I've recently installed Arch on a Thinkpad. I've enabled natural scrolling just fine, and tap-to-click, but I feel like the trackpad is too sensitive to taps (i.e. I'll be scrolling and suddenly the machine thinks I right-clicked.) Is there some setting I can mess around with to change sensitivity?

Just
systemctl list-unit-files fstrim*
and make sure there's a fstrim job of some sort enabled. That's pretty much all you have to do ever for SSDs.

You can enable continuous trim by mounting SSD filesystems
-o drop
, but that can also cause the drive to shit itself if its firmware isn't well tested on Linux, and it shouldn't be necessary unless you have a very write heavy 24/7 workload.

The Arch wiki has a good article about it IIRC.

Linux SUCKS. Why? Because:

1) Command lines/Lack of GUI's

Why the fvck would I want to use a command line? I have a modern computer, capable of displaying color and icons. Why should their be a command line? And further, why doesn't everything have a gui? Gui's are good, and easy, and don't require me to learn commands. Yey for Gui's.

2)Root/sudo is stupid.

Why on earth should I have to deal with either using sudo or running as root to actually use my programs? I still can't get a lot of programs to run because they keep whining about permissions. What ever happened to good old admin accounts? Why does sudo break everything?

3)Apt-get

Now this is just plane stupid. Why is it so damn hard to install anything? I have a desktop, why not do it the way it should be done? I get the installer icon, click on it, press forward a few times, wait, and have a nice icon on my desktop. Why isn't it done this way?

4)Compiling

Again, stupid. Just give me a fvcking installer program. None of this compiling sh1t.

Come on Linux. The rest of the world has moved beyond 1990. It's time for you to do so also. I'm giving up and installing windows.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Anti-forkbomb:
ulimit -u <max number of allowed user processes>

With this you can just type the directory instead of cd directory:
shopt -s autocd

Extented pattern matching when globbing:
shopt -s extglob

Allows you to glob recursive into subdirectories via **:
shopt -s globstar

When you type:
ls ../somedir
vim benis
ls[up arrow]
it will expand to the last ls command, not the vim command, with nothing in the command line, it works like normal:
bind '"\e[A":history-search-backward'
bind '"\e[B":history-search-forward'

I've tried running dolphin as superuser by doing 'sudo dolphin' but I just get:

$ sudo dolphin

I just need to open it and edit the inode for firefox so it opens dolphin instead of nemo by default for file browsing.

Why can't I just right click and open the file as root? Or open it in whatever editor and toggle an 'edit as root' option or something?

This seems needlessly obtuse.
>>
>>62127281
Well, I installed and tried gedit, and I get this error:

sudo gedit
sudo: unable to resolve host memecrasher
No protocol specified
Failed to connect to Mir: Failed to connect to server socket: No such file or directory
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

Is there no simple GUI based method to actually open this file as root? Even the command line commands aren't working properly.
>>

you need to put the right directory for the file, if your terminal isn't in /usr/... whatever.
and you can set it up like that, but i suggest reading one of the many intro to loonix books available. or go back to whatever os you were using before if you don't want to learn the loonix ways.

Just searched the archives and people suggest just to encrypt hard drives so Win cant access them. Whatever, anon.
>>
>>62127945
If you are worried about a ransomware encrypting files that it can't read then making them harder to read isn't going to help because it would already be working at the block level. Ie not caring what it is encrypting, at that point encrypted bytes are no different than unencrypted. The only thing encryting you drive helps against is exfiltrating your data.
How about you use some critical thinking instead of just reading some shit and having no idea what it means.
>>
>>62127366
you can, but it is not used enough for people to have a right click menu for it.
Your system needs to know what editor you use, so in your ~/.bashrc, set export VISUAL=<insert editor>
Then make a script to launch it.

