I'm planning on forsaking my desktop and buying a ThinkPad as my main computer for as long as it lasts (preferably W series).

Does anyone have experience with this kind of sentiment? I feel like everything that I do today on my desktop, I could do on a ThinkPad no problem.

Yes, i did that since i lost interest in videogames.

Get a docking station and plug your favorite memechanical keyboard and IPS monitor(s) to it.

I did this. Currently typing from my
>ThinkPad X220
connected to an UltraBase with a 500GB HDD instead of the disc drive. Don't need it, never have. This all is connected via a KVM switch to a mech keyboard (meme lvls, right) and mouse. The monitor is plugged directly into the Ultrabase.

My desktop is sitting on the other side of the monitor, with the same KVM switch and a DVI cable running to the other port in my monitor.

Quite happy with this setup, gives me everything I need and I got the dock for approx 10$ (mind you, Yuropoor prices suck ass).

It's the best work setup for me. Before, I had to cloud sync my Windows desktop to the Debian laptop, but now it's all on the lappy toppy and Windaz is only there for gaming.

>bonus: Got a charging cradle for my Nexus 5X and I type SMS on it via Remote keyboard. Living the dream.

The benefit of a T430 is better CPU power, battery life, & GPU at the cost of being mostly limited to OEM batteries and the 6 row keyboard layout, which is negligible if you're new to ThinkPads.

>>62121466
Sweet.
You can swap the trackpad but I've had trouble with middle scroll and two finger touch on windows. It just werks on linux.
>>
>>62122104

>>

You could always backup the EPROM chip if you have the right equipment.

Welp. At least I changed my grub loader to picture in OP's bios image.
>>
>>62119733
Not a bad option if your desktop is shitty. Get an ultrabase and you'll be able to always be on the go by just undocking your Thinkpad when you go to work and docking it when you get home to get a desktop in seconds.

I personally have a rather powerful desktop so I wouldn't do it, but if you run a toaster getting an x220 or a t420 with an ultrabase is a great option for upgrading cheaply.

How does the W500 stack up against the W510?

I'm seeing a noticeable difference in price, which isn't too much of a concern but being poor college fag, it is something that is a deciding factor.

The 510 at a glance, is clearly beefier. 16GB Ram as opposed to 8GB, 250GB SSD, CPUs clock in far better on the 510 hands down.

These are my primary concerns as I need a Workbook for my CAD and Solid Desk work, but I've never used Autocad or SD on a laptop, only work stations and my Gaming Rig, so I don't exactly know how either runs on a Laptop let alone a Thinkpad, but in the end, I just need something that I know will run either smooth as butter, with as little stutter as possible

I know Autocad should be more than fine seeing as it can practically run on a toaster, but Solidworks is memory intensive as far as I know.

Anything past the --30 generation is electrically incompatible due to the removal of physical volume controls. T431s/T430u might also be? They're sort of weird inbetween designs. If the keyboard doesn't have the volume controls and mute buttons with LEDs, you won't be able to replace it. Anything from a series besides T, W, or X2 is also probably incompatible.

T430s gets the worst battery life of the three by far, having the most power-hungry configuration on top of a lower-capacity 6cell battery at best. X230 is more /tpg/ approved, X240 might edge it out in battery life only. X230 performs better and doesn't require a touchpad swap just to make it even remotely usable.

I never had an issue with the smaller screen. The important thing is that the X230 and X240 have IPS options, while the T430s' stock panel is a really low-quality TN. Even if it is bigger and higher-resolution compared to the X230, it's much worse to look at because of the poor viewing angles and colors.

I've seen better on eBay. My goal is one that's around 100, 110 max
I want it with a battery and at least 4 gb ram in good condition. The only problem is I can find ones that have 4 gb ram in good condition, but they don't have batteries or hdd caddies, and by the time you order those it's like 130.
I found one for 115, but that's pushing it.
I'm mostly trying to justify canceling the x200 tablet order by getting something that isn't much more expensive, but I can't guarantee the seller will cancel the tablet order.

Is the x200 that much different in performance than the x220? That's the main reason I wanted the x220 and because of the meme of having both t420 and x220

But...

>>62126143
I'd say that it's a nice tablet computer overall. The lack of a trackpad is something I LOVE about this model. The size is big enough to get a nice large canvas but small enough that you can hold it in your arm and draw on it. Or lay it on the table and hover over it like paper. The only thing is that the pressure sensitivity is not all that great. Because the technology is a little old, I feel like I have to press hard enough that I feel like I'm losing the ability to draw softly.

If you've ever used any drawing tablet, you can get light strokes with minimal pressure. But depending on what programs you use or what you're drawing, you can get away with a lot. Also make sure you get the drivers for it.

>>62126153
thank you. Also good advice!

>>62126194
I use Xournal for that. It comes out decently enough. Xournal can give you a few templates to work with, like college rule, grid paper, or blank, and you can draw, right, highlight anything you'd like. Plus you can move around anything you write after the fact and place it where you want it.

Then when you're all done you can keep it in the Xournal format or export it as a PDF. And you can annotate existing PDF files if you want and export that as a new PDF. I'll upload an example of what that might look like.

here's how it might look like if you were using it. I drew all of that with my right hand but held the pen with the left hand. I'd say with a bit of practice, you can write decently well on it and use it as a notebook. Not as easy and simple as paper but much more flexible and powerful if you work at it.

