Any good alternatives to the Etymotics HF5 or HiFiMan RE400? I don't like the form of the HF5, and I heard the build quality of the RE400 is pretty bad, so what alternatives are there in a similar price range for neutral in ear phones?

How does the Etymotic MC5 compare to the Etymotic HF5? The MC5 is at half the price of the HF5.

Thanks in advance.

How the fuck will I ever pick? This is such a competitive market. Not to mention this isn't even counting IEMs

Audio Technica MSR7 - $200 (Considered bright, gorgeous)
NAD VISO HP50 - $150 (Price drop, can't tell if fold, ugly)
V-MODA M-100 - $250 (Signifficant bass boost, nice looking)
Sony MDR-1A - $200 (nice design, tyll said <<msr7)
B&O Play H6 - $237 (Zeos likes)
Koss Pro4s - $150 (Either no treble or shitty innerfidelity target)
Beyer DT1350 - $175 (^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ also ugly)
Beyer T51P - $200 (literally what the fuck is that FR)
Senn HD25+ - $200 (no bass no mids or shit tyll measurements ugly)
PSB M4U 1 - $230 (god tier FR from the looks of it, rolled trebles tho, why the FUCK do they look like beats)
KEF M500 - $300 (Stylish, Bass a good 10db higher than mids, no treble, wtf)
Oppo PM-3 - $400 (Shitty non removable pads with fake peeling leather, probably sound like an angel though)
Momentum 1.0 -~$170 (no mids no treble, looks similar to m500)
Bose Soundtrue 2 - $100 (FR looks okay on rtings but >rtings)
Bose QC35 - $350 (Great FR, expensive, botnet app)
Hifiman Edition S - $150 (cant find measurements, prob shit)

My budget etc., I found a few BT headphones within that price range like the Sony MDZ/MDX series (what' the difference even?) and a Phillips SHB5500/7000 series headphones. I'm not sure which ones are better in terms of quality/durability.I'm not too bothered about sound quality (as long as it's not walmart tier), just something that doesn't really break.

You need to narrow down your needs, Anon, for example, you seem to want isolation, do you need it to be very portable too? There's a big difference between wanting a headphone to listen to on bus travels or walking, also, on-the-go headphones should be sturdy so you don't break them easily, checking build quality might help eliminating a few options.

MDR7506 is waaay better than the M20X, Anon, a better ATH option would be the M40X (which is actually a little closer to neutral than the MDR7506, still, the MDR7506 is built like a tank, if later you decide to get auray sheep skin pads for it you will be getting a headphone for life.
>>
>>62156220
I'm not I just made a list of closed back stuff above $150 really
>>
>>62156152
Because I chose to put blu-tack underneath so the entire unit is stuck solid in place. This stuff isn't cheap, I don't want it getting knocked off my desk for some reason. And on top of that, plugging in different headphones makes these things move all over the place. It's very easy to lock small amps down with blu-tack.
>>
>>62156178
>So I couldn't get my hands on the quad esl57s or the Vega 56 (it sold out in seconds)
You'll get more chances re: Vega 56. I recommend BeautifulSoup's python bindings if you're in a hurry. Friend got his at MSRP (scan.co.uk). Murika might be somewhat harder.
>I've ordered the he-400i direct from hifiman after a/bing them some more today and deciding I like the mids on the he-400i better than the m1060 (both headphones are great though).

What should I get, /g/

Etymotic Hf5
Rockit r50
Vsonic GR07

I'm looking for good isolation, durability/build quality, as well as comfort. I'm a pleb and I simply use my computer's default sound card or my cellphone, no amp.

I mostly play vidya, but I listen to classical music, weeb music, jazz and lofi hip hop.
>>
>>62156227
Ok, i get why you need isolation, check which options have detachable cable, it's usually the first thing to get ruined, next check which ones can have pads replaced.
You can also see how the isolation is on most measurements websites.
FR is a personal thing, but in my experience something leaning towards bassy sounds better on bus rides since the engine tends to swallow most of the bass during the ride.

>>

You know there are a ton of other options at $100? I think the simgot en700 bass has a very easy to like sound. I rec'd them to my good friend and he loves them.
Hf5 is accurate as fuck but some people complain about no bass and negative sound stage.

