LineageOS might help. I got Android 7 on S3 thanks to it. It's not available for all phones, and there might be problems, but mine's working good after few twicks in options. Before that I had CM 13. I also had to install some custom bootloader or something called TWRP before that.

Why would you want to update? 4.4 is the best version of Android.
