It is unnecessarily complex. As I said, they have included the mechanism to flip the ticket to the right orientation, which takes up quite a lot of space compared to other turnstiles. And well, maybe there's other functions that I haven't discovered.

Was in Japan until yesterday. The Shinkansen Superexress is the best thing they have ever done. It's a shame the JR pass doesn't let you use the Nosomi and Mizuho.

Also used the EVA 500 which is an Evangelion themed Shinkansen between Osaka and Hakata.
>>
>>62126462
Multiple ticket formats, ability to process multiticket transactions where some come back and others are kept (say, base fare plus assigned seat upgrade, where the turnstile keeps the base fare ticket so you can't hand Tokyo-Hakata off inside the station to someone willing to accept standing room only who passed through the turnstile on a Tokyo-Shinagawa ticket.)

Some are magstripe. Some aren't. Some are large and can be inserted with 4 orientations, some are small and can be inserted with 8 orientations. Some need to be punched, and some need to be stamped. Some need to be shredded by the machine, and some need to be returned. This needs to work perfectly during rush hour with several thousand people per minute using a bank of turnstiles.
>>
>>62126761
Ticket format was redesigned and moved to near-full automation around when JR privatized, so I'm being charitable.
>>
>>62126763
>Some are magstripe. Some aren't. Some are large and can be inserted with 4 orientations, some are small and can be inserted with 8 orientations. Some need to be punched, and some need to be stamped. Some need to be shredded by the machine, and some need to be returned.
sounds like they've dug themselves a hole
>>
>>62125711
>there sould be signs saying hold on to your ticket.
Why would you hold onto your ticket? You have to put it through the machine.

>>62125733
That's not correct. I think that at 13~15 you are still in felony area for men, if you are a woman then at worst you'll just get a misdemeanor.
>>
>>62126783
Sure. A hole from which it's far easier to climb out by putting several linked ticket readers in the otherwise empty space of a turnstile railing, than to completely replace several railways' ticket printers and stock while dropping human readability/cancelability and requiring a fully modernized setup at every ridership: 100 rural platform.

>>

>>

Another misinterpretation.
>>
>>62125856

>>
>>62126828
By that definition, pedophilia is even more legal in the US. At least Japan has a national minimum lower than every prefecture's minimum, the US has no national minimum and only state minimums.

You're also missing the various contributing-to-delinquency laws, which basically work out to the same effect as same-age and marriage exceptions in the west.
>>
>>62125651
the one thing I miss most about japan was buying a $20 bottle of black label and getting slammed while wondering around the city. Plus I have a lot of piercings so I was considered by them to be super "badass" american.

found a hostel in kyoto that was like a luxery hotel for just $20 a night. You walk about aside and everything is right fucking there and it was so fucking amazing holy shit my poor stomach has never been so full before.

went to every fucking hentai/sex shop we could find in akihabara, didn't even get told to leave the men's only places cause baka ganjin. there is SO much fucking porn there, and it is all worth spending $$$ on instead of finding stuff online. It's more organized than a fucking library

>>
>>62127033
Fare+upgrade, transfer+fare, possibly transfer+fare+upgrade.

>>62127229
"Allowed" and "preferred" are different. Face blocking is a legal thing, scowling at the asshole foreigner with a selfie stick making 500 people miss their train is a politeness thing.
>>
>>62127241
Hong Kong uses a quite simple solution for this shit, you have to buy all the fare and upgrade you need at the ticket vending machine if you're using tickets, and no transfer discount for ticket users.
>>
>>62127291
Oh god. I'm from Hong Kong and MTR is a fucking wet dream, i wish there was a MTR-like system in the US.

Fucking take me back. I honestly hate daily live in the US because everything is so far apart from each other. Crossing the street takes 30 seconds because the streets are like 2x or 3x the size of an asian street.

I have to pay for gas and shit too. I loved the octopus card system where basically worked as a card for all daily purchases because even restaurants and grocery stores and department stores allow you to use your transportation money to buy other shit.