I found a guy on Craigslist willing to preinstall W7, W10, or Ubuntu on one of these. It has an i5, 128gb SSD, and 8gb of RAM. I was thinking of asking him to load W7 with a 32gb Ubuntu partition.
In particular I was wondering how well Xournal works. I was looking to switch from paper notetaking to Onenote, and while I'm sure Xournal is going to run faster, I think the pen functionality should be comparable. Is palm rejection good? Should I buy one of those drawing gloves to stop my hand from sticking to the screen?

Yeah man it's a nice computer. But just think about what your needs are and how much expandability you want in your laptop. The x200 tablet only has SATA II, and can only hold one HDD/SSD as it has no CD/DVD drive. But you can get the dock, which I have, and add an extra hard drive in that.

>>62126585
When I got it it had an HDD with win7 fresh on it. It had all of the lenovo drivers and even a backup partition for all of the software. I think it was the original from the factory. Well it was a bit sluggish by today's standards but the software all worked well. Even the included Microsoft Journal worked very well with the pen.

Right now my x200 Tablet has a Core 2 Duo clocked at 1.86 Ghz. When just normal web browsing(like 4-6 tabs open for me;no youtube or streaming sites) it's still blazing. I can watch 720p videos just fine as the screen is 1280x800. It's a 16:10 so I don't know if you're into that or not. All text is sharp to me and that's what I mostly wanted this computer for: typing and writing. I write a lot in emacs and the text is nice and clear. Also the x200 tablet does not have a touch screen. Only the included pen can write on the screen so you don't have to worry about palm rejection.

But from time to time I do use ffmpeg to convert video files or audio files and sometimes recode files. Doing audio conversion is fine, depending on the project. Video is where it starts to slow down a bit, especially if the file is big. Actually using Audacity to edit a file was no problem. I edited a 16 minute file, did noise reduction and a few other edits and exporting .wav or .flac files was only a few seconds.

Overall if you want a light machine that can do most basic everyday tasks and also some light content creation, this is great. Any very heavy CPU tasks might make this a not so great choice. The x220T has a better screen for drawing on I've heard, more pressure levels on the pen plus a touch screen.

I've been worrying about the same thing, so far I have found every listing for these screens warns they will send out a """"compatible"""" screen if they don't have the stock in, but I assume they never have the originals and just work off these other monitors. I don't mind too much as long as the screen is still matching quality but I have no idea..

I am quite worried because 6 months ago I already tried to "upgrade" my screen. What I got in the mail was the worst screen in my life. Indeed, it was 900p and compatible, but the colors were green-ish, so I installed my 768p panel back and sent this monster back to the seller.

I've been looking at the 70++ but I can't find a solid answer for how much battery life it'll give me.
I think I'll just go to 1600x900 for the screen, anything is better than 1366x768.
As for the CPU, I'm not sure if I'll need to upgrade the heatsink, it only has an i5 2520m atm and a 10w higher quad core cpu might be forced to throttle..

Bought a couple T420s's locally for $30 a piece. Noticing some browning on one of the screens and some fan whine. Overall really fucking satisfied with this machine running Arch (meme'n). I've seen an IPS mod for these, but the FHDs seem to be just drop and go. What should I go with? Running a nice IPS widescreen on my desktop so I know what those look like and I love them, do FHD panels even compare?

I have a T430s that has been perfect for four years, but out of nowhere this morning the display totally shat the bed. It started looking like pic related, and then began going completely black and flashing that distorted image. I'm 95% on it being an issue with the screen itself bacause my external monitor is working fine and taking screenshots both of the screens look totally normal. What can i do? Is it just a connection that jostled loose or am I going to have to try to replace the entire display?

Well I still think you could do better than a surface. How important is drawing for you? Are you like an art student or something? If so, I'd just go full blast and get a dedicated drawing computer rather than a Surface or even a thinkpad. I swear I'm not a Huion shill, I just like the stuff they make

^ It's probably worth that much in all honesty. Wacom is nice but overpriced. Unless you're really that loyal, the Huion will probably serve you well.

Also I'm about to get an x220T so I'll let you know how it does with drawing if you're still hanging around.

Batteries are probably dead.
Charge it for 6+ hours and see if it turns on.

>>62133612
From the looks of it, maybe it got loose.
I'd say remove the keyboard and reattach the LCD ribbon cable.
If that doesn't work, remove the LCD and reseat that cable.
If it still persists, it might be the LCD or mobo.

I had a strange issue on the T420s w/ nVidia GPU. It would think my display was a projector display, really strange. I didn't figure out why but maybe yours might have some issue too like that?

the whole selling point of the meme is that they're cheap while being decently reliable and well built, they excel in areas like dev work but if you want to do anything heavy on the ageing processors, like browsing modern websites using modern browsers, then you're not really going to have a good time on a <$100 used laptop
doesn't even have to be thinkpads, it applies to other business orientated laptop manufacturers like hp and dell, old apple laptops would be fine but they usually retain a bunch of resale value so they're not nearly as attractive in the same price point
