Screen tearing happens on most modern hardware since Xfce doesn't have a compositor. The same happens on LXDE and MATE.
Pic related.

Void.
Comfy unless xbps decides to not mark the packages installed on distro install as manual, so you accidentally uninstall everything and end up with a broken system on orphan package cleanup.

I honestly wish I knew, but it did. All I know is that I have to reinstall today. At least I have a list of everything that I installed, it'll be to just iterate through that and make sure the packages are all installed and marked as manual.

first you should know what desktop environment you want to use. ubuntu has all kind of flavors with different DEs, i recommend those, but dont try the standard ubuntu 17.04, as it uses unity which is kill. ubuntu 17.10 will come with gnomeshell, so you might try ubuntu gnome until 17.10 is released. or you might try Kubuntu if you like KDE more. All other DEs are basically memes.

It doesn't even have to switch to Wayland soon. It's just as functional as other DEs, has more options given to you especially for customization, it's more stable than Unity and KDE and it's very user friendly.
It beats other "light" DEs such as MATE, LXDE and LXQt in every way.
Honestly MATE, budgie and pantheon devs should just give up and stop dicking around and join Xfce. GNOME and Cinnamon are enough for GNOME-based desktops. I'm glad unity was abandoned.

Manjaro is not stable they hold back packages which means you could be at risk of not receiving security updates for a while unless you manually patch yourself (or unless they've been keeping up to date with what Arch is doing and pushing security fixes early).

Touche, anything's better than the pile of vomit that is LXDE (LXQT it's successor looks a lot nicer and is coming along nicely but still has work to do).

If you like Gnome then by all means give Fedora a shot. Fedora is essentially the flagship distro for Gnome because it's mostly made by RedHat employees.

Almost all distros are based on optional funding.
>>
>>62200999
Additionally, if you like a distribution or a project, you really should donate to it. It helps the devs and keeps projects alive. Unless you contribute code you should at least give 1-10$ to FOSS projects you like.
>>
>>62200999
Does it say on the page "type in zero to not pay"? It's not optional otherwise since it's almost forced upon the user unless they're clever enough to type in zero (you'd be surprised how dump some people are).

Optional means you have to "opt-in". If you're told you have to donate (only you can donate nothing) then that's not optional. Truly optional means the source is available and you can actually build the OS yourself if you really wanted to.
>>
>>62200967

Yes, it obviously does. If you DON'T want to pay you'd obviously type 0. Anyone who cares would at least try to type 0. People who are retarded enough not to do that are retarded enough not to know how to install an OS and wouldn't be on that site in the first place.

They should do. Not everyone is even aware that libre software survives on public funding. They should be made aware.

CloverOS.
>>
>>62201465
Rather than install and configure a bunch of packages individually, you declare your entire system in a file and tell the package manager to build it for you.

You can switch between configurations, revert back and forward at will, install multiple versions/configurations of the same package, and easily sync multiple systems together with the same configuration.

NixOS is the most popular declarative system.

you can remove systemD from arch if that's what you mean. if you're referring to "muh Stallman says it's not an approved distro" then that's just retarded. they don't list fedora and opensuse as valid libre distros simply because they allow you to install proprietary software.
>>

It's impure because it doesn't use a purely functional package manager.
>>

This seems comfy. How's package coverage? Find everything you need or have you had to build your own shit/look for alternatives? Also, how does it handle temporarily installed packages? The only package I personally couldn't find was a custom zsh theme. But I made a custom package in a few lines of my configuration. You can check out a pretty large subset of the packages here:

https://nixos.org/nixos/packages.html

Nix is designed to handle temporary packages extremely easily. There's a utility called `nix-shell` that lets you set up a quick environment with whatever packages you need:

nix-shell -p efibootmgr

Boom, you're in a shell with access to the efibootmgr tool. Don't even need to be root (though you'll probably need to use `sudo` to use efibootmgr at all). Once you type `exit`, you'll be back in your normal environment.
>>
>>62203406
That sounds neat. So if I run "nix-shell -p python" then I'll be dropped into a shell with python installed? Where does it go when I exit?
>>
>>62203479
Yep. And let's say you want to have a bunch of python libraries like numpy, you can just go:

nix-shell -p python pythonPackages.numpy pythonPackages.scipy pythonPackages.whatever

And you're now in a shell with python and those libraries installed.

All packages that are installed are put into individual folders in /nix/store. When you exit, the packages will still be there, but you won't have access to them. When a package isn't in use at all, it'll be deleted once you run the package garbage collector:

nix-collect-garbage