It may set the editor to gedit, then either opens it normally or opens it as root. (using kdesudo so it is graphical login, you can use something else if you want.
Then on dolphin, to make a menu for it, I made a file called
~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/edit_root.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Service
X-KDE-ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin
MimeType=text/*
Actions=EditAsRoot
X-KDE-AuthorizeAction=shell_access

[Desktop Action EditAsRoot]
Name=Edit As Root
TryExec=kdesudo
Exec=/path/to/script/edit.sh %u
Icon=folder-red

Then I can rightclick and edit as root.
You can tweak as you want

You can't encrypt a folder (directory), it's just a namespace for the files you place in it.
Short version: generate your gpg keys, encrypt your files setting yourself as the recipient using gpg, decrypt when you need the files.
Long version: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GnuPG

This method is a pain in the ass and you're much better off creating an encrypted volume like the other guy said. If you have no free space, use a loop device.

I just converted 2x2TB UFS disks to a 1x2TB ZFS mirror. Once the resilvering is done, is there anything else I need to do before I reboot?

Also, I didn't create any filesystems before moving my files onto the new ZFS system because having all of my data contained on a single disk was triggering the fuck out of me and I just wanted it over and done with. Once the system is back up and I start creating filesystems with stuff like compression and copies, can I just mv the data into its respective filesystem or do I have to cp the data then rm the original reference in order for the files to actually make use of the options I set?

>The end of Gentoo's hardened kernel Posted August 20, 2017
>Gentoo has long provided a hardened kernel package, but that is coming to an end. "As you may know the core of sys-kernel/hardened-sources has been the grsecurity patches. Recently the grsecurity developers have decided to limit access to these patches. As a result, the Gentoo Hardened team is unable to ensure a regular patching schedule and therefore the security of the users of these kernel sources. Thus, we will be masking hardened-sources on the 27th of August and will proceed to remove them from the package repository by the end of September."

>As you may know the core of sys-kernel/hardened-sources have been the grsecurity patches.
>Sadly, their developers have stopped making these patches freely available
>As a result, the Gentoo Hardened team is unable to keep providing further updates of the patches, and although the hardened-sources have proved (when using a hardened toolchain) being resistant against certain attacks like the stack guard page jump techniques proposed by Stack Clash, we can't ensure a regular patching schedule and therefore, the security of the users of these kernel sources.

I'm reinstalled the most current flash and it still isn't working. It was working last night.

how do I approach this? help pls
>>
>>62133460
0. find the guy responsible for making that shit requiring flash and kindly suggest suicide for him
1. go to adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
2. download the architecture appropriate tar.gz
3. exit firefox
4. go to ~/.mozilla/firefox/<your profile dir>/
5. create a directory called "plugins"
6. from the tar.gz extract the libflashplayer.so to that plugins directory
7. start firefox, it should have that flash plugin working
8. yes, this is a manual and bit annoying-to-do-every-single-time method but works everytime, unlike the flashplugins-installer package.

in firefox navigate to about:preferences->Content
click "advanced" set the fonts you want and uncheck "allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selection above"
the last step is important because otherwise most websites would just use their shit-tier fonts
>>

Open the dev console (ctrl+shift+i on firefox), use the element picker (leftmot tab of the console, icon without text) and then click on some text. The rightmost pane should change, in the "Filter Styles" text box type "font-family", it should highlight a line that starts with "font-family". Click on the text after the colons and try removing the first font name (coma included). If nothing changes, do it again and again until either something changes in the page or there's no fonts names left. If there are no font names left, try typing "Liberation Sans", tell me if the fonts on the pages change.

Usually the version doesn't matter much but developers still add these checks that block you. I've worked around issues like that before by just using a hex editor to change the version string inside the flash .so file.