Another Japanese old technology, those metal badges and buttons are comfy as hell.
>>
>>62127060
Pretty sure that was made a few years back
>>
>>62127033
Japan has some kinda weird systems which I dunno if I could fully explain the reasons for, but in the case of Shinkansen in particular some stations have two sets of gates, local lines and then Shinkansen, so when you buy your Shinkansen ticket you may get two tickets and when you arrive at your destination (say Tokyo) it will eat your seat fare ticket for the Shinkansen and then you can walk onto a local train and get off at the local station with the final ticket.
Because that final ticket is part of your trip fare it gets checked through.
>>
>>62127291
Having to buy fare+upgrade at once is worse for setups like Japan's where long-distance express and local service run on the same lines, and transfers are unavoidable for some long-distance service across multiple operators and because base JR pricing (even though JR is actually multiple separate companies) are by distance band. HK's solution works for HK's size with a single operator, but in Japan it would have been a politically untenable near-doubling of long distance service prices as part and parcel of JR's privatization and splitting.

>>
>>62128021
Honestly, I haven't seen many, if any, Japanese people using iPhones (or Apple Watch for that matter) to pay at stations.

It's kinda hard to be sure though, most of the time they use cellphone cases that have space for IC cards in them, so they could just have an IC card in the case when they swipe it over the turnstile instead of using the phone's ability.
>>
>>62128182
Not looking hard enough if you've never seen people tapping their phones on a ticket gate nfc thing.
>>
>>62128222
I have seen people tapping their phones, but I covered that.

Remember also that to use Suica with Apple Pay you need to have a credit card, which a lot of Japanese people don't have, while with mobile Suica it can just be put onto their phone bill.

Let me guess. The law basically says that a 13 year old is allowed to fuck someone up to a certain age, like 15, right? But as soon as the person is above the age limit it becomes illegal (like a 13 and 17 year old). Because thats a similar system to what the Germans/Austrians have.
>>
>>62128664
Actually means to respond to this guy >>62126282
>>
>>62128664
It's mostly misinterpreted because everywhere in the country has a more regional sex age that is older than the 13 year old national one. So it's not "wrong" to say the age of consent is 13, but it's wrong in the sense that the age is actually older everywhere in the country.
>>
>>62128691
So a 20 year old actually is allowed to fuck a 13 year old?
>>
>>62128701
*assuming theres some place that doesnt have an adjusted age.

Whats the lowest to YOUR knowledge?
>>
>>62128701
No it's like federal law say 13yo are ok but every single state have +15yo laws, it's technically correct but not really.
>>
>>62128701
It pretty much every place in Japan it is a felony for a 20yo man to have sex with a 13yo girl.

It's only a misdemeanor if a 20yo woman has sex with a 13yo boy though.
>>
>>62128746
>>62128751
Yea I specified my question here >>62128713, my bad. So 15 is the lowest you know of, thats intersting.
>>
>>62128701
Most likely no.

Some places have laws that prohibit sex with anyone under 18. Other places may allow it under circumstances like if it's a consenting relationship and the parents are okay with it.

Basically it is possible for it to be legally acceptable but the laws are open enough to allow the police to go after anyone they want for such weird relationships.

It's also basically irrelevant because no one over 20 is going to be in a legit romantic relationship with someone that young. The only time these laws come into play is in like actual pedophilia or child prostitution cases, in which case the people are definitely going to get prosecuted.

In summary, the "japan age of consent is 13" thing is nonsense.
>>
>>62126704
>Japan is what I consider the ideal country to live in.
Then move there and be prepared to get disappointed, you clueless weeb child.

>>
>>62128860
While I agree with your first comment (living in Japan is complete fucking aids unless you have enough money so you dont have to work a single day in your life and can simply enjoy the country, without having to bother with worklife), I completely disagree that there are countries with an equal level of public transportation. I have been to Japan about half a dozen times now and can say that their trains are more punctual and efficient than anything else I have ever witnessed. And I am from Germany, which is regarded as another contender for that title (I believe). I've also been to plenty of other European nations and Japan schools all of them in that regard. So unless Korea or Singapoore (which are the only "countries" I can think of that could potentially have a better one) do a better job, I dont see anyone who is able to surpass them in that regard.

