is the mediocrity of FOSS vs Paid Software an example of why communism would never work?
no, FOSS and communism aren't remotely the same. Also a mediocre society can still be a functional society.
I believe so

No. Communism fails because it can't avoid the economic calculation problem. FOSS is still based on market principles, as people come together to create a product to satisfy demand. They often make some money from donations ("pay what you want") and/or service agreements. Not to mention, many bigger OSS companies mooch off corporate donations. However, those corporations are actually investing in better technology at a lower R&D cost, and they're garnering brownie points in the community.
>Economic calculation problem

>The economic calculation problem is a criticism of using economic planning as a substitute for market-based allocation of the factors of production. It was first proposed by Ludwig von Mises in his 1920 article "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth" and later expanded upon by Friedrich Hayek.[1][2] In his first article, Mises describes the nature of the price system under capitalism and describes how individual subjective values are translated into the objective information necessary for rational allocation of resources in society.

communism fails because it's nothing more than a tool for the rich and elite to concentrate wealth into their own hands
If you look at every case of "it's not real communism!" this is what you see. Communism is used by the rich to further enrich themselves, while useful low IQ idiots basically get scammed and often gulag'd and murdered.
"communism has never been tried" is really an admission that the entire ideology is only useful for this singular purpose: The sequestration of wealth in the hands of wealthy.
Perhaps this next time, if we allow the government to take all the wealth of the people to "redistribute", it will finally be real communism and actually end up in the hands of the people instead of the pockets of those doing the "redistribution". We failed at that last step where the wealth gets redistributed 100% of the time so far, but maybe this next time it will work and we won't get another totalitarian government oppressing and murdering millions or billions.

Good luck with that planned economy, pinko.
>mfw literally all the technically supreme FOSS projects owe their rank to code contributions by megacorporations

Free Software works reasonably well without killing millions of people because it's easier to copy software than it is to copy food.
