lack of support for some instruction sets/hardware encoding. Not a big deal for now, but you might not have inbuilt support for the next meme video format and it'll be harder on your CPU.

Biggest difference by far is the iGPU.