Last time I went to Japan in 2014 they were starting to make all of them interoperable and let you use any one anywhere in Japan.
Did they stop? Why are people arguing? Have I been memed?
>>

>>
>>62130167
They're inter-operable for the trains, usually. What you buy still changes depending on where you are, and not all of them are used for the same services outside of train stations.
>>
>>62129374
What's with the weird blend of both English and Japanese?
>>
>>62130271
Kansai Airport is an International Airport, so it kinda makes sense to have it in English as well so that the person who bought the ticket will know. Perhaps if you select English on the machine it prints in English as well (same with any other languages the machine supports).

In Japanese so station staff will understand too. It certainly isn't common for tickets to be printed in both though.

They are all inter-operable on JR services.
Most other major lines and buses support all of them.
Some smaller local lines and bus services will support local IC cards only.

Now, anywhere that accepts one of the major IC cards accepts all the other major IC cards.

Icoca is still the best because of the name.

I miss using my PASMO, I'm sad every time I have to use public transportation in my country, Japan was just so good and efficient.

Trying to get a ticket in japan:
>approach machine
>press recharge
>insert card
>insert money
>done

Trying to get a ticket in Italy:
>approach machine
>loud BE WARY OF PICKPOCKETS message that can't be skipped
>type destination station on the unresponsive on-screen keyboard
>pick train
>DO YOU WANT TO DONATE TO CHARITY?
>no fuck off
>THIS TRAIN DEPARTS IN A FEW MINUTES ARE YOU REALLY SURE?
>yes
>PLEASE PAY
>machine accepts no paper money or coins but it looks exactly the same as the one that does
>switch to the correct machine
>BE WARY OF PICKPOCKETS
>get through the menu again
>PRINTING......
>ticket gets stuck
>need to insert your arm in the machine to retrieve it
>get to the train platform
>train already left
>can't use the ticket on another train

I miss Japan

I happen to be an expert on all trains worldwide.

Japan's turnstiles system is infamously complex. Japan has 150+ prefecture/municipal/regional/JR train companies. In the 50s, as "Motha" JR started to use turnstiles, all these companies also started their own implementation.

By the 80s, with the amount of commuters from the economic boom, the clusterfuck of systems were deemed unoperatable.

At the same time, Japan started to push for "Zero-Obstacle" campaign (for the elderly and blinds). So all the train companies were forced to start to integrate their shit ticketing systems together.

By the early 2000s, the integration was more or less completed (at the very least, the turnstile would at least return your ticket if the turnstile couldn't handle it.) Then JR went and did PAssmo and Tokyo Metro implemented Isuca, and all hell break lose again. It wasn't until ~2014 that both systems are interopreatable. Thank god.

I was in Japan again this April, and half the ads on trains were a series of ads for JR+Apple about how you can finally use Apple Pay on trains and surrounding stores. So yeah, Japan is pretty behind on the NFC front.

If this thread is still up by end of day, I will go back home and dig up some photos of early Japanese train turnstiles from my files.

PS. It's mesmerizing how efficient a Japanese turnstile is at handling morning rush hour traffic. Your normal 3 spokes turnstiles in Europe/HK are glacial in comparison.
>>
>>62126414
underrated post, really gave me flashbacks
>>
>>62134567
Eh, just remember HK replaced the spokes turnstiles with the 2 slides one. Still, I could count, with 2 hands, the number of times the folks in front of me at a queue at a HK train turnstile got into trouble with the machine.

People in Japan do not stop when walking through turnstile because Felica is so fast.

S. Korea, which uses Mifare, had multiple upgrades on the receivers, but people still have to stop for half a sec for the reader to beep.

Other places with Mifare are even slower, of course.

The Tokyo Metro was fantastic. I love the information screens that tell you exactly where you are in the train and where the exits will be (WebM related, took this on a Ginza line train). So much better than the London Underground that I use daily. Also

I wasted about ¥5,000 worth of credit because of that.

The Shinkansen is also nice but I thought it would be faster, also the Tohoku Shinkansen trains are ugly as fuck.

The Yurikamome in Tokyo is fucking cool, I'd definitely recommend riding it end-to-end just to see all the cool shit and go over the bridge (get on at Shimbashi and ride to Toyosu and back). It runs on rubber wheels along a guided track.

Japan occasionally uses similar ones, generally at small stations.

