i saw something about i have never installed archlinux should i use a helper so i linked it, the end is almost the same from a user pov just a lot simpler to do
>>
>>62067656
oh
guy was asking about arch specifically, perhaps i shouldve added "and if you're not comfortable with linux, use ubuntu".

not exactly something i can relate to, arch was my first proper linux desktop experience, and with the amount of support arch has i've never had an issue

i accept your notion that the end result is almost the same, though the same is true of countless distro choices

There's like a 40 step EFI meme and using a bootloader is apparently a pain in the ass, i remember using linux on tons of BIOS and even EFI windows boxes before and its never been this needlessly complicated.
The distro recommendation asking was more for "where do you recommend i settle down after using all this shit"

Do I still need to bridge the wlan interface to the Ethernet one? That's where I'm fucking up at the moment - clients can connect to the AP just fine and get assigned an IP by the router's DHCP server, it's just that when I bring up the bridge the IP of the host machine turns into a black hole for anything addressed to it specifically.
>>
I am in dire need of a distro recommendation.
After Arch broke my XMonad install after updating, I thought it may be time to switch to something a bit more stable.
Now I am on Debian 9 with xfce, and its the most horrendous system I ever used.
Holy fuck, everything randomly brakes all the time.
Sometimes it can't even properly turn the PC off without taking forever.
Network Manager randomly decides that it doesn't want to connect to my wlan.
Alsa and/or pulseaudio crash randomly too.
Is there anything that isn't bloated?
Maybe I should just go back to arch and never update...

I've switched my primary system over to GNU/Linux - but 85% of my experience programming has been with .NET C# on a Windows platform.

I understand that .NET Core is out and expanding, but there isn't much there for it (Console applications, web API.)

My other 15% is split between Java, and minimally C++.

Has anyone else made this transition, or have any ideas on how to cope with seemingly handicapping my self? I'd like to continue programming on GNU/Linux its just a bit difficult to kind of 'start over'.

Any recommendations on languages/libraries/frameworks that would make this less painful would be really appreciated (and friendly, if possible - I do understand i am an easy target).

>>

I tried to install just plasma but it couldnt find that thing. What did i do wrong? I just want a Ubuntu+DE without any unnecessary apps.
>>
>>62068806
don't install the meta-package. you clearly know what you want, so just install those bits.
>>
>>62068822
I thought that Kubuntu-full is the whole thing but i was wrong... Ill commands to install just plasma failed for me.
>>
>>62068335
Sounds like you are doing the bridge wrong. You are supposed to put the IP on the bridge interface, not on one of the slave interface. Try forgetting about the bridge and just enabling ip forwarding with sysctl (and iptables if relevant). Assuming you are using different subnets.
>>
>>62068806
I got the same thing in Debian when trying to install konsole, I think it is just how the kde stuff is packaged.
>>
>>62068923
i think the switch you want is --no-install-depends or something similar. try it out. give apt-mark a try too
>>
>>62068923
Youre probably right.
> kde-plasma-desktop --- This will install the core -- the bare-minimum required-- of KDE. That is, kdebase-apps, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace and kdm.
This is as bare as it gets. Still installs various software like firefox, ktorrent, dolphin, etc. That command didnt even work for me, had to use "kde-desktop".

This might sound stupid, but try some simple scripting. Something simple and personal for you, in bashscript or your favourite scripting language. Google around for a handful of videos about the unix environment. Learn about pipes and stuff.

I admit I don't have any experience in 'real' professional programming in big projects and stuff so I don't know how that'd work for you, but the thing that makes linux fun for me is that the whole operating system becomes your framework, your library.

Also, learn vim.

In my experience windows doesn't 'break' in the sense you're talking about. It's too restrictive for that. You get unexplainable/unsearchable errors though.
I once had a busted SATA connection and it loaded windows corrupted. Sometimes it wouldn't log in. Sometimes I'd get very strange artefacts. That's pretty much the only windows error I've had which wasn't a complete failure or the OS working completely fine.

Rolling release means that you're always up to date (more that you don't have to manage release upgrades), and the AUR means that you basically never have to do something yourself (custom compiled variants of something or wrapping some dependencies for a game or other program). The cherry is the smugness that must come from having people dislike you / your system for no tangible reason (this leads to elitism).

It's important to remember that an archfag's sense of superiority can quickly be crushed by asking how they would have solved X problem someone's experiencing (that they're commenting on) without relying on the AUR.

They're all package managers so they have the same general use. But they have different functionalities, otherwise they wouldn't go in different directions.

I can't tell you many differences but I know yum automatically updates the list of packages, while with apt-get you need to use "apt-get update".

I wouldn't recommend it.
Arch is a very good distro, but you need to know what is wrong with other distributions before you go with it.
You will waste more time than the average arch user if you don't know how you want your system to be setup and while CS is not a hard education, you will end hating to spend time on the distro when you don't have it.
There are so many distros where they made choices for you which is much better.
Manjaro can give you a taste of what arch could be, but it breaks more than arch so I wouldn't use that either.
Unless you know better, use the one the university recommends, it is more likely other people can help you out with problems you might have.

This is a legitimate post! <-That exclamation mark adds legitimacy.

