I'm going to be ordering your headphones and the he400i I believe in about 4 weeks for an AB, returning one, and getting an IEM or the ath-msr7.
I just have to hear vocals on an hd600 before I die.
The FX audio dac x6 is a steal because it actually has some output power unlike most other shit and as far as I can tell is transparent. I would have bought a magni but I had $70 that week and not $100.
Dragonfly is lack luster but I guess it's good for sensitive shit like my XBA-H1 and soon to be msr7.
Magni looks much nicer imo.

I have a question for audio experts, so I thought I'd try posting here

I have a really really crappy phone. The audio output of that thing is straight garbage and makes it completely useless to listen to music in my car. I want to spend ~$30 bucks to solve this problem. Is there something I can buy on Amazon? A headphone amp or a cheap mp3 player?

The lord thy god in heaven hath given me his blessing to lead ye wretched sinners away from the ignorant lies and injustice of these cursed blasphemers so that you need not languish in torment for hearing the foul cacophanies of your heathen 'phones.

I'm here to tell you boys that the way out of the bottle is clear, and that the true path into righteousness and eternal life points to itself. And that truth, o' my blessed brothers, is the Sennheiser HD600. Now go, go and thank the mighty father who sheds the blood of his only son that you might be shown his mercy for gifting thee with such a majestic and awesome way to receive his rapture.

HD 201 is pretty lousy.
Redundancy of LCD2 and LCD3.
Similar situation with HD 600 and 650. Might as well consider the ATH-R70X.
M100 is mostly a prettier finished version of the Crossfade LP. I do not suggest it.

K612 and K702 are worth a mention.
Same for DT770 and DT880. How to denote the various impedance versions?
Would be nice to denote V6 and 7506 pair.
Get around to the HD 800 and the Ether.
>driver principle
Don't do that. It would be worth mentioning with electrostatic headphones, since the drive requirements are so far removed from the other types of headphones.

>>
Just got my B&O H4 in today. They sound amazing and have great battery life. Would recommend.
>>
>>62193909

Yeah I can remove HD 201. They're getting discontinued/prices have doubled and people complain to me that they suck.

I take it you'd like me to kill the LCD3? It's double LCD2 price.

HD600 and HD650 I kind of want to keep because they're both similar in price and you can pick your preference.

I can swap M100 for crossfade LP.

AKG and Beyer are on my todo list. I haven't figured out how to denote impedance but at the least I will note it with a comment in the hover tool tip.

Thanks

I think DT880 Pro only comes one version. This will be the cheapest version in general.

There are some ideas I wanted to dredge up from an unfinished infographic. Serious work in progress, but it was an interesting start. The suggested changes to it are tied up in this comment chain.
https://warosu.org/g/thread/S59389372#p59390988

If you can set up a simple toggle for voltage sensitivity, that would be nice. Something like low/mid/high sensitivity. Electrostatic can be fenced off elsewhere.

Being above a certain sensitivty does not rule out the need for an amplifier as the non-zero output impedance from many sources produce distortion in dynamic cans.

Fell asleep. Thanks for the reply anon. I do love EQ as I've found it to make my dt990 sound significantly better. I don't mind it at all on my desktop but I do lack confidence in my eq settings. I'm going to be buying the he400i and hd600 to compare, returning one, and picking up a closed back portable or IEM. On the go I do not have access to an EQ that I am comfortable using.
I do have an hour long commute on a public bus but outside of engine noises it's quiet and only an hour so whatever. The other primary use case for the portable is on campus in the library or hall way where there also isn't insane back ground noise.
The heir has aesthetics going for it, hardcore, iit's fucking gorgeous but I feel as though there is no way an iem can offer similar depth and sound stage as even a closed back headphone. The ath-msr7 is also half the price.
Of course I could also forgo the one open back one portable option and just get a $500 portable that I would use for everything but I feel like even that would be inferior to a $300 open back like the he400i.

Alright, here's the deal: it's almost the end of 2017 and I've been using strictly only wireless Bluetooth headphones for the couple last years, simply out of principle and to gather all the needed first-hand experience on this entire "wired VS wireless" debacle. So, after using strictly only wireless headphones on a daily basis for almost two-and-a-half years, I can definitely without any doubt openly state that the "always pro-wired only" and "only highly expensive portable players, no pleb-tier smartphones" pseudo-audiophilic FAGGOTS are completely and absolutely FULL OF SHIT. I won't argue with anyone here that wireless headphones in general and wireless sound technologies in overall were utter garbage just 5-or-so years ago, but nowadays it's NOWHERE even remotely close to being as bad as it was in 2012 and further down the line. Everything (literally EVERY THING) the so-called self-proclaimed pseudo-audiophilic kiddie shithead trolls are openly and absolutely brainlessly proclaiming loudly everywhere about MODERN wireless sound technologies being "bad" or "not on par with wired" is COMPLETE, 100% BULLSHIT. Abso-effing-lute LIE. These retarded deaf kiddies clearly never used any modern wireless headphone piece that cost more than 50$ (and actually good/worthwhile wireless headphones start from the 140$ mark AT THE VERY LEAST) and/or they never tried Apt-X LL or ESPECIALLY the GODLIKE LDAC. The fags basically don't know jack about any of this, but they act like they're the hottest and most knowledgeable shits around the block while in reality they not hot shits, but just shit. Modern wireless sound IS actually very good and does NOT lose to wired at all by the sheer quality of sound and latency (if it's apt-X LL or LDAC), WHILE being WAAAY more convenient and comfortable to use due to headphones being completely (WELL, DUH!) wireless. Fuck all those pseudo-audiophilic pseudo-elitistic sudo-entitled "pro-wired" shitheads, I say. They know fucking NOTHING.