I just helped a dude earlier who had a right ear cup go out, actually. That was the v6 but it happens to all similar models. the cord is heavy and the solder connection is weak so overtime gravity and play makes it loosen and your right ear stops working. It's hit or miss because while my dad has one that has lasted forever, mine and my friends only lasted a few years. 7506 detachable cable mods are very common

I never liked the hd600s even when I was younger, and my original posts were for my personal amusement.

I don't know about competitive market so much as there there are very low barriers to market entry. Anyone willing to start a small business can just jump into the headphone market and start producing crap.

>>62156494
It isn't necessarily a matter of placing it on the coupler. The headphone could just be defective.
I mention this since something of that sort happened to my own headphones and the HD25 was one of them.

>>62156083
RE400 and HF5 have similar form factor. HF5 is the slimmer and easier to wear version of the MC5. MC5 barrel makes it harder to fit.
MC5 was usually around a similar price as the slimmer MK5.

>>62156300
They still sell the Rockit R50? I thought that company shut down years ago. Not like the R50 was a particularly unique design, it's built on a general OEM kit.
GR07 is too heavily vented to isolate well.
HF5 can work on isolation. Not everyone likes the bundled sleeves. Westone Star, Comply T-100 foam, Shure Foam, and the Klipsch sleeves are alternatives. Not sure about the ruggedized build, but it's not especially frail.
May as well consider the SE215. People seem to like the fit more. Bass heavy.

at least plebspotters makes decent recommendations and the reactions he gets out of the sennheiser fanboys is otherworldly

This isn't even a real thing. People love the 600's and 650's because they're generally great. It's not the same as one autist trying to tell other that a particular headphone isn't good.

I'll check it out.
Do you have any recommendations for earphones that are worn straight down?

>>62156758
It's still being sold, they have a detachable cable now too, but after looking at it more closely, it's worn over the ear, which I'd like to avoid. I have the SE215 and I just find it uncomfortable to wear for a prolonged period of time, the build quality is great though.

sennshill pic+timestamped his hd600s and then made the trip in response to the plebspotter shenanigans.

he is unironically a triggered fanboy who thought that pouring gasoline on a fire would make things better, and plebspotters took a royal shit on him while sennshill repeatedly shit on himself.

the acclaim isn't universal, and the hd600 push a lot of people out of the audio hobby because of the hype around them. people buy them because of the rampant fanboy recommendations and when they realize they don't like the sound/the headband breaks or both they just cut their losses and stop doing anything involving the audio hobby.

source: 2 irl friends who bought hd600s before starting college, one had his headband snap, both sold their source equipment and headphones and never got back into high quality headphones again.

Right now I've got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros and have been super happy with them. Anything that will be a similar sound signature and better or equal sound quality without the wire? Mostly will be used for movies, shows, and gaming hooked up to my computer. Price range is anything <$500

Well, most earphones are traditionally designed to be inserted deep into the canal. The Etymotics aren't unique in this regard. I think the sleeves may give off the wrong impression. I would suggest the MK5 over the MC5 anyway. HF2 and HF3 may be on sale. Anyway-
The XBA-100, the LG HBS-900. Apple's in-ear is fairly on point, but ill suited to high playback level. Everything would be so much easier with EQ.

Im powering them with a Fiio Q1, which is okay but I would love a desktop DAC/AMP for home use, while keeping the Q1 for travel, or selling it and the M50X to fund it maybe.

Is the Schiit Fulla 2 good enough for the HD6XX? I read through an archive someone posted earlier and saw most people said it can't drive the HD600s too well, and it would be a good idea to get a separate amp like the Magni 2.
Is this still the case? Also if so, what would be some good Aux to RCA cables? It looks like the Magni 2 only has RCA input.

I'm sure it works fine, in the same sense train trip gift earbuds work fine. The k120 is the "entrypoint" membrane keyboard that I do actually recommend to people who are making their first build, have no keyboard and have no budget.
But it's silly to be that cheap on input devices, particularly as you likely use your keyboard a lot, and headphones show you should have some sort of budget which should allow for mechanical switches.
>>62157930
>Shit corsair (k70)
It was free (gift), and I actually do like it a lot. It's surprisingly good for one of the cheapest full-sized mx brown based keyboards. I do prefer the Das Keyb, but that's mostly because I like how the body feels cold at touch, and how the keys somehow make way less noise than the corsair, despite being the same switch (definitely to do with the keyboard body). The k70 is seriously a steal for the price it's selling at.

