What are some decent Google Drive alternatives?
I was looking at Box vs. Dropbox since they've been around for a long time and seem stable, but I'm open to any suggestions.
A hard drive. Free cloud storage = botnet

>>62069917 is right, but if you need online storage (like I do for some not-too-much-personal stuff) MEGA (mega.nz) is the best and probably most secure choice around (encryption and shit, even to share your file if you want). Also they give you 50 Gb, vs the 2 of Dropbox.

Anything you store on any cloud server should be encrypted locally before it ever hits the wire. Never trust a cloud provider not to try and snoop in your shit. If they encrypt it for you, they can decrypt it.

Yeah okay, I'll just store it in my hard drive which in and of itself can go bust in 30 years by me simply using it. Not to mention the earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and floods that my hard drive is in risk of.
On the other hand, cloud storage can technically be infinite in lifespan. Not only that, it is fast, redundant, reliable, accessible anywhere, and virtually forever.
Pic extremely related.
owncloud
filezilla

Do you suggest using Amazon S3 in this case? Problem is, the media won't be as easily accessible since it's just an IaaS as opposed to the SaaS solutions.

i suggest wiring up an old box in your moms house with ddns. nice free solution
>>62070073
Why would you need filezilla when Owncloud and Nextcloud both have clients for prettymuch every OS...
>>62070132
Just use Nextcloud (fork of ownCloud) on a VPS. Wouldnt be any point using S3 as a cloud drive alternative. Just use digital ocean, linode, vultr, or w/e amazons vps is.

What's wrong with Google Drive? Just encrypt your data before uploading it

That's just bait for google's decryption ML algorithms.

Install OpenBSD or Debian on a Raspberry Pi 3 and hook a 1TB HDD to it with a cheap USB to SATA adapter. Make sure SSH is running on it and you can remotely access it from basically any device. If you're a GUI baby like me then then you can use FileZilla (it's FLOSS) to browse your local and remote files side by side. There's the poor (and lazy) man's home server.

But hey, at least my data is safe in the hands of the Botnet(tm)!