What's even more funny is the fact that I'm currently using several pairs of the most best wireless headphones that you can buy on the worldwide market in each price category (start - mid/high - top) in a combination with the best-sounding smartphones that are currently available out there, and was listening strictly only to actual raw WAV, FLAC, and redbook files. But underage pseudo-audiophilic faggots still get massively buttblasted about me "not using a proper setup", lol. This is so goddamn amusing that I'm literally laughing out loud right now, as I'm reading uneducated retarded crap such as the one produced by >>62198730.

>>62198895
>how-good-is-bluetooth-audio-at-it's-best

Oh come on. Apt-X was "kind of good" sometime ago, actually quite a long time ago, but nowadays it's either "Apt-X LL" at the very least or bust. Standard non-LL Apt-X is pretty bad latency-wise. And if you wish to go for the best possible audio QUALITY, then it's LDAC only.

>How do I greentext?

>>62198941
Apt-X is naturally way better than A2DP or other old crap, but it's NOWHERE even remotely close to being as ACTUALLY GOOD as LDAC is. Apt-X was "fine" for a while, but it's not anymore. Time to retire it.

>>62198960
Unfortunately, there are almost no actually decent/good models in that price range. The closest one you can get to be of a "decent sound quality" is Rombica's "MySound BH-10 2C", but they have extremely crappy Bluetooth range and they usually tend to bug out and turn off even if slightest electromagnetic interference is nearby (like, for example, when you're in a convenience store and standing near a commercial fridge). Also note that the are literally "Chinshit Wireless" headphones. If you never ever had a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones before and you wish to get ACTUALLY worthwhile device from the first attempt - you'd have to spend AT LEAST 120$ and these will be MEEElectronics' "Air-Fi Matrix 3" model. This is the EXACT very point where actual wireless QUALITY starts.
>>
>>62198989
Believe me, I want to ABX, but I won't bother with broken methodology.
I need an encoder, so that I can try it with the FLACs of my choice, on my equipment, with my ABX tool of choice.
Anything less it's just playing the audiophile "ooh, how well aptX sounds"
>on these samples
>handpicked to make aptX look good
>>
>>62199069
>more excuses
It's because you can't do it. Those samples are not indicated to be handpicked to "look good", saying so is completely disingenuous. You can download the samples and ABX them with whatever tool you want, don't tell me you're too retarded to even figure that out.
>>
>>62199069
>make Apt-X look good
It IS kind of good (apt-X HD and LL)...IF you never tried LDAC and never compared the two, that is.
>>
>>62195004
The paper focuses on two things: back EMF generated by the motor and the response shift.

A parallel resistor works because the presented impedance to the headphone drops based the parallel resistor. Back EMF is generated by the motion of a conductor relative to a magnetic field. To look at this problem, it might be helpful to break it apart into an equivalent circuit. Example here:
The voltage sources are both the amplifier and the headphone itself. The HPA-2 linearity is very good. The coil displacement, which generates the counter voltage, is nowhere near as linear for anything other than a very small displacement, which will be well above the resonance frequency.
The voltage from the headphone, distortion and all, is almost totally dumped into the driver. When you place a resistance in series with the back voltage, some of it gets dumped into the resistor. The back voltage, the back EMF, is being measured by Benchmark.

The impedance "seen" by the headphone drops when place the resistor parallel to the headphone load.
The frequency response shift is from the change on in the voltage drop.

LDAC is basically the one of the two only reasons why I was highly anticipating Android 8's release to begin with. Before Android 8 was announced LDAC was strictly a Sony-proprietary technology and was used only in their wireless devices of higher priced range. Now, starting with Android 8, LDAC will essentially be a default hi-end wireless sound codec in every smartphone and other wireless devices out there. What a time to be alive.

Detachable cables and a case help iems last a lot longer. You don't have to worry at all about iems breaking if you put them into a case after every use. I've been using my 1more triple drivers for almost a year and they're doing just fine thanks to their case.

>What version of Bluetooth do you need to use LDAC?
Considering that it started being implemented by default only from Android 8, I guess Bluetooth 4.1 at the very least.

