What are some genuine reasons for using one over the other?

Use a BSD for a coherent system - the base comes seperate from the 3rd party packages and is handled differently. The kernel & userland are developed at the same pace and kept in a single place, by the same developers - unlike Linux which has a seperate kernel and a seperate userland. BSDs have ports too, similar to Gentoo's emerge system but I find it to be better. FreeBSD has fantastic documents too.