They can also set them up on the fly. On Sunday there was an airshow in my area, the station which usually handles maybe tens people getting on and off trains had thousands of people waiting to get on, so they opened up a gate beside the station and positioned one of those readers next to it for people getting off the trains and people going on the trains heading east (shorter distance, less people).

The ones in Paris are probably the most elaborate and intricate I saw, can't find a picture, but it's largely more complex than this. Nip ones are smalltime.

Paris here.
It's way simpler than the japanese ones. You can either use a NFC card or a standard paper ticket, no other options available.

the Paris train system is actually loved by tourists ; the same ticket can get to to the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower or Champs Elysees without a problem. Remember that in Japan, different train lines belong to different companies, with different tickets, fares and systems (going from A to B through C is not the same price/ticket than going through D, for example).

But this is /n/ territory.

I know, I just went offtopic but ours still are simpler inside than the behemoths from Japan.

Actually, the guts of the ticket gates here in Paris look like they are from the 80s/90s and never evolved. Even the PCBs are large and simple.

Hes not wrong. The thing is if you know that you won't be accepted among 95% of Japanese society and understand that well enough to go about things and find happiness for yourself, you should be fine. Some people go there with this disillusion of "Oh man I practiced my Japanese and now I'm at JPLT N5" like it wont matter. The work life there is still 10 hours on average, your commitment to a company is 10 years at least, you'll never be fully accepted among the civilians there just because you don't look Japanese, and a bunch of other nonsense that we call being xenophobic. If you can accept all that then you can enjoy Japan for yourself and find happiness and hopefully share it with someone you'd call your Significant Other.
>>
>>62148766
is it really /that/ crowded?
Also what about buses?
>>
>>62148822
It's not just looking japanese, anyone born outside of japan will never be fully accepted either.

No, it really is cancer.

You didn't see the competition.
You instantly get in the top bracket if nobody died using your system in the last 5 years.
Honestly we really need to address these things as we can do so much better.

I don't see your problem, just buy the ticket you need, no shit it will only work for the exact thing you bought and won't be compatible with anything else.
The counter thing is at most annoying, anyway you can buy online and print it yourself so I never had to actually experience it.

Hate to break it to you, but East Asian tourists do that shit all the time in London, even moreso than other races. Tourists are invariably scum. If you have to be a tourist, go somewhere irrelevant like Spain where nobody cares what the natives think.

To keep this on topic, let's have a look at what the UK rail system would be using if our government wasn't hopelessly shit at everything.

Literally how? They always travel in packs and giggle at everything while speaking Asianese.

By acting like an overconfident shit. If you're attractive, just approach them and make small talk while hinting at any plans for tonight - let me show you the best part of london and me - but don't be quiet/shy about it. I'm bad at conceptualizing people already, so when I see cute asians I don't really see humans but really cute sex toys that I really want to fuck and snuggle with and that just boosts my fake confidence even more.
>>
>>62125856
Could it be simpler? Ya, but the benefits of keeping it mechanicly complex? You get people working; creating the components, repariing, installing, etc. Japan also has a large industry based on the automation sector, so it isn't probably a big cost to keep this kind of system running smoothly. Export your automation tech around the world and keep your people employed.

reminds me about the guy who made the documentary' japan, a story of love and hate', or a title something along those lines. he'd been there for like 3 years for the bbc but didn't really do shit at all to learn the language or culture, then proceeds to shittalk the land for an hour and a half even tho he knows nothing. he gets laughed at late in the doc by using 'konnichiwa' at night time. really shitty film.

so if you're doing anything at all to understand the language you're doing better than most gaijin.

To be fair to him, the Japanese don't really have a set rule for when they change over from konnichiwa to konbanwa. I have heard some saying konnichiwa when I thought it was past time to change and konbanwa when it's only around 5.30pm and not even dark yet.

So unless it was like 10pm or something he was probably fine.

>And Z3+ and Z5 are shit tier phone since they use 810 and they fucking overheat when you use it.
I have the z3+/ Z4, I agree that the over heating is a minor issue. Phone gets pretty hot whenever its plugged in and watching YouTube videos, or playing some graphics intensive game

but I like everything else about the phone desu. And I will probably get a sony phone again when it's time to upgrade. I was debating between the Z5 and X performance, but looking now, the XZ price seems to fairly similar
