Gonna be doing the final regulation on this old shitter.

Setting the balance in beat is a nightmare, since these don't make the ticks at the same time as Swiss lever escapements, which confuses the timegrapher.

thanks to the anon who sent me the dj to mess around with. I have it all in pieces and will try to mess around with the movement but i am relatively certain it needs parts as the hour post has become detached from the gear train and the movement wont function for more than a few seconds. In case you were curious its a DG2803 movement.

brass is really a shit metal for a watch. gold is as well but if you are wearing a tux and a gold dress watch its probably only hitting your cuff link(which should also be gold) if anything. any daily watch you have should really be steel and most are for that very reason.

Pretty much the cheapest automatic 200m diving watch you can get if you're into that, but the movement is pretty sloppy even if it is pretty damn robust which means that you could get one that runs +/- 6 seconds a day, or one that runs at +/- 60.
The upside is that the movement is really robust for it's design and price, they're a great way to get into modding and servicing watches, and parts are cheap as hell. For example, if you somehow fuck up the movement when you're installing a new dial, you can just buy a complete movement for like $30.
They're pretty much the Slav equivalent of Seiko 5s now that I think about it.
>>
>>62137342
Rado is known for ceramic watches.
>>
>>62137414
Brass is a pretty soft metal, which means that it gets dinged and scratched easier than something such as steel. Plated brass is also god awful and will always look like shit in under a year. Look at those old Pobeda and Raketas for example; a lot of them would look instantly better if they had stainless cases instead of alloy plated brass ones.
>>
>>62137414
>The Mohs Scale of Hardness for Metals

Here is a list of the hardness grades for some of the metals that you are most likely to come across in your everyday life, especially when dealing with jewelry:

Lead: 1.5
Tin: 1.5
Zinc: 2.5
Gold: 2.5-3
Silver: 2.5-3
Aluminum: 2.5-3
Copper: 3
Brass: 3
Bronze: 3
Nickel: 4
Platinum: 4-4.5
Steel: 4-4.5
Iron: 4.5
Palladium: 4.75
Rhodium: 6
Titanium: 6
Hardened steel: 7-8
Tungsten: 7.5
Tungsten carbide: 8.5-9

Brass isn't really hard, and it's not really durable enough for things like watch cases. It is, however, low friction, so you'll often see parts of watch movements fashioned from brass, especially in a brass/steel or brass/jewel interface.

You two can keep samefagging it every thread but 36mm is not a male sized watch in 2017. Unless you have complete bitch wrists. It doesn't give you "class" either. GB2 Reddit.

Nothing is wrong with 36mm watches. There is something wrong with insisting that small watches are inherently better because of their size.

Dive watches should fit your wrist but be larger than dress watches. If 35mm dress watches look good on men over 6 feet tall with 7.5 inch wrists then they should move up to 40mm dive watches. You faggots are throwing 45mm turtles on and they actually overhang your wrists and you say its fine and call people wristlets. Even if it doesn't literally hang over the sides of your wrist that does not mean it looks good or is the correct size for your wrist. And assuming your are not the extraordinarily small percentage of the population with wrists that are larger than 8 inches you really have no excuse but instead have poor taste.
>>
daily reminder that every watch is a fashion item first, and tool second
dive watches and pilot watches are no exception, they are vestigial instruments meant to evoke images of the past, and are 100% fashion items
muh legibility of the dial at arms length 200m below the surface of the water is NO excuse to wear a fuckhuge 46mm panerai memepiece that hangs over the sides of your wrist like a cantilevered bridge

It's fine. It's essentially the cheapest new automatic watch you can buy. They're durable and have a huge modding community. Don't expect to win any originality points or street cred with one. They're somewhat small (38mm), so if you have large wrists it might look a bit weird. There's literally dozens and dozens of styles, so check out which one you want (http://www.watchsleuth.com/seiko5finder/). They're essentially everyone's first mechanical watch.

>>62140059
It's like the default cheap mechanical alongside the Vostok Amphibia. If you're getting a watch that'll get banged around a lot, or is around magnetic fields, then look into getting a quartz.

