What is the best Linux OS ever? I'm currently using Ubuntu and am pretty satisfied. Was just wondering if theres any better alternatives?

Devuan as long as Debian sucks the NSA/Systemd.

I saw this picture earlier, it's an Ubuntu in VM on Mac OS.

Install ubuntu tweak tool or unity tweak
There are lots of themes, just install Arc theme to look good without trying
Search Unity related customizations online

But Unity is not supported anymore and 2 months later the next release won't be come with Unity. If you are using 17.04 do not upgrade to 17.10, it will remove your current desktop and will install GNOME. If you want to use Unity so much 16.04 will supported for like 2021~
>>
>>62077869
Elementary OS is shite, go with debian.
>>
>>62078188
Debian cannot be used in stock config anymore because of systemd. Either install sysv or a systemd-free distro.

Happy with Mint. Started with it, and then went to Ubuntu, then Debian, then I tried Arch for a while, and just decided that I was happy enough to go the simple route. That said, I install everything and keep the kernel on the latest stable build.

Doing what I did was actually for the best, because it helped me learn how to handle most shit, and where to look when something happens that I don't know how to fix, but its a rarity in Mint.

Also, Mint is bloated by Linux standards, but is nothing compared to even Windows 7.
>>
>>62078350
I think this is because below a certain level of bloat you aren't going to be slowed down under linux, windows just grinds to a fucking halt at an arbitrary amount of bloat.
>>
>>62077784

>ever

we run RHEL 6, 7 for business, for convenience I have CentOS 6, 7 at home for experiments on VMs

Used to run Slackware for loooong time in the past, but got lazy and switched to Fedora 26 on laptop

Had ArchLinux on workstation at the office, lots of guys had Ubuntu installed too, in past jobs Debian was OS of choice

Protip from hacker: don't be a brand fag, don't focus on single distribution, expand your horizons, try and find what fits YOU, just be comfy in GNU/Linux in general, every distro has it's use and pros/cons. you will win internetz.
>>
peppermint os 7
>>
>>62078369
Yeah. You can run Mint with multiple browsers open with dozens of tabs per browser, and still be well under 4GB of RAM usage. I don't think you'll have an issue so long as you have at least that much (and if you don't, it's pretty cheap and easy to upgrade to 4GB).
>>
Looks like I'm stuck between Linux Mint, CentOS or Debian GNU. Which would you recommend?
>>
I don't really think you're going to have any improvements in your productivity by moving from Ubuntu to Debian or Mint

if you were concerned about ricing, you could always install GNOME onto Ubuntu
>>
>>62078575
CentOS is shit for desktop use.
Pick Kubuntu, Mint Cinnamon, ZorinOS Lite or Ubuntu GNOME
>>
>>62077796
This Guy gets it.
>>
>>62078727
Another anon here, why Mint over Debian?
>>
>>62078727
Why you dont recommend Xubuntu?
>>
>>62078727
Don't use Kubuntu if you want KDE, use KDE Neon, you'll encounter much less issues
>>
>>62078727
>kubuntu

i don't know how it behaves on bare metal but it really has issues as a vm, and even eOS didn't have any issues
>>
>>62078780
because he's just some shit on the internet.

centos is a great os if you never want anything to break, ever. it also has modern-enough packages.
>>
>>62078377
>Protip from hacker: don't be a brand fag, don't focus on single distribution, expand your horizons, try and find what fits YOU, just be comfy in GNU/Linux in general, every distro has it's use and pros/cons. you will win internetz.

this man is enlightened about os choice.
>>
>>62078780
Because it looks like shit.

>>62078797
Don't listen to this retard. Kubuntu and openSUSE are only good KDE distros. KDE Neon crashes on a weekly basis. It's an unstable OS. Stop recommending it to beginners.

>>62078811
>centOS is great
>except it's outdated so no hardware support for new hardware
>b-but muh stability
There are plenty of stable distributions out there. There's no point in using an OS made for servers on a desktop.
>>
>>62078912
>Because it looks like shit.
But thats subjective, anon.
>>
>>62078935
Agreed
>>
>>62078912
>KDE Neon crashes on a weekly basis. It's an unstable OS. Stop recommending it to beginners.
I have had the complete opposite experience. Kubuntu regularly crashed for me, KDE neon was stable in comparison. I see the sentiment echoed quite often that Kubuntu is riddled with issues too, so perhaps you should stop recommending it
>>
>>62077784
ide say ubuntu, i used fedora back inearly 2000's dabbled with SUSE a bit then found ubuntu 7.04 and didnt use anything other up until way past 14.** LTS.
>>
>>62078131
>But Unity is not supported anymore
I hate canonical for making this decision. Unity is the most normal and contemporary looking DE for linux. Gnome is steaming pile of turds.
>>
>>62078964
Well, I personally had a shit experience with KDE neon. And it being a literal testing ground for KDE means it should objectively be less stable than other KDE distros.

Just get ubuntu. It's well documented and has a lot of packages. After using ubuntu i swapped from fedora, to manjaro, to Arch and ended up back with ubuntu. Swapping distros is fun, sure. But honeslty, having a system that works is the most important part. What distro you choose is basically irrelevant since you can change pretty much everything about it anyways.

Ok fa/g/gots

Tell me a DE with simplicity of Gnome 3.2x but also supports thumbnail in file picker and merge titlebar on firefox with its tabbar.

These two things want me to hate Gnome but Natilus is fucking comfy as fuck I mean fuck, come on look at it!
>>
>>62078992
don't worry they're fixing GNOME to what it should have been from the start, it won't be best, but imo it will be the most usable default GNOME. They actually make some polls about features

I'm really enjoying Deepin, it's beautiful (imho) stable and has a great windows application support if you need it

Unironically, if you have the time, Gentoo. It's great, and much better than Ubuntu (aka Windows 11)

depends
for your grandma ubuntu gnome
for current release versions of things arch or fedora maybe
diff use cases but i would certainly not recommend a hobby distro sorry (however happy its user base might be)

Fedora with GNOME
>>
>>62085100
depends on if you like it or not. if you answer the question above i can help you figure it out. fedora is a good choice if you actually like Gnome3
>>
>>62085128
ok ill keep the fedora for now thanks a lot anon :)

Some of the research I do requires ubuntu 14.04 and it's alright. On my personal laptop I run Elementary OS and actually prefer it. I used to use ubuntu 16.04 and have also played with Arch.

All I do on linux is basic webbrowsing and development, which has a pretty good workflow on all linux os's at this point.

>>62077784
Go balls-deep and install gentoo, just to see if you like it. Very comfy autism.
>>
>>62085603

Virtually every distro ever made comes with GIMP, use that.

Also most programs that come with desktop environments are shit.

Like whatever text editor comes with your distro is probably shit. Just leave it there incase you absolutely positively must use something that's not vi or nano one day and everything else is broken

Stay with Ubuntu and ignore everything /g/ has to say. It doesn't get any better. If you must, try distros in a VM.
