Is it possible to make a persistent portable OS installed on a USB flash drive or an SD card with a USB adapter?
> SD card VS USB Flash Drive for bootable OS?
Which solution is faster and reliable?
Will it act as a normal HDD?
Also will I encounter any slowdowns doing this?

Yes you can, you *might* experience some fun in going from system to system due to hardware, but you might not.
USB would be the way to go over SD.
It will act as a normal drive.
If it's USB3 it will be fine for speed, but USB drives dont have the same lifespan as an SSD so it will degrade faster.

both will work
i have a full installation of Arch on a 64GB microSD card and it works really well
if im on my work laptop i use the sd card slot with an adapter
on the desktop i use an usb adapter
both boot like a regular hdd
you barely notice that its running off of a slower storage since most of the shit you do is in RAM, some programs take a bit longer to open but thats no biggie

I thought a USB would have a much higher read and write cycles then a SD card.

Drivers huh?
I didn't think think of that.

It definitely would, but im talking SSD's here.
(Also, nice get.)
Buy an 2,5" external enclosure and put an ssd in there.
Thank me later.

What about a Class 10 SD card? Or some superior class if it exists?
>>62100082
It needs to be more portable than that.
Like something you can attach to your keychain.

I just bought that USB.

That means it's a minimum of 10Mb/s write speed
Your flash storage would die soon when a lot of write access happens (which usually is the case). It's also possible to use filesystems read-only and dynamically mount directories rw.

>filesystems read-only and dynamically mount directories rw
Can you elaborate?
>>62100266
I can, but I won't. This will help you: https://hallard.me/raspberry-pi-read-only/

I use this for my rescue system.
>>62099918
Yes. Just install it like usual. Don't enable swap, edit fstab to set /tmp running in RAM.

>debian stable on the desktop
lmao you got memed
>>62100436
Why you idiot?
Give me one reason it's bad.

A windows user that wants to try linux will sure be satisfied with using years old software when he could just upgrade whenever he wants to windows.
>>62100568
Not really. I know what I'm getting myself into.
>>62100084
class 10 is kind of a meme.
