Bet you guys thought I was gone for good huh? Finally got around to finishing the Churchill. Solid bold over all, tedious and time consuming but relatively easy to build. My only major issue is that the effort that went in to making the tracks and the front drive wheels actually fit is fucking wasted by the pin holes the track pieces slot in to being too far forward, making the track sag off the front of the wheels. Genuinely pissed about this since the it makes the model look like shit up close, but it's redeemed by the turret having full rotation.

7.5/10, pretty cool, would recommend

Something that's more for rookies might be to buy an ESP8266 (<2$) and PIR sensor (<2$) to have a motion sensor. You might even have it send you texts using apis like https://www.twilio.com/sms (which has a guide for ESP8266 https://www.twilio.com/docs/guides/send-sms-and-mms-messages-esp8266-cpp)
The bluetooth project isn't that hard either though and there's an instructable for a similar project (http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Bluetooth-Speaker-PartyBar/). It's a bit more involved on the hardware side though. With the suggested ESP8266 project you'd just connect the ESP8266 for programming and connect a GPIO pin to read the value from the PIR. The rest would be software.

Playing with LED strips is always fun.
SPI-LCD modules are also something to look into. DYI kits as anon suggested is something worth looking at too.

I'm in the UK and going to China on the 6th of September so I don't know if I would be pushing my luck by ordering a Mi6 today.

What's your experience with Chinese fanless HDMI Windows 10 computers?

I want to buy one, hook it up to my 32" LCD TV and if I later decide to buy a bigger one I'd simply change the screen and nothing else. Also, I could use the TV+comp combo as a backup computer in case something goes wrong with my laptop.

And I could use my ColorMunki to calibrate the screen as if it was just another monitor.

And I could install new codecs in case something better than x264/x265 shows up, play less demanding vidya (e.g. PS1/2 games on an emulator) etc.

I see no downsides to this but maybe these computers aren't as good as they seem.
