it's bullshit, if it were a case of intel using less glue on the ihs to get 10c+ better temps in some cases they'd do it, they're not intentionally trying to gimp their chips

cpus can either be flat, concave or convex and in the case of intel they're usually concave, pic related is two bastardised pics from google images but if you're curious for more information you should find plenty of articles discussing the pros or cons of using concave/convex, coincidentally lapping is a thing to try and get cpus flat and it barely shaves a few degrees off of the chip after removing some amount of material and getting a mirror polish shine exposing the copper the ihs is made of - delidding is the far superior destructive method to improve cooling performance

Why is my 1080Ti stable at one clock and voltage at 60C, but not at 85C? I'm changing the clock as the temp rises to cancel out ShitPU Boost 3.0 downclocking as it climbs in temperature, so at both temps they end up at the same clocks and volts.

I knew shit was more stable when cold, but does 25C really make that much difference?
>>
>>62052428
Troll physics. The IHS isn't perfectly flat to begin with and has some amount of flex. They need to guarantee a certain amount of leeway at the assembly line.

Low temperature solder has dramatically better performance vs. paste with the exact same bond line thickness, it's just more expensive. Which is why Intel doesn't use it on everything.

Also who the hell delids their CPU and then puts the stock heat spreader back on? That's just retarded.
>>

>>
>>62052923
>>
>>62052803
Gate leakage increases with temperature. Higher leakage = longer charge time at the same voltage = lower stable clock @ same.

Most chips seem to have a knee temperature where everything just goes to shit and you either see a sharp decrease in clock ceiling or need way more voltage to maintain. Exactly where that is differs case by case.

Never overvolt GPUs, it's easy to kill VRMs, get a degraded chip and probably a desoldered chip with Nvidia. Just overclocking is fine.

>>62053072
So Nvidia is smarter than me and it in theory should be fine to boost higher than stable when its cool?

Just because I've dialed in a clock and voltage I'm happy with, but I like to run my cards hot so they stay quiet. It means that I set my OC while it's at 85C or so, but then when I launch a game initially the card is at like 30C and clocks probably 39-52Mhz that it usually should. I have noticed once or twice it's crashed when cold, but I can't remember if it was at these settings.

I know the simple solution would be to just add another 0.12 of voltage, but I'd feel like Jensen would be cucking me if I did that.

>>62053181
Nvidia doesn't support proper overvolting anymore, they haven't since Kepler. It's all locked in the BIOS now, controlled by their shitty GPU Boost crap. 1080Ti will clock itself up to it's 1.093v cap on it's own if the cooler is good enough.

Can anyone else please answer this question?

I haven't been to /g/ in years. I remember back then there was a /g/eneral about Certifications and the such for networking and linux servers.

I've had many hurdles in life and stuck with a shit tier job. I just want to get something that will bring more money in, and make me feel better than where I am, a garbage tier job at a hardware store.

Someone please help. I checked the wiki, very sparse on info but at least a good base.

Just need some websites for certs, advice on goals and what to aim for to expand my portfolio, and I'll probably visit the Linux general to get advice for a beginning distro to relearn the basics of the basics.

THank you.

vibrations are coupling to the case, either harddrive or fans but most likely fans, just make sure the side panels are firmly attached and aren't loose

I had a problem a few years ago where a dodgy fan that shouldn't have been used horizontally was causing oscillation in the case, needed to use some rubber washers to try and soak up some of the vibrations until I replaced the fan

What? how? it has been some time i don't use windows at all and i never bothered to try W10 mostly due to all the bullshit microsoft is pulling but is this a thing? are you saying that Microsoft can lock you out of your own computer remotely (i guess you still can boot a linux live media and grab your files back?)? was your license legit? or i'm reading wrong?

Having your microsoft account suspended shouldn't stop you from logging in. If someone other than microsoft got into your microsoft account they can change the password remotely, if so, do a reset.

You don't need a crossfire compatible board for a 7990 or other dual GPU single card. Power isn't a motherboard issue either.
>>
>>62055581
>Power isn't a motherboard issue either.
Well, it sort of is since GPUs do usually draw some power from the PCI-E slot, but most any motherboard a person would be interested in putting a GPU like that in would easily send the 75w or whatever it needs.

So does this have anything to do with me or is it just a coincidence?
I don't have an instagram account myself btw, and i don't talk to these girls.

