I have 2 questions

The first is I'm looking at upgrading the screen in my t430. The guide on the wiki says to buy a ribbon style cable and cut it a bit so it will fit, but wouldn't pic related work fine too? Or will the fit be too tight?

2nd, what is a good hard case for a t430? Pelican or something else?

dedicated graphics just has an extra heatpipe, the sink itself isnt really any larger

There are some who claim there are differences in the fans (noise) between models, but I would guess this has more to do with when that particular heatsink was manufactured.

You could always try something like pic related if you want siccc overclocks. A heatpad on top of the cpus heatpipe might transfer heat to the metal tray of the mobo - this is something I intend to try

That's only for the s models so he's fugged and the alienware mod is the best he can do.
>>
>>62107193

I was going to go the x1 carbon screen route. I had no idea those converter boards were still for sale so I guess I'll do that instead.

>>62107505

I hope those chinks make a new mobo for the t430 that supports ryzen apus
>>

>You could always try something like pic related if you want siccc overclocks. A heatpad on top of the cpus heatpipe might transfer heat to the metal tray of the mobo - this is something I intend to try

I'm thinking of trying this, too. I upgraded my T430 CPU to an i7-3720QM and it runs pretty hot under load.
>>
>>62107547
>That's only for the s models so he's fugged

god fucking dammit why can they do it for the s but not the regular 430?

There is a thread on thinkpads.com about 1440x2560 for the s, and the guy says they probably wont do the regular one.
>>
>>62107567
>why can they do it for the s but not the regular 430?
too cramped, flickering issues because of heavy interference or something like that iirc
>>

This is exactly what I'm thinking of doing too.

Do you have the nvidia mobo or integrated? I'm kinda worried about power draw with that cpu + nvidia.

Ignore the wiki, the best screen upgrade choice is the Alienware M14x R2 screen. It's glossy but has similar viewing angles to the X1C display and has the benefit of being a drop-in replacement requiring no modifications (unless your previous screen was just 768p in which case you'll need the HD+ display cable)

Just make sure you don't get cucked with a "compatible" screen that is the wrong model. best way to make sure you get the right screen is to order a whole upper lid from Alienware M14x R2

>2nd, what is a good hard case for a t430?
It's a thinkpad, it is its own hard case
>>
>>62107467
Would pic related even do anything? There isn't any airflow through the laptop right?
>>
>>62107710
Yeah, I have the Nvidia model. Because that CPU has a slightly higher power draw, the 65W charger isn't enough to charge the laptop while it's on. I've got a separate 90W charger for it.
>>
>>62107567
Board is a different layout, on the non-s the spot where the converter board can fit is also where the power supply hardware is located which interferes with the converter board
>>
>>62107776
>Just make sure you don't get cucked with a "compatible" screen that is the wrong model. best way to make sure you get the right screen is to order a whole upper lid from Alienware M14x R2

Yeah I know about this issue. Thanks for the tip on the alienware screen though. Does it have screws too?
>>
>>62107806
Yes, unlike the X1C screen

I have a T420 with the real Alienware screen in, I can take some photos at various angles if you want to see how it looks

You heard wrong, the 230 CPU is actually much faster because 240 is when they started using ULV
Also, the 240 only has single channel RAM while the 220/230 has dual channel

okay, so I was recently given a t61 and a t500 by a relative. Both have a 1680 by 1050 screen. I'm trying to figure out what to do with them. I was thinking of using the t61 for playing some classic gaymes, as it has the nvidia chipset, while the t500 could probably work well as a development environment because of the resolution. The only problem is that I already have a t420 that I use and don't feel like migrating my shit over.

so if the T420 isn't getting a 1080p screen and it doesnt have USB 3.0 (but can be added through the expresscard slot, should I get one? the T420s doesn't have an upgradeable CPU, the T430s is still stupidly expensive here, the T520 could be perfect but the coreboot site doesn't say anything about expresscard support and there are some problems. should I get this or wait until the chinks tell us about a T420 upgrade kit? arigatêau

Look around more. I got an x220 with an i7 and 8GB for $120. Has a 128GB SSD as well. Just look for ones without an OS―people sell them for much cheaper. Then you can put linux on for free, or be a pleb and pirate windows.
>>
>>62113451

I assume this is via Craigslist? I don't have that here. Cheapest+best I could find (local sites, ebay) was the x220 i7tablet refurbished with an 180 GB SSD for 260 euros (310 USD) .
>>
>>62113379
I loved my T420 but still upgraded to a T440p eventually because i had enough of the awful 1600x900 TN screen viewing angles, however i never did the alienware screen mod because finding the exact display model instead of "compatible ones" over here is impossible.

>wait until the chinks tell us about a T420 upgrade kit?
Very unlikely. One was released like 2 years ago or something which had heavy flickering issues on some boards (there's a vid on YT) and nothing else came after that except for the x220/30 pepe fhd mod and a fhd mod for the t420s/30s (s-versions only).

