I'm absolutely in love with this 18 carat, rose gold TAG Heuer Carrera watch purchased from the beautiful city of Perth. Made with sapphire infused glass that only diamond can scratch, I've spoiled myself with this gorgeous timepiece. The calibre 16 movement has been crowned as the most successful automatic chronograph movement ever produced, completely handmade by man. It is also my very first day date watch and it will be interesting to see if it becomes an important feature that Will depend on over time. I hope you all enjoy this watch as much as I do.

>And how many "reputable brands" are selling diver shaped watches for less than $500 that you would trust to actually be usable as dive watches without ISO certification or having the watch pressure tested yourself post purchase?
>The whole goddamn point of ISO certification on affordable dive watches is to signify that each and every one has been pressure tested by the manufacturer.

Firstly, there's a ton of companies other than Seiko selling dive watches under $500 that are plenty capable of diving, at least to the incredibly low bar that is ISO spec. Citizen, Orient, Casio, Hamilton, Steinhart, even that guy's shitter Invicta (with the Malaysian Seiko movement inside a Chinese case, just like your SKX) is capable of satisfying the specs. Every watch is pressure tested by the manufacturer, "ISO certified" or not. Again, the ISO is not a testing body, it is merely a standard setting organization, hence the acronym. It is up to the manufacturers to test their own watches, and every reputable company does so.

Also, your being pedantic and calling certain watches "diver shaped" to distinguish them from your shitter Seiko doesn't make it so, unless you wish to cast aspersions on Submariners and Seamasters, too.
>>
>>62154908
you forgot that 60 dollar vostoks can probably go far deeper than an skx while not being certified for jack or shit.

>>
>>62154908
Also, real divers use dive computers, not fucking mechanical wristwatches with movements from the mid-nineties. So, if you're still wondering what watch an actual diver would choose, it's not gonna be an SKX (or an NY0040, or a Ray II, or a Submariner, or a Seamaster): it's gonna be a fucking dive computer, and maybe a G-Shock.

Should i go for it or is it too much of a poors man Rolex? thoughts?
>>
>>62155585
That's one of the few good Tudors.
>>
>>62155585
meh, they have the finishing of a rolex, and in house movements, so in that respect they're pretty legit. the best part about them is probably the fact that rolex are pushing the tudor brand hard, so they're probably going to begin to appreciate or at least hold steady, giving you good resale vale.

iirc the tudor case is kinda weird in that it's just totally flat on the sides, so it gives the watch the profile of some 17mm thick behemoth, which i'm not a fan of

i'd definitely shop around, $3k gives you a ton of dope options for divers/sport watches, the black bay is just one of many

damn man what movement is it? The shitty invicta i got august 15 was set the day i got it against nist time and was off by less than 4 seconds today when i checked it. <4 seconds over 14 days on an un-adjusted nh35. I got super fucking lucky. Seiko movements can be hit or miss but they are typically pretty good. 15 seconds falls well within seiko spec however so if you didn't get it off amazon i would just live with it or adjust it.

yeah same movement. Seiko allows for +35 to -45 on that movement. even their 8l35 is only rated from +15 to -10. Like it says in the video they typically hold much tighter tolerances but that rating is that high because a sufficient quantity of movement fall in all parts of that range.

What's the difference between the Seiko 5 and the Seiko 5 Actus when it comes to vintage watches? I know that Actus is a sub brand referring to the lower end models, but is there a difference in build quality, features, etc?
>>
>>62158039
I wonder where the typo came from. Possibly an m->μ, but the numbers are very approximate anyway since the COSC standard for quartz is 26 s/yr. If they meant 1 μs/s that would also make more since. Then again, it was an aside and not very important to the authors.
>>
>>62158088
i am not trying to be a dick but why would you care? What reason would you have for buying an old watch that was cheap when it came out, is sitll cheap now, probably doesn't work very well, with a service price far higher than a purchase price?

