I'm having trouble understanding why someone would use Linux.
So you install Windows and everything just works. I hear this argument here all the time saying "windows users are retarded" because they have everything done for them already. But isn't that a point to actually use it? You aren't a computer, so let a computer do it for you. Isn't that much smarter?
Whereas you download even the easiest distro which is Ubuntu, and you need to do all these sudo commands or apt just to a) get something to work b) install software.
Boot times are incredibly slow. I've went from roughly a minute to 3 second migrating from Debian to Windows 8.1
Looks are entirely subjective, but I think this can pass as something that looks clean and organized.
There are also some handy features such as streaming from your PC to a smart TV which is incredibly useful.
It literally just works.

I already know there's a "learning curve" that comes with switching from Windows to Linux. The point was why start from scratch when there's already something polished and made for easy user use? It does the same thing because they're both computers in the end.
This guide will speed your system up 10X and is typed by a very trustworthy source
Here is a great help for starting linux. your settings are wrong you need to fully use your systems hardware linux by nature does not use the entire system. Start off with mint I did and it is a slight learning curve but my comp is sooo much faster and has less corp BS. try it out.
Start with linux MINT 18.2 is good
Use this guide and follow all the sets post set up on Linux this increased by boot time to almost instant! I am now a happily fully converted Linux user.
This is by far the fastest and best system I have ever set up and ive tired linux a few times.
follow this guide and really engross your self in learning it. i was shocked at first too then realized my full ram was not being used, my bios were out of date and my libra office was using java shut that off to make it almost instant
check this guide out
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/firstmint
linux runs off minimal stuff so tell it to use different graphics card etc. and you will be amazed. before I followed the guide above I once though as you did

one, yes, stay at windows and shut the fuck up, we don't want you.
two, saged.
when I was a noob I did not understand mint 18.2 is the same as ubuntu 16.4
the reason linux does not come polished out is it would be illegal with some of the plug ins. just like bit torrent does not come with torrents. some of the plug ins like flash people want to charge for so they can not include them
the guide above will work for your 16.4 system as well

More than 1 GB memory (RAM): tame the inode cache
1.2. Computers with more than 1 GB of memory (RAM), will probably benefit by shrinking the inode cache less aggressively.
The price that you pay for this, is that certain system items will remain longer in the RAM memory, which decreases the amount of available RAM for general tasks. That's why this tweak is only useful for computers with more than 1 GB of memory (RAM).
This is how you do it:
a. Type in the terminal (use copy/paste):
gksudo xed /etc/sysctl.conf
Press Enter.
Now a text file opens. Scroll to the bottom of that text file and add your swappiness and cache parameters to override the defaults, so copy/paste the following two green lines:
# Improve cache management
vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50
d. Close the text file and reboot your computer.

You were doing something wrong then. Almost all complaints about linux are from people who don't know what they're doing.
Windows "just werk" is real, you don't have to put any effort to make your system work with your computer, if you buy a laptop you only need to unistall bloatware and you're done.

package managers like apt are actually extremely comfy, let me tell you why
So how do you install stuff on windows? Open browser, search for program, download program and execute the installer. Phew so many steps and now it bothers you with adds and wants to install some shitty crap or make bing your standard serach engine, who wants to deal with this crap?
Now Ubuntu (or any other distro). Open terminal, type "sudo apt install nameofprogram" and you're done.
On top of that updating is "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" which you execute when you feel the need to. Windows always bothers you about it. Starting firefox? Oh updates availiabe, install now? Or even worse with system updates..
There are many more reasons like this that make Linux more comfy. Obviously Linux isn't perfect but it's pretty great.
>>62135114
>something polished and made for easy user use
That's pretty subjective, son. Let's face it, most Linux users have specific wants or needs from Linux. The fact that they acknowledge this and seek out Linux, is a good indicator that they may be either, exceptionally inquisitive, or already an advanced computer user. I.E. Windows is dumb and boring.

Windows 10 and Ubuntu boot at about the same speed for me. The main difference is that Ubuntu is at full performance as soon as it gets to the login screen, whereas Windows takes 5 minutes to get ready.
>So you install Windows and everything just works. I hear this argument here all the time saying "windows users are retarded" because they have everything done for them already.
It doesn't "just work", you're just used to everything in it that's broken and annoying because Windows is so ubiquitous that you don't really know the difference.
On easy mode distros, clicky button UIs are available to handle all of the software upgrades. On Windows you need to fuck around in Powershell just to get a package manager at all, and having five different vendors' update services running at once is not efficient.
>>62138184
Windows doesn't force a restart unless you ignore an update for several weeks, at which point you deserve to be forcibly updated. Retards who think they don't need updates are the reason we get some worm that shits on millions of computers every few years.

