I had gentoo.

Its the same as ordering a house off IKEA or some shit, getting each piece individually, manually building the entire fucking house, only to find out it never came with plumbing or electrical wiring. So you go to the hardware store and tell the guy what you need and instead of fetching your request, he stares at his clipboard as sweat profusely runs down his face. You start wondering whats wrong and then he REEEEEEEEEEEEEs all over you. His clipboard? A goddamn header file. Now imagine going to furnish that house except you can only buy one piece of furniture and each piece of furniture you buy you get the same guy going REEEEEEEEEEE and throwing his shit all over you.

Gentoo is for people who have too much time on their hands and would rather submit themselves to fixing their OS instead of actually doing something.

I installed it on my laptop, same with Gentoo. Desktop is running wangblows until I build a new one.

Alpine is pretty neat. It's small and lightweight. But unless you have reasons to avoid glibc, I wouldn't outright recommend it. It doesn't install man pages by default; you have to install <package>-doc to get them. There also still some packages that just do not play nice with musl, though the ones I ran into weren't things I really needed or even wanted, but might have started using for college in a few weeks, such as CodeBlocks. I also found when trying to run iroffer on a server with Alpine installed that strftime always sets errno to 22 in musl. I don't think this is normally an issue but it broke iroffer's auto-removal of deleted/lost packages.

I actually had a bit of trouble getting it installed on my laptop because I was installing it on an NVMe drive, and it was a bit of a pain to figure out how to get that working. With all that said, I like it, but I don't think I can recommend it just yet.

Still love Ubuntu, would like to try Arch but honestly I'm happy where I am.
>>
I started on Ubuntu, stood there for like three months, got to six months on Arch, and am now on Debian for the last two months.

Soon enough I'll be back to Ubuntu. It just works.

I still wanna try Gentoo, tho. But I'm not sure if it's worth it to use it as my main distro, but I think that if I do it on a side-laptop I just won't take it seriously enough.

KDE Neon.

Kinda considering openSUSE Leap again.

Moved to Ubuntu 16.04 from Arch for mining crypto. Works well - set it and forget it and heavily supported. My main computer since I started mining is a cheapo $20 dell mini running Gentoo. Love it. Threw Gentoo on an old thinkpad as well but the hdd died while emerging xorg :^(

Ubuntu LTS. Ugly as shit, but gets the job done.

On a Thinkpad. Can't get hw speakers or bluetooth speakers to work. Also awful screen tearing. Webcam doesn't work either. And everything with gui is so unintuitive that bow I understand why linux users prefer terminal so often.

Why didn't I stick to windows.

Stupid question: I'm considering using KDE Neon but there's one thing that stops me from installing it. Because Neon's based on Kubuntu, does it have that privacy issue on Ubuntu (amazon search)? I know this privacy issue got pretty old now but I still can't trust Ubuntu.

In my experience, Mint, alongside Xubuntu, has the best out-of-the-box compatibility with most hardware.

Unlike what appears to be the majority of Linux users on /g/ I actually need an OS that will operate without weekly maintenance.

And while Debian boasts very good stability, it doesn't offer the same variety of current hardware support due to its very slow update chain and conservative release schedule.

Sorry, I'm a normie. I need to be able to plug something in and it work.

debian testing with firmware-linux-nonfree is just as compatible as ubuntu. the only cool thing i've ever liked that was unique to ubuntu was that it install both noveau and nvidia proprietary side by side and has a gui to switch between them. this isn't enough of a reason for me to put up with all the things i don't like about *buntus though. i've used every ubuntu flavor and none of them are as solid as debian testing.

ubuntu minimal install provides no benefits over debian. plus you have to update your system twice a year if you want to use the current kernel. worthless.

Apparently not. I've just installed both Ubuntu and Testing /w non-free on my desktop for lulz. Deb has screen tearing out of the box. Only need to adjust a few conf. files but still, normies won't do that.
