First for the xx30 line and daily reminder that you only need to flash your EC (which requires no special hardware) if you wanna use chink batteries and the classic keyboard

Let's face it you're already buying a xx30 for it's better gpus anyway

>>
>>62196054
yea, pretty much just the iGPU
I usually play a little bit of games on it (2hu, osu! and emulators) and to be honest the tablet variants are really comfy for this
>>
I got an X230 a few months ago. Paid in pounds rather than colony coins though, so cost a little more. See if you can pick up a cheap ultrabase 3 dock; it gives you extra ports and a DVD drive for ripping music. Might want to change the paste on the CPU if you haven't already. It can be a little annoying to try and reconnect some of the cables after disassembly, but that's literally the only downside I've found so far.
>>
>>62195688
Just got my t430.
Should I format it? Would it be enough?
>>
Enjoying my T460 very much. Got it for €450 incl. 1 year on-site warranty. Bright 1080p ips/good battery/ssd/solid build quality.
>>
>>62196054
I bought a T440P for the better GPU on that.

>tfw no dropin laptop GPUs

If that was a thing on thinkpads they'd be literally fucking perfect for any task
>>
Looking for a glorified term for webdev/light coding stuff. Thinking about slapping a ssd inside a x200 or x220 but I'm afraid the x200 would shit itself running all those godawful electron apps or useless frameworks someone at school is bound to shove down our throats because muh future . How wrong am I ?
>>
Which thinkpad is best for peace of mind regarding intel ME?
Is coreboot enough or do I need to go full libreboot?
So far I have been looking at the X200.
>>
>>62196506
For complete piece of mind you should go no less than full autismo with libreboot and trisquel/parabola
>>
>>62196342
Some older ThinkPads have MXM slots. Not sure how well it worked though.
>>

>>
>>62196310

>>

Who makes that toaster sticker?
>>
Anyone gotten faster than 1600MHz ram to work in T440p? Crucial lists 1866MHz as working but I've yet to see anybody actually post it.

My setup:

T440p
1920x1080p IPS matte screen
t450 trackpad
Backlit keyboard
256GB 2242 M.2 SSD
512GB Samsung 850 EVO
i7 4700MQ

Does anybody know about the Thinklight? I have seen conflicting documentation on multiple sites saying it was an option for the t440p but I cannot find any components or any model with it.
>>
>>62196620
They're "/g/ approved toaster" stickers in tin foil
>>62196707
The guy at patchdynamics
He's gonna post here when he has them in stock

>>
>>62196706
Sorry but I'm a dumb newfag.
What should I look for in the bios?
>>
>>62196763
Oh you know the usual
Passwords, if you already haven't
Computrace and what not
Check if they played with any hardware settings (multi threading, hyperthreading etc)
Or just reset the bios and call it a day
>>
>>62196398
Honestly unless you want the free as in free autism vaccines, I say you'd benefit from the extra oomph for the x220 over a x200

>>62196803
Oh you meant that. Yeah it was the first thing I checked, thanks.
Is win7 ice any decent? Using it atm and doesn't look bad. When I'll buy an SSD and more ram I'll switch to Linux, but for now is there any reason I shouldn't use it?
>>
>>62196342
The elitebook 8770w doesn't have this problem
>>
>>62196824
No win 7 should be fine but I'm guessing you've got only 4 gigs of ram
I wouldn't push it too far though with that much ram
Though I can't see why you can't use Linux now

>>
>>62196199
That's nice anon
A bit too pricy if you're in the US but I'd guess that's mainly from the not shit amount of ram and SSD

>>
>>62196842
I'd like to start reading the Linux bible instead of throwing myself into stuff through tutorials and shit like I normally do, so I'd like to take my time and have a better experience overall with a faster pc and 8 gigs of ram and of course more knowledge on what I'm doing.

Looking to buy a refurbished T430, T430s or T440 to play around with - only problem I'm finding is that battery life is shite (2-3 hrs). Would it be wise to buy a cheap refurb and replace the batteries and swap out the DVD bay with a 3-cell?

I'm looking more towards 6-8+ hours battery life mostly on spreadsheets.

>>

Ultrabay (which is what the DVD bay is called) batteries don't work on T430 or newer
They only work the T430s (which believe me, it needs it the most)

Personally I can get around 4.5 hours from T430 with 6 cell so I don't know who told you 2-3 hours
I'd suggest you get a 9 cell and a T430 (and maybe a slice battery if you wanna go overboard)
That should get you around 8-9 hours ish

alright /g/, i've fallen hard for this thinkpad meme and have spent the majority of my free time the last couple days doing some research. i'll go through my process here for anybody else having trouble deciding what to get for their first thinkpad. After a good amount of autistic research, pining, budget concerns and contemplation, my choices were narrowed down to
>x230. inexpensive, comfy size
>x220. dropped. not enough oomph compared the similarly priced x230.
>T420. inexpensive, classic, very easy to find the optimal specs, widely accepted as the go to older model
>13. dropped. 2017 model is overpriced, and 2016 model is nowhere to be found, sadly. If it had an i7 or current gen i5, might be worth. Was seriously considering this, but in the end ive decided its just not worth it
>x270. comfiest modern form factor by far, absolutely insane battery life, better for budget than t470
>t470s. positives: powerful, has onboard ram as well as slots resulting in most memory capacity of modern thinkpads. Overall a more poweful and flexible machine than the x270
>x1 carbon. dropped. too much money, no real benefits over the x270 and t470s other than a nice bezel and screen