Ok so I just started using QEMU. I'm using AQEMU as a graphical frontend and I've run into a problem. The video memory is super low, 16MB I think. XFCE lags on it in an OpenBSD VM. I'm using Fedora as the host OS. I know there's got to be some kind of config files I can edit to change the settings to bump it up to 64MB but I don't know where it is or what it's called. It can be a configuration file for the specific VM, but preferably I'd like to change it universally so that every time I make a new VM it'll default to 64MB of video memory.

TLDR I want to increase video memory on QEMU and I don't know how.

what is it with Kepler that everyone says it got shit over time? as someone on a 750 ti, am looking at upgrades, and there are a fair amount of 770 & 780 (ti) on the used market, but anytime is bring up the possibility, whether it be skype, slack, discord, myspace, 4chan, even in person, people immediately shit all over Kepler.
I don't care for resolutions beyond 1920x1080, heck, I'm still on 1440x900, and as such not too bothered by anything over 70Hz, I just want smoother frame rates and being able to turn settings up in anything

Why not fix it before asking?
It's an easy procedure, and unless you've got a literal -4 modifier on your dexterity then you'll do fine.
Use tiniest pliers you've got around, or a toothpick, or something.
Just be fucking careful and try to not make it any worse okay.

Unless I misunderstood your question and you took the photo before installing heatsink and are now contemplating disassembling the whole thing, then:
1. you should include this info in your post
2. there's good odds this is the root of the problem, but not guaranteed it's the only issue you've got (by the picture it looks like it should still connect, weird angle you've got there);
If you ask me - go ahead and fix it (or get someone else to fix it if you're afraid or 've got fat fingers or whatever)
And again - be fucking careful. Shit's fragile.
>>
>>62056805

There's a lot of unknowns here. Why are you stagnating? How's the pay compare for the two jobs, and would going for one job or sticking with what you got potentially bankrupt you/leave you destitute? What does "about to make it big" even mean? Do you mean it's been "about" to grow for the past 3 years, or you've been with them for 3 years and it just now seems like "they're about to make it big"?

Really would need to know all this before I could give any advice that might be decent. But scientific coding sounds like a better use of your time overall, ignoring other factors.

>>62059967
Things you program with basically are grouped into text editors and IDE's.

Text editors are designed to make the mechanical process of writing and editing text as fast as possible. Any one worth its salt will usually have a robust set of plugins available (official or community created) for you to modify its behavior as little or as much as you want. Use enough plugins and it basically becomes an IDE. Examples:
>vim/gvim/neovim, king of text editors, worth learning sometime but maybe not at first
>Sublime Text, fast smooth and pretty, closed source and bugs you for a licence (you can ignore it forever or pay 70 burgers or try using the key in the CIA dump, it worked a few months ago), plugins written in Python
>Atom, the open source clone of Sublime from GitHub, written in JS, plugins use JS, rendered with Electron so not as responsive as Sublime
>VSCode, another free Sublime clone but from Microsoft that probably works great with MS languages, heard it's faster than Atom but slower than Sublime

IDEs are designed to make the process of developing complicated software as painless as possible. They understand how the language they're designed for works so they can do things like clicking a line to add a breakpoint for your debugger or have a sidebar with a list of all the functions in this file colored by return type and that updates as you type. Examples:
>emacs, king of IDEs, don't have personal experience but my understanding is nothing else is really comparable in terms of sheer power/flexibility once you embrace the autism
>visual studio 20xx, the photoshop of windows C++ and C# development
>Eclipse (open source, recommended for Android development) or IntelliJ (had a pretty good experience iirc, think there's a student edition?), the go-to Java IDEs
>PyCharm (again, student edition?) for python, know some people who swear it's amazing
>WingIDE 101 (student edition) is a simpler Python IDE

Personally, I use Sublime and vim daily for python/bash/js.

Where did all of you learn it, right now I'm using the tutorials on http://www.cplusplus.com/
Mildly related question, why do so many places refuse to teach c++? pic related is how I feel

I think >>62060240 does a really good job of giving you a high level of the different tools you'll use. I'd say do a few little projects or exercises in the language of your choice and notepad++ and then take the time to try learning either an IDE in your language or a text editor of your choice. I'd suggest learning vim over anything else, just because you'll find vi/vim on basically anything that has a *nix. Using the modal editing feels so wonderful once you get it, too. The easiest way to get started on this is to run vimtutor on a system with vim. It'll take you to an interactive help document which will explain most of the core motions / keys for you.