I used the HD600 with the Fulla 2 for a full week recently, just as a test. It's fine. It's true it'll distort a little if you play loud music with the volume knob at about max, but that's at WAY too unhealthy volume, and I'd never even know the difference if I didn't have the schiit stack to compare it with.
If you've got nothing (which seems to be the case), I'd seriously suggest the Fulla 2 over anything else. Chances are you do not need to spend any more than that, and it is definitely a more nifty and useful device overall than the others at its price bracket.

Alright, thanks anons. The HD6XXs get here in December or possibly January depending on how things go. I'll at the very least wait until I can test them myself then.

Currently I just have a pair of ATH-M50s that I will probably use as my travel/work headphones. The Fulla 2 powers these quite nicely at just below the 9 o'clock range, but I was told it does pre-amp for its amplifier and was worried that if the HD6XXs needed anything above 11 or 12 o'clock it might not sound right. Thanks again.

I swear I looked at 5 different headphones with an identical frequency response to that of the purple line in your graph.
WHich headphones are those? It doesn't say in your pic or post.
>>
>>62158256
Some headphones you need 10dB of headroom for EQ purposes. The HD6XX is not one of them. You'll be aight unless you like your classical super loud.
>>
>>62157989
Sounds like his Fulla is defective. That or Schiit specs are wrong. Or it clips its own gain. Or he has no idea what he talking about. It could even be a combination.
Enough is determined by how loud you want the device and how much voltage the amplifier can supply into the headphone. As it turns out, because the device is voltage controlled, the power spec is not useful.

>>62158234
You can easily rig it by manipulating the fit, adjusting the clamp.
Closed backed headphones have a common trait of being very sensitive to fit. It's not inherent, but it is common.
>>
>>62158256
It only distorts on HD600, too. The HD598 is fine.
HD380 is also fine (with fulla2 on laptop), but plugged to the hub I have at home, it will actually trip the resettable fuse in the hub somewhere past 12 o'clock with these headphones. This doesn't happen with HD600, surprisingly.
>>
>>62158256
I use my fulla 2 around 12 o'clock with HD600s, higher with quieter tracks.
>>
>>62158326
During my week of testing, I found I used it mostly between 9 and 12 for most music/anime/videogame use, going a little higher only when watching some movies/series that are mastered low.

As for the SE215.
Dunno, I have medium-long hair and I wear glasses, so if it's not my hair getting in the way, it's my glasses. Plus having a coil around my ear just feels odd. I can never get used to it. I've had it for months.

How do you store your headphones? Mine has usually just set on the side of my desk but thats hard to do with more than one pair.

Was looking at the hooks that mount under the desk that hold 2 but I have a cat that would likely play with them while theyre there.

depends on the earpads.

can't imagine I'd ever buy and keep used velour earpads from someone else. It'd probably cost you around $90 for a pair of replacement earpads which would be almost $200, the price for a new one, should you do this in your case.

I have AKG K702s and I'd probably just sell them for $50 to a friend or just give it away. I'd feel bad if I sold it to them for anything more than $100.

these parts feel really lame and cheap

>>
>>62158651
watch out for the HD6XX should it ever come out again. Shit sold 11K units within a few weeks to a niche market for a reason. They're a rebranded HD650 that are priced at US$200 so that's basically around a discount of CAD$300 for us in Canada.

i heard the K7XX have amazing earpads (similar/identical to the higher end K712), so it sounds like a bummer to me if you're buying it used. Return it ASAP if they smell like dog or smoke or something, dunno how well memory foam can take a wash.

HD600 uses less power. It requires more voltage.

>>62158366
I cannot find the Rockit R-50 at all. I don't how you're finding the R50. It wasn't a cable over the ear design though.
>cannot get used to it
I guess. It's usually the best solution for reducing cable noise, so that can be an issue. It's also a fairly common style of fit as well.
I mentioned the HBS-900 and some other stuff that could work before.

The trick is making sure all the electricity gets from one end to the next.
It doesn't mean anything for the 600 and 215, just about anything works.

Looking for a new pair of headphones after my pair of m40x broke after about two years of heavy use, and after having to super-glue the swivels back in after they fell out. Will remember not to grip the headphones by the headbands instead of by the pads to reduce stress on the swivel and hinges.

Budget is ~$150
Need to be durable enough to get through a few years of college, and comfortable enough to wear around neck when not in use as I cannot be asked to carry around a case.
Minimal audio leaking from headphones is preferable
Audio quality should be on par with the m40x's
Needs to have a replacable headphone cables, as I have terrible luck with them in the past.