Yes it is, because that was the design of the watch in the first place. What is with this small watch meme? This is fine. It's bordering on too big, but it's fine. When you're taking an up close shot of your wrist, it doesn't taken into account the entirety of the person. If it's your average person who's a manlet and doesn't work out, yeah it's going to look even WORSE.

Pic related is absolutely bad and is too big.

I've got one Lord Quartz, the movement and case code on the dial are slightly different from what's on the caseback (7143-7040 on the dial, 7143-7030 on the caseback), so I'm not sure if the caseback is original, or if they simple used the same caseback for several models in that line.
>>
>>62141691
Dial codes and case codes are not the same on Seikos, as the same case was used with multiple dials, and the same dial could be used in multiple cases in the same line of watches.

Just finished servicing my Voscuck Shitfibia 2416bumboi. It was only three years old, but this was the first watch I bought when I got into watches, even before I became a qualified watch repairer. So naturally I smudged and dirtied everything up while modding it, and looks like I must have damaged the hairspring before, so it was already time for a cleaning.

It went from running like shit at 180° to bretty gud accuracy, roughly +10s/-3s, with .1ms on the timegrapher, with 300° amplitude. Also reinstalled the second dial instead of the third that had a horrendous lume job by me.

The SKX is a bit of a special case in my eyes. It's an ISO certified dive watch. What's the cheapest hacking, handwinding ISO certified dive watch? My guess is that the answer to that question will be several other Seiko models before you get to a non-Seiko made watch.

I believe the SKX continues to use the 7s26 to keep it the cheapest ISO certified dive watch on the market.

Note that this isn't a defence of Seiko using the 7s26 in any other non-Seiko 5 model, which I think is silly at this point.
>>
>>62149046
seiko is making the 4r36 for maybe a penny more than the 7s26 stop defending them. The skx could sell for the same price with the hacking hand winding movement.

Once it touches the dial of a Vostok the resin of the lume melts the dial paint under it, so once you go at it there's no turning back, and no way to correct a fuck up. Luckily Vostok dials are dirt cheap. Probably because the paint is so shit.

I had better luck with an old enamel pocket watch dial. By this time I had also figured out the proper thickness of the lume.

Who cares about ISO certification? There's numerous 200m dive watches at that bracket, paying for certification costs doesn't make a superior watch. If you sincerely think that one 200m diver made by a major manufacturer is going to fail while another 200m diver will succeed, you're a moron. Also, Casio doesn't double the price of a DW5600 to certify it as a quartz chronometer like Breitling does, even though it would certainly pass. Certification means very, very little.

That guy's NY0040 earlier in the thread, despite being ugly as sin, came out in fucking 1996 and still handwinds, and it was actually used by military forces, albeit spaghetti ones. I'd take that over ISO certification every day.
>>
>>62149199
I was talking specifically about ISO certified dive watches, of which the SKX is one of the cheapest on the market, and the only other watch even close in price with ISO certification is the Citizen NY0040, which doesn't have hacking either.

Seiko sells the SKX at $200, and sells 4r36 powered ISO certified dive watches from $230. No one else sells an ISO certified mechanical dive watch with hacking and hand winding for less than $230 so fuck right off.
>>
>>62149537
You do realize actual scuba divers use wrist-mounted dive computers, and have done so since the 80s, right? Nobody gives a shit about ISO certification, except you, apparently.
>>
>>62149520
>I'd take that over ISO certification every day
It's already well established that you are a fucking moron who doesn't understand the difference between pretend dive watches and individually tested ISO certified real dive watches:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diving_watch#ISO_6425_standard_for_diving_watches
>The standards for diving watches are regulated by the ISO 6425 international standard. The watches are tested in static or still water under 125% of the rated (water) pressure, thus a watch with a 200 m rating will be water resistant if it is stationary and under 250 m of static water. The testing of the water resistance is fundamentally different from non-dive watches, because every watch has to be fully tested.