So what's the deal with dive watches that have ridiculous depth ratings on them? I can get 100 or 200m, but something like 1000m sounds pretty pointless nowadays since any diver that's at that level of skill would be using a dive computer.
>>

>>
>>62158504
It is totally pointless. Some people used to use them back before computers but now a days its more a meme. There was a point were they were still used and sold to the mass market to fund development and make some additional monies. They can really only be used by saturation divers anyway who are paid pretty well and mostly just went for the rolex divers.

Chapter ring engraving is to help blend in the serial number and make it harder to fake a Rolex. Same with the crown engraving. Those you have the Chinese fakers to blame. I do agree with the size but that hasn't changed too drastically.
And by paragraphs on the dial do you mean the usual
>Rolex
>Oyster-perpetual
>GMT-master
>Superlative chronometer
>Officially certified
Like they have had for years and years and years? Maybe you just don't like Rolex?
>>
>>62158300

The paragraphs are more or less unchanged. The crown engraving is unobtrusive and helps stop fakes so isn't really a negitiave imo. I can understand the chapter ring thing. Size is Size, it's developed as tastes have like every watch has.
>>62158672
If by newer you mean 1950's Rolex sure. The original subs did have very clean dials but that didnt last too long. A year or so after the fist subs you had the GMT, a couple years after that the first sea dwellers both had paragraphs. And then the subs followed suit. And the modern Rolex movements are leaps and bounds better than their older ones which is a lot of the attraction to new Rolex for me 2bh.
>>
>>62158672
I know saturation divers can go deeper if they use other technology. The deepest scuba dive however is around 330 meters.

those super strong dive watches are all for saturation diving. The seiko in the photo was developed for helium after the swiss developed the helium escape valve.
>>
>>62158857

>>
>>62158896
But then they would not be Rolex.
>>
>>62158910
You know what blows my mind. Why didn't invicta copy the original sub instead of the new one and sell a "unique" product. Imagine if you could get a 38mm vintage sub like diver with a seiko movement in it for 80 bucks?
>>
>>62158910
They already do that to an extent with metals, sizes and colour ways. All they would be adding was dial layouts on top of that. Still very Rolex.
>>
>>62158672
this watch actually looks more useful as a diver than modern subs Marked minutes on bezel, longer and wider hands making it more legible, seconds lume on the seconds track. Looks like an actual tool watch as apposed to more modern subs.

Divers need to start using Helium for anything past 70m, or 40m to be 'safe.' Even then saturation diving rarely goes past a few hundred meters.

Modern Rolex Subs aren't that far off, people just seem to love to hate them for changing. Seconds lume has moved, hands are the same other than the hour hand is more obvious, minute track is short only going to 15min, added lume pip to the bezel to make the orientation more obvious.
>>
>>62159047
no the cases were developed specifically when they were in a helium rich atmosphere. helium escape valves and super strong watch cases are useful for saturation divers.

Well, it just has a thin bezel and applied indices which make it look substantially dressier than the more practical/toolish dive watches you find for cheap. Idk, I guess it's just my touchstone when I think "dressed up diver".
>>
>>62157503
So does water resistant to "50" mean I can have shower with it on.
I was sold a water resistant phone to like 40meters and it died. When I took it back they said its not water proof
>>
So I was changing a battery on a shitter with a snap on caseback, it went well, but I just couldn't press it back. The gasket was quite hardened and it started to deform and eventually I accidentaly cut it.
Anyway, so a new softer gasket should be enough? Because the last few times I took off that caseback it popped back on really easily. Or it could have deformed or something and I also need to buy a press now?