There were others, but they were all dropped earlier. I absolutely should buy an older, less expensive machine, play around with it, and then see if I want to upgrade at a later date....but god damn, I really want a nice, new, modern laptop. Any suggestions to models I may have missed in my search as a good alternative to the x230 and T420 would be appreciated. I want something fast enough to not make me constantly aware of how dated it is, and I'm a sucker for nice screens. The 12.5" form factor of the x series really appeals to me. this post is probably a giant mess, but its very late here, and I am tired, I know im a dumbass for focusing so much on the newer models, but im a sucker for shiny new things. the search has been fun regardless of what i decide on purchasing. thanks /g/

I get around 4 1/2 hours with 6 cell on t440p with i5 4300m. 9cell will certainly bring it up higher. haswell is significantly more efficient at idle consuming far less power but when it comes to actual usage there isnt much power difference between sandy, ivy and haswell. for spreadsheets id say t440

They're nice. I mean, you got to prepare for a relatively low resolution screen, but then again, their resolutions aren't any lower than any other corresponding non-touch model of the time. If you buy a used Thinkpad tablet, get a new hinge in case the one it comes with is worn.

>>

Yeah, 1366x768 isn't great but I can't really complain considering all x230s come with that resolution.
>>
>>62202995
I don't see why not. My x200T runs 720p 60 fps videos just fine. that has a dual core, 1.8 ghz CPU.
>>
>>62203155
It's 12" so you wouldn't be able to get more screen real estate out of it anyways. With a higher resolution things would be sharper but scaled to match 1366x768. Also, Linux compatibility would suffer.

I used to watch 1080p Blu Ray rips on my T400 with only Intel GPU and it worked fine. The system got kinda sluggish but the video playback was perfect. This was a Core2Duo 2.4GHz. A 2.5GHz i5 should be fine for 1080p video without any dGPU.

If the qualtiy drops with Plex your network could be at fault.
Anyways, if you can get an X230. The internal GPU is a massive leap away from that of the X220.

you're the one out of place, so why the fuck are you bitching towards me about it?

It's ok. Some parts are a bit flimsy but it may be from the previous owner. The keyboard is good, but the screen is bad. It's hard to get a good viewing angle and even with my glasses I have trouble seeing shit. I'm a bit concerned about the CD bay because the plastic flexes hard there. Other than that, it feels like an uncucked thinkpad. I'm not used to laptops so these may be a nonissue. I'm debating removing the jewtel sticker, I need to signal to goyim that I spent extra for an i7.

Is it worth $300 for the i7/8GB/500GB in very good condition? I'd say so.
>>
Hey /g/!
Some help? I have an IBM Thinkpad 600, the problem is, dont show nothing. The LCD 100% black.
Try connect the Thinkpad to a monitor, but nothing (i dont know if the function keys works).
Dont make sounds (beeps)

Anyone knows something?

I think the graphics chip is out, you're stuck man. Time to buy a new laptop
>>
>>62201518
No you're not, either get a AC or 9v battery bank or get the X series for battery life

Where to buy an used thinkpad in europe? I dont care much about the kb layout, just want a t440s or x230t with i7

>>62208332

Fug didnt mean to quote anyone

Oh too late now, everyone will know my mistake
>>
>>62210509
not really sure the i7 is worth it for the x230, it costs at least 20% more than the i5 model for a small performance boost
>>
What's a reasonable price to pay for a T430 with 1600x900 screen and 8GB RAM?

The guide doesn't provide price range for models that are above base spec.

Someone trade me their x220 for my modded vita (with sd2vita).

Reminder to nenver buy Thinkpads due to hardware DRM and whitelists.

Dell and HP are fine.

Nobody buys new Thinkpads here, and certainly nobody buys those Dell and HP cuckbooks.

>>
>>62210849
Haha, I too sold my VITA(for 150$) to get a Thinkpad recently. Thinking of getting a t430 or x230, now. I mainly sold it because I started to realise that gaymes are a waste of time, and hopefully I'll use the Thinkpad to learn something(programming, haxxing etc) and be productive. Playing old games once in a while doesn't hurt too.
>>
>>62213081
I bought a T430 and I never realized how capable the thing was and now I wish I had gone for a X230
Go for a X230

newfriend here, i like the x series but idk which model i should look for on ebay
>>

I don't know even then it's a tradeoff

just picked it up. Apparently it has the Nvidia nvs5400m in it. Guy didn't know.
The cpu is idling at like 65c and slowing to 1.2ghz, randomly spiking to 3.3ghz.Is that just normal on-battery behavior? I'm used to desktops.

That wasn't me, some other anon went on a question answering spree, for which I'm thankful for since I only now check in since the stickers tracking gave me a date of when the stickies arrive.

Also they're holo, not foil. Chances are he has 4chanX which saves the original filenames.