The max you could do is maybe put a X201's speakers into a X200, but good luck fitting it into the case (The motherboard of the X200 is bigger than the X201). The speakers are as standard as they get connection-wise internally, but there's close to no space at all in that little case. You're better off sticking with what you have unless you're willing to do an ass-load of literal hacking.

Also, Libreboot it if you haven't already.

Thanks. I'm gonna pull the trigger on this. I WILL BE NICE AND SHARE.

https://www.porterelectronics.com/lenovo-thinkpad-x220-2-3ghz-i5/

Lenovo X220 i5-2520M 4GB RAM - $139.99

8GB is an extra $45.00, which brings it to $184.99 with that option. Win7 64-bit is a free update (I'm installing linux tho, but it'll be nice to at least have the product key). I'm going to spring for 8GB because I'll be upgrading anyway. This apparently is a one day sale. I don't like buying sight unseen but supposedly these are in "Grade A" condition, probably just sat at a desk most of the time before being retired.

Everything I've found that is this cheap is usually all fucked up looking, and this is backed by a 90 day warranty so fuck it, not a bad deal at all when you add it all up. Screen upgrade is next for me. Thanks >>62115854 !!

I still don't recommend searching by model on ebay though, because I ordered a B140RTN02.1 listing one and got some other model and had to return it

Instead I found the part number for the M14x R2 upper lid including screen and ordered that and it had the real B140RTN02.1 in it

>>
>>62117059
Well if it's continuous and prone to increasing then that sounds really annoying.

As i said my T420 makes that noise only when taxing the SSD with writes, it stays silent otherwise of course until the CPU reaches the 60c point which i set up and then the fan starts until the temperature decreases.
>>

Why dongle? There are several WLAN cards the X230 supports that supports dual band

Get one of these:
>Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 3x3
>Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 2x2
>Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6250 2x2 + WiMAX

All of these are dual band a/b/g/n

Yes but the 15w ulv processor will give you splendid battery life without being too shit for a small portable computer, assuming you want portability and battery life over everything else of course, otherwise get a T or W.
>>
>>62116858
W series are the top of the line, standing above even the supposed flagship T series. Best CPUs, GPUs, screens, RAM capacity, and build quality in their generation. They're Thinkpads for people who don't believe in making compromises.

how bad of an idea would it be if I were to install a cheap mini ssd thats about 60gb jn my t420 with debian on it? I hear small ssds are awful
>>
>>62117444
There is no one "stock" wifi card
Both x220 and x230 had several options
Some supported dual band and some dont
Some have 3x3 antennas and some only 1x1

In fact I think the x220 and x230 had the exact same options
>>
>>62113575
That's 90 euro less, shipping might punch into that but $310 way more reasonable than over $400
>>
>>62117458
What makes T440p better?
L440 has an expresscard
I can't think of any reason on paper the T440p would be better other than the L440 having a thicker uglier bezel

Otherwise they have the same upgrade potential with CPU and screens
>>
What's owning a t440p like? I mean it looks like you could easily bludgeon someone to death with it. But reading that notebookcheck review, assuming you do the trackpad swap it looks like a good buy. Battery bridge would be nice though, it sounds like a good feature.

If my thinkpad is booting like normal but suddenly shutting off or going into a black screen is this most likely a thermal problem?

It's acting the same way on both battery and power. It's has custom init firmware (libreboot) so not sure if that has something to do with it

ah. That could be likely. Does the fan unit simply fry and need to be replaced? I guess taking apart and booting (comparing it to normal behavior) would be the fastest way to find out

Lowered Durability
Having to modify your newer system with older hardware to achieve the level of kino of the older system.
>>
I have an x250 with the i7 5600U, 8GBs of RAM and 768 IPS display. Is there anything I could upgrade or anything worth upgrading? Maybe I could get one of these big batteries, but I don't know if these exists for that model.
I don't think a 1080 screen would be really good since it's a fucking 12" screen, and it would drain more battery.

I have used it just for light gaming at work and taking notes and editing documents, nothing an i3 wouldn't handle.
>>
>>62117801
>Lowered Durability
The cases are exactly the same except for the DP area (it has a mini DP instead of DP)

>Having to modify your newer system with older hardware to achieve the level of kino of the older system.
Resulting in a higher level of kino than was possible in the older system (due to faster cpu, better power/battery efficiency, much betetr iGPU, and more/any USB3.0 ports)

>Do you carry it around?
Yes, it's my main computer and use it docked with extra monitors when i come home.
>Is the screen nice?
No it's crap but as i said this is the 1366x768 low end TN shit, still waiting for the good AUO IPS one to arrive.
>Battery life?
Like 2-2.5 hrs tops but it's a 6-cell with 618 discharge cycles on it, waiting for the new 9-cell to arrive.
>Gaem?
Dunno i don't play videogames but i don't think the HD4600 would be that bad for low/mid end games. There's also a dGPU model if you're into that.
