Why is Captcha so hard and buggy to use?

because AI is getting smarter and they're pressuring us to do more work.

I'm pretty sure recaptcha is sourced from books. anything could slip in there.

Captchas were invented 20 years ago when computer vision was a joke. Back then it was impressive when your computer could recognize a cat in a picture 3% of the time.
Now machine vision has vastly improved and is surpassing human accuracy at many tasks. People sell software and services to break captchas for trivial amounts of money. Or you can just outsource it to a bunch of indians.
So they've responded by ratcheting up the difficult and changing shit as frequently as possible to try to break the spammers systems. And this causes trouble for meat machines as well.

AI still can't do Google's captcha, all the captcha solving services you see are actually just you sending your captcha to some chink or pajeet who gets paid 0.0005 cents to complete it