I have a few projects I am working on and i thought it a good opportunity to try GNU/Linux.

These are serious questions:
I tried a couple of distros on my Intel Nuc and they didn't detect the network drivers, neither did Ubuntu LTS but regular Ubuntu just werked.

I see all these nice riced out interfaces on here, can you imagine my horror when that Gnome desktop arrived, I cursed it's orange and purple hues and fischer price side menu with buttons visible from space... I went outside kicked a puppy then installed Cinamon, which is nice default in a Windows 2000 sort of a way, are there any better Desktop environments?

My other question is around fonts, why do they look so horrible an a 65" screen and what can I do to make them less blurry?

Lastly, is it possible to install Cassandra on an ARM system? I had horrible trouble on my PCDuiono and gave up.

Are there any terminal color schemes that are designed for maximum contrast between all the possible combinations of colors and backgrounds?
I just made this one from http://ciembor.github.io/4bit/
It seems ok but some combinations are difficult to read. In particular white on yellow, which is used a lot in vim for highlighting.

ctrl-shift-v

$(sselp) or $(xsel -something)
>>
>>62077524
I'm doing it, but it doesn't work
I'm using XFCE if this makes a difference
Exec=mpv --player-operation-mode=pseudo-gui -- "$(sselp)"
>>
>>62077539
sh -c 'mpv "$(xsel -ob)"'
>>
>>62077556
Still doesn't work.
What I'm trying to do is create a desktop shortcut so when I copy a link into the clipboard it would open it.
>>
>>62077539
you don't have sselp installed do you

sselp is installed so does xsel.

are you sure you are clicking this modefied .desktop and not the default mpv.desktop
>>
>>62077662
Yes, I've even change the comment so I know which is which.
It's not the first .desktop I make, I've made few before for several twitch and chatubrate streams.

I want to open a terminal run an application, then be able to close the terminal window without having the application closed.
What's the best way to do it?

Fedora

sselp has a PRIMARY priority but in firefox it also works for clipbord(right click - copy link), i suppose you use another browser or copy url from somewhere else?

if with "$(sselp)" try to highlight the url instead of ctrl-c

else test xsel

Whats the point of Fedora again?

I'm using arch.

Somehow copying links from plain text works.
Highlight doesn't work
Xsel work the same to sselp.
Older version of firefox seem to work, but only with https sites, newer version doesn't.

Hey cool, I'm using Arch too!

How to you type a command without it being saved in history?
>>
>>62077902
Put a space in front of the command.
>>
>>62077770
ff5502 from mozilla
arch

Exec=mpv --cache=no --sub-auto=no --ytdl-format=worstaudio --no-stop-screensaver --script-opts=osc-visibility=always --player-operation-mode=pseudo-gui
-- "$(sselp)"
Terminal=false

this worked with just highlighting the url in ff

try to kill/off your xfce-panel and start it from a terminal to see if it will show any error msgs after you click your moded .desktop

Only the root partition or all of them? Are there any downsides to it? Drop in performance?
>>
>>62077907
Tried that, didn't work.
>>
>>62077934
What shell are you using?
>>
>>62077941
Bash
>>
>>62077962
export HISTCONTROL='ignoreboth'

Put this in your bashrc. To see what it does, run:
man -P 'less +/HISTCONTROL' bash
>>
>>62077972
Now it doesn't save any at all.
>>
>>62077993
Change "ignoreboth" to "ignorespace".
>>
>>62078002
That worked.
Thanks.
Why ignorespace worked while ignoreboth doesn't?
>>
>>62078010
ignoreboth ignores commands beginning with a space and duplicate commands (when you run ls 10 times, only one ls will be saved into the history). You propably tested it with the same command.

This literally just happened to me on Wednesday.
>Been having severe wireless connectivity issues on my laptop since Windows updated. completely dropping from the network and data rates dropping so low programs would come to a halt.
>Having had problems with shitty drivers affecting the speed of my network card when it was new, which were later patched in updated drivers, assume it may be that a generic driver is to blame.
>Decide to use the driver rollback on Windows' Device Manager to hopefully rollback to a working version, assuming I can just update again if it's not fixed.
>As soon as I do this, Windows bluescreens for the first time ever since owning the laptop.
>"Something Happened"
>Crashes on boot every time, causing a bootloop.
>Decide I'm too annoyed to deal with this right now, Windows' automatic recovery is doing fuck all, and just boot into old Arch partition instead.
>Update all my packages and reboot it.
>Try to start X but it's broken, only thing visible is mouse cursor and ghost of the TTY I started it with
>Troubleshoot for a while and eventually fix it.
>Various other things are slightly broken from lack of maintenance and updating.
>Easily troubleshoot and fix them, have an errorless system again in less than 30 mins.

Oh, so if I run say mpv URL1 and then mpv URL2 only mpv URL 1 would be saved?
>>
>>62078026
It's like downloading an .exe from somewhere. More creepy than the AUR where you at least compile the program yourself. Trust is everything.

A duplicate is a duplicate when the whole line is the same as the last line, so no, both commands will be saved.

No, IS to emphasis how friendly the thread is.
You're confusing it with I.S. = Islamic State.
