Is an e-mail based chat application viable?

Seems pointless when compared to actual P2P chat protocols.
Also a "normal" conversation would most likely trigger most services throttling and spam measures due to the amount of mails getting sent back and forth per minute.

I just want to stop using skype but I would have to convince literally everyone I know to stop using skype as well. Email would be the easiest alternative since everyone already has it.
