Mint and Ubuntu are both fine. Just install the one you think looks better. Ubuntu has more bloat but it werks and gets you going with linux. I think MInt is also one of those it just werks distros but I've never tried it.

Keep in mind that essentially you can do almost everything on almost every distro. Some things are easier on one distro and some are harder. Keep browising Linux threads to get interested in new stuff. You'll probably end up distro hopping because you want to try out different stuff and at some point settle for what works for you.

Ubuntu is not that stable as everybody is shilling it to be. You start to understand that only when you use openPEPE, Debian or Slackware long enough.
Xfce is obsolete and Thunar is shit. There is no reason to use it instead of Ge-Nome if your PC is not a patato.

Ubuntu with the GNOME desktop environment is easy to setup and use for day to day basis things.

I use it as my main OS and it can run 2/3 of my game library on Steam. (The other 1/3 is shit like DLC Quest anyways.) And for all the other games I just boot into my Windows.

I've been having fun with it so far and I think you would too.

Whatever flavor of ubuntu you want, you can install cinnamon or mate later if you like Mint.

Personally, I rather like kde neon, it's just ubuntu but with the latest kde version.

Honestly, your best bet starting is anything with a package manager with a dependency resolver built into the manager (IE: debian/ubuntu apt-get)

Dude just go balls deep and install gentoo. I don't think anything captures the essence of GNU/Linux better than Gentoo does.

Gentoo is ultimately what separates the Linux lovers from the haters. I've found that people who don't like Gentoo (and use something like Ubuntu or Mint instead) eventually end up leaving Linux for various reasons, like "Can't play muh vidya" or "don't know how to open a .exe". But those who are able to appreciate Gentoo love Linux for life.

Go ahead and install Debian on a flash drive or a VM. It's what ubuntu is based off of. Learn as you go: between the Debian wiki, user manuals on the Debian website, and man pages there is no shortage of information available to answer any question.

As a recent Windows-Linux tranny myself, I can tell you that the idea of packages is a bit jarring at first, but I now like it much more than the clusterfuck that is managing installed windows software.

Try Ubuntu MATE and Mint MATE. Both are excellent. Cinnamon is a bit broken at the moment, but mate is fucking solid and has that familiar windows feel to ease your transition.

can some tell me if it is possible to develop windows apps on linux? it is the only thing that keeps me from using it.