Why the fuck are people so obsessed with wearing their watch under the shower
Just look at the time before you enter it, and if you're in a hurry shower as fast as you can. You don't need to know the time for the 10 minutes tops you're going to spend in here.
Depending on many factors, showers can be bad for waterproof watches. Hot water+soap isn't easy on the gaskets. Most people will tell you it's fine and they never had a problem but there's always the odd one out.
If you shower with your watch, there's a slight risk you might damage it.
Stop being autistic and just take it off for fucks sake. You don't fucking need it. Wash your wrist instead.
>>
>>62159926
So apparently some watches have a hard red gasket instead of the usual. Phuck me dead, this is a pain in the ass, but the watch was a gift so I have to fix it somehow

I'll have you know that it is in fact a British company started by Thomas Earnshaw in the 1800's. As many have pointed out (and I really appreciate the support), "high end" is subjective and really depends on the spectrum of watches he/ she can afford. This watch, believe it or not, is high end in terms of what I will come to own in my lifetime. I didn't post for any other reason than to share my watch with a group of people who could appreciate it. Don't prove me wrong.
>>
>>62164497
This post embodies a lot of the reasons I don't post in what should be communities for my hobbies (but I do comment!). It's a nice piece, enjoy it! Luxury is a feeling, an experience. As long as you get that feeling, then who cares. I've been working for a decade and my first treat was much more modest than this and to me, still feels luxurious. So by my standards, you're doing ok!
>>
>>62164519
Couldn't agree more! You strike me as a modest and humble man. The problem is that there seems to be a certain set of brands that you can post about without backlash which is ridiculous and cuts off a large proportion of gorgeous watches.

First off, that watch looks like a fake breguet. The case is breguet, meant to look like a rose engine turned dial, and a fake tourbillon looking thing.

Not so much about this watch, but chinese watches, and the chinese in general- they have the resources to make original things but they chose to make cheaper versions of pre existing shit. This is a perfect example.

I don't like that post because I think he's either deluded into thinking he has a hand crafted piece of art, or trying to convince himself. My seiko 5 is a solid watch but isnt a family heirloom.

And yeah, the QC for this stuff is shit, the build quality is shit and is not in the same league as haute horology.

Cosmostron 7803 anon are you here? I've been trying to get this shit properly running for months now. Does the seconds hand on yours speed up wildly when you shake the watch?

At the risk of replying to bait...

Speaking as only one collector, my interest in watches is mostly the different approaches that people have taken to measuring time. Almost universally, modern watches are either swiss-lever escapement powered by a mainspring. There are certainly exceptions, but most of the exceptions are expensive (TC quartz, CSAC, Sprind Drive, etc) or very expensive (remontoire, fusee, constant-force escapement, detent escapement, etc).

Vintage watches (early 70s in particular) are full of unusual tech, and generally extremely cheap.

>>62168042
That's not how these old Russian watches work, this isn't like an Amphibia where you can just type some random numbers into Google 710059 and maybe get a watch. They made a couple of different cases with a fuck ton of dials, and you're at the mercy of eBay when it comes to getting a specific model.

Personally, I enjoy 70's designs much more than modern ones. The fact that they can be had for a song and a dance is just a bonus.

I agree, that guy was an insufferable faggot, while this guy is probably just a mis-informed victim of marketing. Weren't we all when we first thought that a particular watch looks nice?
When you think about it I'm really grateful for /wt/ for making me realize what is what in watches, imagine if you spent all your time in a hugbox, you would just be as clueless as when you first started

This is why I would never gift anyone a mechanical watch if they weren't already interested in them. I got a Skagen for my mom's birthday because she wanted a watch on a bracelet and she loved it. Concepts such as finishing, dial material (it seemed like literal cardboard), hands, etc. are lost on most people. It reminds me of Joe Rogan bitching that Rolexes are shit because he has to set it every half-month or so

>>
>>62169368
Metal case instead of clad plastic, and because it's focused towards the concept of a fashion watch instead of "You're broke as hell and need a decent watch, buy this one". It's the same reason why the aluminum Timex Mk1 is $75 (with an MSRP of like $90) while the similar Scout is like $35 to $40.