Most likely whatever checks they're using aren't looking for exact versions, but just that you're above a minimum requirement, so you could just set your flash version to maybe: 99.9.9.999
(or whatever the highest values you can set are without having to add digits, remember in a hex editor usually you don't want to add/remove any characters or you'll mess everything up, just change existing characters)
>>
>>62134198
No, btrfs is still an experimental fs and is prone to corrupting your fs for no reason.
>>
>>62124634
1) there are numerous DEs such as gnome, XFCE and the like that are very easy to use
2) it's important for security. the avg user should add themselves as a sudoer and disable root login
3) it easy, just type sudo apt-get install whatever and it's right there
4) most things are already compiled for you, though you always have the option to compile

Bait post
>>
>>62134245
By the way, you can go here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/about/
to see what your current flash version is and that might help you search the .so file for the version string

i don't really see a reason except if you never like, installed a OS by yourself, using a terminal

gentoo install isn't hard, the worst part is waiting for everything to compile

the thing why vms are for pussies is that when a problem shows up you cant fix, you close the vm, but when you're forced to fix it, you learn how to do it, which saves time, time is money.

gentoo install is convoluted and excessive.
I can install arch 100 times in the time it takes to get gentoo setup, not even compiling,just setup!

Because 4chan isn't some chat window, you get some time to think and time enough to make a good post (and even enough time to attach a picture, which is the main purpose of this site).

It's an /int/ meme; t. is a shorthand for terveisin, which is Finnish for "with regards".

I've been using Arch for 5 years and I recently installed ubuntu on my desktop because it uses an older version of GCC and holy crap I am impressed.

It literally just werks. And all the things that didn't "just werk". Didn't have to fuck around with graphics drivers, network drivers, printer etc. So far it required less work to set up than fucking windows. Why anyone still chooses to use that is beyond me.

Its not perfect, I still prefer pacman and I haven't decided if I like gnome or if I should try kde/plasma. But its definitely nicer to not have to autistically worry about my i3config. I just copied over my vimrc and Xresources and its good to go.

I would have used Debian but that shit is harder to install than fucking Arch, so you know something is wrong with that piece of shit

Why not just use Fedora workstation?
>>
>>62137776
>Fedora
Why even think about installing Fedora in the first place? There's no reason for it to exist. It doesn't fill any gap, the user repos are a ghost town. You get trolled with "strict freedom guidelines" but get blobs. The only reason I could think of which justifies the existence of Fedora is that Red Hat needs some labors for beta-testing and shilling the "Linux how it should be", e.g. systemd. It's crap. It's for people who buy helvetica fonts instead of just using Liberation, people who don't want to get bullied for using Noobuntu. Fedora is for hat tipping sheeps.

I still don't understand why in hell you would name your distro fedora.

Arch fag. Other than the usual "pacman -Syu" what other pacman commands are useful to learn?
>>
>>62137919
Linus has no idea how shit works except for the kernel. He's using Fedora simply because it was "easy to install" compared to Debian/Ubuntu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHGTs1NSB1s
I wouldn't even be surprised if he got money for using it.

Coming from AUR.

I usually compile and install those in my home. I have made few packages for my own soft, but usually I install directly into my home.

I mean, not coming from AUR.

I installed things for years in my home and I have no problems. I install few things in there. And if things go wrong (last time was years ago) I rm every folder in ~/local that is not src and reinstall what I need. It works perfectly.

Hello, Linux friends!

I recently got a free computer with 4 GB of RAM, AMD E-350.

I've never learned Linux before but really, really want to.

I was thinking about setting this PC up as a personal VPN. Do you guys think that is a good idea?

If so, what distro would you recommend? I don't mind jumping into the deep end with a tough to learn OS. I don't do much with my free time.
>>

Arch has an installer, it's called pacstrap.

na, its not like that man. I tried a few times to install non-free wifi driver in debian but lacked the motivation to do so. I believe it will be the same with devuan.

with antiX I clicked
>network
>wireless

and I was connected. if this is not easier than adding non-free repos in sources.list and installing it...
>>
>>62138608
Not a meme. Just the truth. pacstrap install the OS in any folder you want.
>>

>>
>>62138754

install CloverOS. It is a script that let's you install Gentoo and uses custom USE flags. It has a binhost so you don't need to compile everything, only things you want to customize and even then you can ask the dev to add new packages or change some USE flags in the binhost packages if it makes sense.
I am using it right now in a old notebook with 1GB ram and it runs pretty fast.