http://www.hautetime.com/iso-6245-divers-watch/83717/
>ISO 6425 does require that each watch is tested to 125% of its depth rating prior to being sold, so there is quite a safety margin in this."

http://ticktickticktick.com/buying-guides/how-to-choose-a-dive-watch/
>Water resistance to a minimum of 200 meters depth is generally recommended. In order to meet this depth rating, a dive watch has to meet ISO-6425 specifications, which is a certified international standard for compliant dive watches. Each watch has to withstand a pressure rating that is 25% higher than their stated depth, meaning the dive watch has to pass a lab test simulating 250 meters if it is stated be 200m by the manufacturer.
>>
>>62149537
you did not even respond to the point made in the comment. Seiko can sell it for the 200 dollars with the r4r36. you have no argument. why are you defending seiko?
>>
>>62149577
You do realize no testing is done to the individual watches, right? So, by the ISO criteria, which of these does the NY0040 not fit? What about the Orient Ray? Or that dude's shitter Invicta?

1. A rotating bezel that specifically allows divers to track the total time elapsed under water from the beginning of their dive

2. Luminescent features on the dial and hands that allow for easy readability underwater

3. A screw-down crown that keeps water from entering the watch

4. A case made of water-resistant materials that protect the watch from corrosion and rusting

6. A movement that has both shock resistance and magnetic resistance

7. A minimum water resistance of 100 meters (330 ft)

Yes, we can see that you're capable of googling the specifications. That doesn't mean you understand their implications.

>Rolex, the No.1 luxury watchmaker in the world, never bothers with the ISO 6425 requirements. You wouldn’t see a single line about ISO standard on their advertisements, since people know what they should expect from Rolex, their brand reputation does all the talking! Their classic dive watch, the Rolex Submariner, had already earned the trust of pro-divers long before the ISO 6425 was born.

http://www.donatwald.com/does-a-true-dive-watch-need-iso-6425-certification/

>It is the testing of each and every watch that makes it that many watch manufacturers do not sell their watches as ISO 6425 certified, as it can be cumbersome, expensive and don’t always add anything. Rolex never claimed that their watches meet ISO 6425 requirements, yet the Submariner and Sea-Dweller have been the watch of choice of professional divers for decades.

Also a note to Vostok owners. I looked at the date complication and you only have to turn the hands back to before 9PM for the rapid date change finger (marked 7 on pic) to move back behind a tooth on the date wheel and reset the mechanism. You can see the date wheel through the dial window jump a little when that happens.

Also you can immediately start turning the hands back right after the date jumped at midnight, no need to go to 2am or some shit as it's recommended on the Internet.

My entire argument and point was only that its annoying seiko doesnt put the 4r36 in the skx as it would only cost them an additional few cents to do; some seiko cuck comes in saying i am an asshole and its still a great deal at 200 dollars.

Russian watches, and cobbled together knockoffs of such from former easternblock countries.
Amphibia is a steel dive watch; many other russian watches are brass plated with chrome, like the Amphibia's non-diving cousin model, the Komandirskie.

The current Daytona has arguably the greatest automatic chronograph movement ever made. Obivously shit by Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, etc. might be "fancier"in terms of finishing, but it's unlikely they're going to be more accurate than the +/-2 seconds a day standard on the Daytona, and they sure as fuck aren't going to beat it's reliability.

The Omega 1861 is very good too of course, and has durability on par with the Rolex, but the downside is going to be it's slower beat rate, cam-actuated chronograph, and non-COSC standards (although you can get it up to COSC standards). Modern Omega is shit though, I would buy a pre-Swatch one honestly.

I believe the Speedy Pro is still a completely pre-Swatch design, and therefore the only non-shit current Omega. Swatch can't touch the design or else they lose the NASA spaceflight certification and all the marketingbucks that come with it, since NASA can't be assed to re-evaluate a new design for EVA use, because no one actually wears watches on spacewalks apart from a few autistic Russians.

