This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

But it doesnt have to use an oscillating elememnt just because there were nobwatches without it before. Its like calling all quartzes synced to an atomic clock atomic because most of their precision comes from the atomic element.

Think about it like this, if the EM break is ever made so finely tuned that it keeps time on its own, and you add a quartz on top of that for some extra accuracy, is it a quartz watch?

So I got quoted $35 at one jeweler and $80 at another to change the battery, gaskets, and pressure seal to water tight resistance for my Tag Heur Formula 1.

The watch needs the battery changed like every 3 years.

Can I put a stronger battery that will last longer?

What watches don't need batteries?

I know my fathers rolex and brightling don't. He puts them in a box that spins them while he doesn't wear them.

Please help, I'm trying to get back into to watches like I used to as a young lad.

In some cases it can be less aesthetically jarring. A lot of the time just having a single rectangle of some color that doesn't match the dial can really mess up the watch face. That isn't much of an improvement, but I think it works pretty well on the Nomos worldtimer. IWC manages to pull it off somewhat better than the one you posted as well.

Definitely at least mostly Swiss, but they're not exactly transparent about their supply chain. How far back do you want to go? Final assembly of all the parts? Finishing the parts? Producing the parts from the metal stock? Growing their synthetic sapphires and rubies? Forging the metal? Mining the metal? Producing the ore through Earth's geological processes? Creating heavier elements from nuclear fusion? Creating the universe?

Why does it even really matter who made it and where it came from? They used to brag about using Swedish steel in their ads. Today they forge their own gold alloys. Their hands to this day are not made in-house, they come from Fiedler SA. They used to buy their bracelets from a company called Gay Frères, now it's a Rolex subsidiary. Those are all the little tidbits I know.

>>62074905
Hands and applied indices have been white gold for a while now. I think in Subs it started around the 80s.

316L stainless steel, what Rolex uses for their watches, is also used for plumbing that carries toilet water and feces out of your house.
>>
>>62079209
For it to be inexpensive it would have to remain an industrial process. It would be expensive for you to get an individual piece you have coated for a variety of reasons. The equipment is fairly specialized. The watch you have would have to be taken completely apart and professional cleaned before coating and it would make no sense as it doesn't provide anything but a cheap semi durable coating.

>316L stainless steel, what Rolex uses for their watches, is also used for plumbing that carries toilet water and feces out of your house.

This is wrong on both levels. For starters Rolex hasn't use 316L steel for their watches since the 1980's. Two, no one uses surgical grade stainless steel for fucking plumbing to your toilet.
>>
>>62079557

yeah Rolex actually uses 904l (http://www.finetubes.co.uk/products/specialist-tube-materials/stainless-steel-tubes/alloy-904l-uns-n08904-werkstoff-nr.-1.4539/) which is pretty fucking impressive.
>>
>>62079413
Obviously the pic is not mine so I can't take a better photo. I found it on someone's fb.
>>
>>62079504
That is not good, but it's also not representative of the depth of technical and historical knowledge about watches in these threads. Most watch forums on the internet are essentially totally dominated by people whose knowledge of watches consists of whatever marketing they've been exposed to and whatever mindless opinions they've picked up from their "wear it in good health!" fellow clueless idiots. You do realize most WUS participants wouldn't be able to explain to you how a mechanical watch works with a gun held to their head, right?
>>

I know that's why i only post here. We all have to work harder not to get into semantic arguments and post higher quality discussion however.

People have destroyed $100,000+ vintage watches doing this.

Doing redials on vintage Rolex watches is like your faggot millennial grandson taking your numbers matching Dodge Charger, stripping all of the body panels off, and turning it into some "stanced" river abomination.

Exceptionally well for one that was last serviced back in Japan. Though i don't have much time to wear it anymore but every time i do pick it up it's a good solid runner.

Also recently found a watchmaker that's both capable and willing to work on pretty much any watch i can grab my hands on, said watchmaker serviced these two over here and i need to figure out how and if i can manage to sell them via my judiaic internet voodoo.

Still unsure about pricing, as i'm doing it from NIS to USD and checking the profits on my part (since i'm selling it for somebody).

For the 162.0060 (562) De ville i was thinking somewhere from 260 to 320 and on the 30t2 anywhere from 360 to 520~ since it still has the radium lume (fuck knows, i've seen them all the way from 300 to 700 lately).

Both were checked and cleaned by a watchmaker and are running pretty smoothly.

Yes, of my Mark 4.5 Speedmaster. More than double, actually, not that I would ever sell it.

>>62081848
No, but I don't care about that. It has arguably the best true tool chronograph movement design ever made, since the chronograph is directly driven off the drivetrain and therefore the chronograph function has the highest shock resistance and g-force resistance of any mechanical chronograph movement ever made.

It also has a central chronograph minute register, making it much more legible for timing than trying to read a minute total off a small subdial. Finally, it's also one of the most reliable chronograph movements ever made.

yeah please stop. Your argument is semantic and nonsensical as well. the quartz oscillator is the only thing in the watch responsible for it being a watch and keeping accurate time. No quartz no watch. The quartz is ultimately responsible for accurate regulation and thus is an essential component in regulation. Seiko calls it a Tri-synchro regulator where all parts come together to make up the regulator. the electromagnet is not capable of timing the watch due to varied input power that has to be regulated. There is no way to make this watch work without REGULATING input power to the em which REGULATES the watch. This is what you are referring to as the em referencing the quartz crystal. This is an electromechanical quartz watch. There is no way around this. You can keep going for as long as you like. Shit up this thread as well. I could not give less of a fuck.

Dress watches can be worn with formalwear and even black tie. Some people don't wear a watch at all with black tie because you're not supposed to be checking the time, I think that's kind of silly. A proper dress watch is small and has a leather strap and they're usually precious metals. A steel watch with a bracelet is a sports watch.
>>
>>62085628
>own
But does he?
>>
>>62085509
At a black tie event your focus is on the event itself, the hosts, and guests; it might even be considered rude if you wear a watch because it could have the connotation that you have other places to be. Nowadays that rule is obviously pretty antiquated, but you should at least wear a watch that is understated and clean. You're not James Bond, so stop eyeing a big diver.

people keep saying this but they apply it to massive watches. A dress watch on any wrist between 6.75 and 7.75 inches should be 34-36 mm a dive watch should be 38-40mm. It should be bigger than a dress watch yet should not look retarded on peoples wrists. A submariner is a big fuck you watch already. 37mm on a woman is a bi t fucking much unless we are talking about a real big bitch.

It is a rock solid watch that wears smaller than its size and will be reliable but the movement sucks and it has qc issues with alignment. it is made in china and you can probably do better for the money considering you should replace the bracelet when you get it. If you like it it won't let you down. If you have any reservations keep looking.

It probably is (mostly because of the lugs), but the difference should be obvious between the two pictures.

In any case, here's an snk on a 16cm wrist; if the wrist in >>62087442 is really 15.3 then a lot of the stupid oversize appearance is the picture.

>>
>>62087845
The lugs in this pic are well short of the edge of the wrist. >>62087442 here they are clearly wider than the wrist.
The camera trickery does change things but it doesn't change that and to me the lugs are more of an indicator of how big a watch is rather than diameter.