>Have they also opened it up for non-Sony headphones or do I need a Sony wireless?
That we don't know yet, as there are simply no massive amount of Android 8-based smartphones on the market so far, but I personally highly doubt that this will be Sony-only when it becomes mainstream, simply due to default LDAC implementation in all Android 8 devices making no logical sense in the case if Sony decides to not license this to other wireless headphone manufacturers. They've already licensed this to Android 8, so why the hell will they restrict it only to their wireless headphones now? That will be an asshole move and will undoubtedly garner a lot of critique on Sony's ass. I don't think that Sony's THAT stupid as to not provide other wireless headphone manufacturers with a LDAC license. And even if (and that's a very big IF) they actually in all seriousness restrict LDAC usage only to their wireless devices, this still at least leaves us an option to not use a Sony smartphone for it if we wouldn't want to, so there's at least that.

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 SE (monitor, closed, neutral)
MEElectronics AirFi Matrix 3 (monitor, half-open, bright)
Marshall Monitor Bluetooth (monitor, closed, V-shape)
Master & Dynamic MW60 (monitor, closed, V-shape)
Bang & Oulfsen H9 (monitor, closed, neutral)
Sony MDR-1000X (monitor, closed, warm-to-neutral)
Onkyo W800BT (IEM, closed, neutral)
JVS HA-S90BN (monitor, closed, V-shape)

All of these currently available headphones are absolutely worthwhile wireless solutions. The most expensive one in that list is Master & Dynamic MW60 and even it is not really overpriced (usually sells for 600$, but can be found for a cheap as ~420$ at some places during sale-off days).

A little note, Heir now sells the "4.Ai S". Lovely naming scheme.
It is possible that they got around to fixing the mid-treble problem of the 4.Ai. Given Heir, I wouldn't be so sure. Can be difficult to find models.
I would not worry so much about depth and soundstage. For headphones it is by and large determined by the magnitude of the frequency response, the EQ bit.

I suppose we'll just have to worry about fit and shit when you get to it.
>>
>>62198895
The real test would be to re-encode the sample clips to 128 kbps mp3 and see how they sound. That's how Youtube would sound with bluetooth headphones.
>>
Someone tell me if this is good or not. I don't trust /csg/ to give me a good opinion on headphone quality.

Etymotic
>>
>>62198895
The three music samples provided are poor examples for this purpose: none have loud crash/splash cymbals high up in the mix, which would be the easiest way to hear lossy artifacts. Cherrypicked, indeed. That being said, the Pink Floyd sample, one I'm very familiar with, after being re-encoded to 128 kbps mp3 sounded noticeably lower-fi than lossless. The real problem with Bluetooth isn't the codec on its own, it's playing back lossy content with the codec, meaning stacking lossy codecs. Most people use their headphones to do more than just play back lossless content, so for the majority of users, who like to do things like use Youtube, Bluetooth headphones do represent a considerable loss in fidelity.
>>
>>62202056
Encoding AptX to 128kbps is totally different from encoding 128kbps mp3 to AptX. A transparent codec will be transparent no matter the source. Unless you have the FLAC of your YouTube video, you won't be able to tell the difference.
>>
>>62202120
>Unless you have the FLAC of your YouTube video, you won't be able to tell the difference.
So you're conceding that there will be an audible difference between listening to a FLAC through wired headphones and listening to Youtube through AptX bluetooth headphones. Got it.

That could be. My original Modi had some weird sound issues from being powered by the usb (getting a wyrd fixed it). I must confess, my modi died about a week ago and so I'd been using my motherboards sound sent to my Magni. So while my comparison is only by memory, the multibit sounds better to me. If I could do a side by side I'm sure the difference would be marginal, but I do think it sounds better than I remember and I'm quite happy with my purchase.

From Schiit themselves

How about the Modi Multibit?
Modi Multibit has exactly the same inputs, finish, and controls as Modi 2 Uber (and also a large, stylized “M” screened on the top that looks kinda like a space invader—and helps designate it as a Modi Multibit.) But it’s profoundly different from the Modi 2 Uber inside:

Architecture: Instead of a conventional delta-sigma architecture, the Modi Multibit uses our own, entirely new multibit architecture.
Digital Filter: Instead of using the digital filter embedded in the AK4490 DAC, the Modi Multibit features our own unique closed-form digital filter implemented on an Analog Devices SHARC DSP—the same filter used in the Bifrost Multibit.
D/A Converter: Again, instead of using a delta-sigma audio DAC, the Modi Multibit uses an Analog Devices AD5547 medical/military-grade D/A converter—the same D/A converter used in the Bifrost Multibit.

nice quad quads.

Yea, I like them. Very interesting sound signature, hard to get used to (sometimes the bass sounds great, other higher bass levels sometimes are lacking). but they are super accurate, and the sound stage is insane for in-ears. My biggest issue is comfort, in that during a long listen the plastic part that goes around your ear can sometimes get uncomfortable. I want to fix this by bending them in hot water, but I haven't taken the time to do that yet.