NASA already flat-out rejected the original Mark II Speedmaster (a watch that Omega design specifically for space use) in 1970, because they couldn't care less as long as they had the good-enough Speedmasters for EVA's.

Seiko already sells multiple ISO certified dive watch models with the 4r36 for $230 and $275. Literally the whole point of the SKX having the 7s26 instead of the 4r36 is so that it can be cheaper than the $230 Seiko charges for 4r36 powered models.

Complaining about this when no one else but Citizen sells an ISO certified dive watch for less than $300 (which also doesn't hack) is absurd. Why don't you go complain to literally every other dive watch maker that they don't sell hacking and handwinding ISO certified divers for $200?

Well, it's definitely one of the greatest, but I'm not quite sure I'd put it at number 1. I guess it depends on how much emphasis one puts on the tool functionality of the chronograph mechanism vs. the timekeeping.

As a timekeeper, it's probably better than the Zenith El Primero, but as a purely functional tool chronograph the Lemania 5100 has a directly driven chronograph hand with far more shock and g-force resistance than any other chronograph movement ever made (as far as I know).

Nope.

>ISO Testing
>Testing standards dictate that a watch undergoes several pressure tests to ensure that the case, crown, and crystal are properly water-resistant and can withstand plenty of pressure. A watch that conforms to ISO Standards is marked with the word DIVER’S to distinguish it from other water-resistant watches. An important thing to note: ISO doesn’t actually certify or test watches themselves. Which means that you’re going off the watch company’s word when it comes to an ISO-standard watch.

Again, the ISO is not a testing body a la COSC. It merely defines a set of standards to which companies can choose to adhere. Testing is done by the company, and is not public. If you knew anything about dive watches, you'd know this.

Did you know the building your in isn't tested by ISO (or w/e standard your engineers use) either? ISO make standards and keep them up to date. That's all they do they never test the end products for any of their standards.
You should read up a bit on self regulation, how it works, what the aim of it is and why it's important.
>>
>>62153583
Indeed, which is why it's ridiculous to think that ISO certification means anything in a dive watch from a reputable brand, when the individual watches are tested only by the manufacturer.

Hence, Rolex and Omega don't bother listing "ISO 6425 Certified" on their watches, because it would be akin to Mercedes bragging about having seatbelts and airbags. The specs for ISO certification are very lax, and the durability of one 200m "ISO certified" diver is not going to differ greatly from another 200m diver, ceteris paribus.

As the article above stated: "So it’s very likely (even guaranteed) that you have plenty of dive-worthy watches out there that perform just fine without the ISO stamp of approval.".
>>
>>62152661
Glad to hear it.
>>
>>62153714
Rolex specifically is a different beast. They are the standard that the ISO standard is based on. It would be a step back/down to only be ISO Spec.
And I'm not arguing with You, personally I feel the cheap ISO way he's kind of killed what it meant by showing that the standard cab be met so cheaply that within Seiko /and decent brand every diver can pretty much be expected to pass.
It makes me wonder if on the little instruction book info shit there is a little bit saying the meet the standard and they just don't advertise it because it does mean next to nothing.

And how many "reputable brands" are selling diver shaped watches for less than $500 that you would trust to actually be usable as dive watches without ISO certification or having the watch pressure tested yourself post purchase?

The whole goddamn point of ISO certification on affordable dive watches is to signify that each and every one has been pressure tested by the manufacturer.
>>
>>62153022
>The SKX looks a lot better than the monster and they increased the price by a few pennies and put a better movement in it that would not be a bad thing would it?
I'd be happy if they switched to the 4R36 for the SKX, but they would definitely raise the price to match the Monster if they did. I don't care, hell I spent twice the price of an SKX on mine so I could have a 6r15 and sapphire crystal put in as well as buying a StrapCode super oyster bracelet.

Ideally, it would be better if they made another cheap diver model to slap the 7s26 into and sell for $200 so there was a $200 ISO certified dive watch option from them.

It would be even better if any other watchmaker offered an ISO certified mechanical dive watch for less than $300 with hacking and handwinding, but unfortunately, none of them do.