If you don't have control over the technology you use, you're more animal than human. You can't have control over the technology you use if you don't understand what it's doing let alone know what it's doing. Windows is a botnet made for lazy, low-IQ consumers who lack curiosity. And it doesn't just work--it hardly works at all. It's the equivalent of a dozen unrelated pieces of software duct-taped together.
>>62137985
For the record, Windows does have a 3rd party package manager but only for 3rd party software you choose (that means no system updates), and it's pretty shitty unless you pay, and even then you're limited to certain subset of softwares.
I'm talking about Chocolotay or whatever.
Package management such as apt or pacman are miles better, however I prefer Flatpak, as it is distro-independant, and sandboxied.

Kde is not Linux
I've been down both roads. I started browsing /g/, installed Arch, thought I liked it and ended up discarding it. It's a timesink distro, I had to configure fucking everything. And after everything was configured, if I wanted to install something new I had to configure it too, if it worked. Updates breaking the OS meme wasn't really true, until the first time it broke my OS. Then I just decided to go with Xubuntu.
Xubuntu was a lot better with pretty much everything. Didn't have to use unstable packages from AUR, Ubuntu's own repos are much larger than Arch's and overall 17.04 was comfy as fuck. It didn't require as much fiddling as Arch, but always a little given that it's Linux. I tolerated a lot of it but eventually I got tired of always having to fiddle with shit. Nothing works out of the box even with the easiest of Linuxes. I got fed up when I tried to update the system and a partition was too small for the update to go through. I had to look up what exactly was preventing it because it doesn't state it clearly in the console. So I went back to Windows 10, and I don't regret it.
With Windows, everything just works. There's no fiddling with some fucking config file, there are no bugs, there's no poor support for current hardware. It's what I wanted after all, after thinking I didn't. I don't like the idea of using Microshit but honestly after coming home from work the last thing I want to do is face more and more problems instead of relaxing. If the price I have to pay for this convenience is that some of my activity gets logged on some server or used as anonymous data, so be it. Nobody cares who I am anyway. Even if they had video of me jacking to trannies and had malicious intent, I don't think people would give a shit, because I don't really know anyone. And I don't have a mic or camera connected to my computer so that just makes the thought even more distant.
If Linux wants more users, they need to streamline it even further.
>>62139103
What did you need to configure with Linux? Especially one like *buntu, since once you set something it stays that way. I've been running Linux for years. After setting up Arch, I hardly had to do anything. It was completely stable and light on resources. I have also tried Ubuntu and Mint. Both were exceptionally stable and I did not experience any trouble.
Prior to that I used Windows. It needed a fresh install every few months because it kept fucking up Explorer and crashing. It would run slow and hang every day. It bitched and whinged about needing updates all the time. And when I gave in and installed those updates, it fucked up every single thing I spent hours configuring. Debian Stable is *THE* "just works" OS. I've got it on my daily-driver. Installation took less than a half hour. After I was done, I had a full OS with a full software suite: web browser, torrent client, text editor, document viewer, office suite, etc..
If I ever want new software in Debian, I just let Synaptic download the stable version and all necessary software. If no stable version is available, I don't use it (I've only had this problem with Adobe Flash Player in Firefox so far -- a Chromium version is available so it's irrelevant). I check for updates myself and install them with just three buttons: "Reload", "Mark All Upgrades", "Apply".

>KDE is a desktop environment. Not Linux.
I'd just like to interject for a moment.
What you're referring to as KDE, is in fact, KDE Plasma, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Plasma shell. KDE is not a desktop environment unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Plasma desktop made useful by the KDE Frameworks, Applications and Qt libraries comprising a full DE.
Many computer users run a version of the Plasma desktop every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Plasma which is widely used today is often called KDE, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Plasma desktop, developed by the KDE project.
There really is a KDE, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. KDE are the frameworks: the libraries in the system that provide UI and desktop functions to the other programs that you run. The framework is an essential part of a desktop environment, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete desktop environment. KDE Applications are normally used in combination with the Plasma desktop shell: the whole desktop environment is basically the Plasma shell that makes use of the KDE Frameworks. The so-called KDE desktop environment is really Plasma desktop shell.
