I think anything that uses the ATA secure erase or enhanced secure erase is better, because that also wipes reallocated sectors (which are not accessible by most software tools, even dban). however not many tools exist (hdparm and HDDErase are the only ones I know of) that do this, and the non-linux one (HDDErase) doesn't have much support for SATA controllers.

probably. if they aren't laptop sized, I doubt anyone would be looking for them on the off chance they score something. theres easier ways to get your info.
DD is garbage and slow, shred is superior. DBAN is best and wipes drives the fastest but suffers from issues when wiping multiple drives simultaneously no matter which method of erasure you use. DD and Shred have this issue when you wipe randomly but not when you write zeroes.