In terms of IDE's, I really like anything made by JetBrains. They all have pretty robust free versions and their subscription for the real deal is incredibly reasonable per year. I use PyCharm for a lot of my personal python projects... and the professional edition makes a lot of small things much easier, like profiling.

You can't go wrong. Just scratch your own itch and have fun.

if you have another means of remote access, like with webmin or telnet or something, sure

yes, if it's behind a NAT, you need to forward port 22 (default)

>Why do so many places refuse to teach c++?
I don't know but I hope it's because people are realizing C++ is gay as FUCK
Like, if you want to have something that you can develop in reasonably fast and that runs pretty fast and is object-oriented but not insane in terms of covering your ass when it comes to memory bugs, Java is your friend
And if you need your shit to be FAST fast and you are familiar with covering your ass, C gives you less rope to hang yourself with
And if you need your shit to be FAST fast and you don't feel confident about covering your own ass but you're ok with taking the time to learn a system that will cover it for you, Rust is there
And if you don't care about speed too much and only want to be able to develop fast / be able to knock out complex or domain specific concepts in a few lines as possible, you can pick from any number of languages that fit your use case like python, clojure, go, haskell, matlab, R, ES6, etc.

I feel like C++'s big territory right now is literally just windows gaming and GPU programming. Web apps have largely replaced native apps anywhere realtime performance isn't a requirement - they're easier to make crossplatform, easier to update, and easier to hire for at this point.

When you use a password to unencrypted a zip file what is actually happening? Like does the password become an ASCII XOR key that XORs each bit of the file in blocks as long as the password? Is it a block cipher always? If you had only half of a long password couldn't you see the first few bits correctly decrypted?

wordpress is a framework to support themeing and plugins so that you don't have to screw around with application codes. Relative normies can get their own websites running that way.

Sometimes firefox uses 100% of CPU when visiting some sites, I have Ublock origins and NoScript enabled.
That remains even after closing the tab.
Could it be because of partial blocking of JS scripts?
Or because it's pinned tab?

>When you use a password to unencrypted a zip file what is actually happening?
Nothing, it not encrypted >.<
But seriously, it depends on the encryption scheme. Don't use zip encryption, it is broken.
But in general:
>Like does the password become an ASCII XOR key that XORs each bit of the file in blocks as long as the password?
Not ASCII (see below) but basic symmetric block cypeher encryption is like that. Zip uses symmetric encryption.
>Is it a block cipher always?
Zip is but there are other constructions.
>If you had only half of a long password couldn't you see the first few bits correctly decrypted?
Nopers. Passwords aren't genelly used directly they are fed into a password-based-key-deriviation-function to get the actual key.

My up-to-date Firefox browser has been randomly going up to 99% disk usage, slowing it down and freezing for seconds. It is very annoying. I tried ~10 programming languages and the ones i found interesting were C#, C++ and javascript.
Now i want to actually get good with at least 2 of those, but i have no idea where to start.
I can make programs, but without stackoverflow i'm useless.
I think i'll start with C#, since it handles cross platform decently with mono, but i just don't know how to take advantage of all the functions in the framework.
Should i read a book? Online tutorials will only tell you what for loops are.

1 year old. I will do that. It is strange that it seems connected to high graphical usage. I updated the drivers but it didn't fix anything.
>>
>>62061360
Var exists within the function is is created in.
Let exists within the { } enclosure it is created in.
Like when you do a For loop, you define a variable that only exists within that loop. This is what Let does.
Unless you are optimizing memory, just use Var.

>>62061392
I'll give it a shot.
>>
>>62060982
well, with the two I listed, it's a way to make them a tad cheaper I think.

>>
>>62061403
Thanks, I'll just do that then. I was just looking at all the examples on Mozilla's MDN and they almost exclusively use 'let'.

>I can make programs, but without stackoverflow i'm useless.
This is the case for everyone, yes even professional programmers. If you already know how to use the languages just build shit with lots of googling and looking at the docs of the libraries you are using. Read some blog posts by people who did similar things and steal their good ideas. You gotta build your back of tricks, I mean specialist knowledge, up.
