I got a 2011 macbook for free and it's alright. I'm gonna do some development on it with XCode. I had plans on installing linux on it but i decided to force myself to use macOS for a week to see how it ran and I actually quite like it. As a former distro-hopper who'd seen the best and worst of Linux, I almost felt dirty telling my other /g/-tier shiposting friend that I actually enjoyed the system. The UNIX 03 compliance made me feel comfortable knowing not much would change if it didn't need to, and the brew package manager has all of my most used linux tools (htop, vim, wget, etc) available and working just as well as they would on linux. The UI is meh, but it gets the job done, albeit with a few quirks I had to get used to. Is macOS the real 'UNIX for human beings'?

I recently bought a used MacBook Pro 2012 (non-retina) and replaced the hdd with an sad and the ram (two matching 1600Mhz 4GB LDDR3 sticks). If you install an ssd make sure to enable TRIM, since macOS doesn't do that on default. I also disabled the sudden-motion-sensor, local time machine backups (using the old hdd for that) as well as sleep image and logging of access time.

Other than that I'm relatively new to macOS and especially Mac-hardware.

I use 2x8GB DDR3 1866 in my 2012 MBP (13") just fine. They're Kingston 1.35V something, I don't exactly recall. But yes, generally speaking, macbooks are finicky when it comes to RAM.

Got the latest macbook air two months ago for uni work (software engineering) and its great. Been using linux since i was 14 and always hated mac to go with the flow but mac is basically if xfce4 and gnome merged and included rofi. Was really suprised it even uses xterm with bash as default. There are still some use cases for VGA anyway with projectors.

As one person pointed out when he made a video on why he was returning is 2016 Macbook Pro, he does presentations all over the US and he has to work with whatever projecting gear they have, which could mean VGA only input.
He had the USB adapters he needed for his older Macbook Pro but now that he could only use USB-C from it he had to get new dongles and sometimes there would be issues with them not working properly etc

I fully understand that we can't support all ports forever but for some people that port being present will be a mark in favor of the product when a person is looking to buy.
