>he still doesn't use his own domain for email
Why? Your email provider is spying on you. And even if you don't care about that, using your own domain means you can keep the same email address while switching providers. You never have to change your email address again.
Well how do I do it

I am considering it. But I am waiting for a new tld to come out with a domain name I can be happy with keeping.
by domain, do you mean running your own mail server?
I tried to do this but got stuck on the DNS records. I think my problem lies in me trying to host my website and the email server from the same machine. Does anyone have any advice?
how do I do it?

Securing an email server is a fair bit of work. I just use gmail.

That shouldn't be a problem. I have both on the same machine, but it won't work in a home machine because your reverse DNS has to point back to you mail domain, and only things like VPS let you do that.

Who said anything about setting up own server? Just own domain. You can use it with jewgle or any other provider after that, and switch on a whim.

Because the NSA/CIA doesn't tap everything and just siphon off your email data in transit anyway?
