So xterm -fa 22 works
but if I add xterm:faceSize:22 to Xresources
and merge, that doesn't. I can change the background of an xterm terminal with xterm resources, however that only comes into effect when I launch a new terminal with the xterm command. If I use i3 MOD+ENTER, I get a white xterm terminal, but opening an additional xterm terminal via command gives me one of the color specified in xresources.

I'm confused about the different categories of cache misses
Assuming a direct cache, if you access a location X that has never been accessed before, that's a compulsory miss, right?
Even if the cache block that X maps to already has something in it from an earlier access to Y, that just happened to map to the same cache block, it's still a compulsory miss, instead of a conflict miss.

How are Git comments meant to be used?
On the one hand, I don't want to add each file separately to the index, giving each one a unique comment, that sounds like it'd take ages on large projects.
On the other, I don't know if adding all the files to the index each with the same comment is any better.
How is it meant to work?

You're supposed to commit message what you did. Commits are supposed to be logically separate pieces of work. It doesn't matter if it's in one file or several.

If you do a days work and change a load of files to change the database implementation you use, and you also add a new class to extend the program functionality. Commit them separately in 2 commits. Both with sensible commit messages.

Then when your project leader changes his mind and wants to undo the change you made to the database provider and go back to the old one you just find that work with your descriptive commit message, and
git revert
it. All the lines in files that you changed to change over the database provider get changed back but that new class you wrote on the same day is left there.

Make each commit so that when you revert it it undoes what you said it does in the commit message.

That's how it's supposed to work for non-CLI programs. You can append an & at the end of the command you used to spawn the program though and allow it to exist without the terminal emulator. Maybe even "& exit" to also automatically close the terminal emulator window. Take a look at dmenu though, in case you already haven't.

Put an SSD in it and it's still a perfectly usable laptop.

If that's really not palatable to you then you can consider getting a bargain bin 32GB SSD from China, installing a beginner-friendly distro onto it and donating it to a destitute college kid. Because that would still be a kickass school machine, especially for someone from a broke family who can barely afford ramen. Keep the 500GB drive to stick into an enclosure and make your own portable external HDD.
>>
>>62040289
LTSB is only used by faggots who know windows 10 is complete garbage but want to force themselves to use it anyways despite prior knowledge. Get 7 Ultimate, W10 offers absolutely nothing you need unless you're one of those game junkies that likes taking it up the ass from Microsoft.

No, LTSB is for when your PC has no drivers for 7(90% of time is because there are no Wifi drivers for that laptop or chipset stuff is wonky with 7 and people dont want to bother to fix it or dont know how).

Other than that 7 ultimate is the best option.

>>
>>62040590
Okay first off that is just a fancy rebadge of their normal MyPassport stuff made to dupe retarded gamebros into buying overpriced goods just because it says GAMER on it. Second, there's no good reason you should even be running games off an external even if it's just a drive enclosure. It's going to rattle like shit and definitely will be slow as hell because it's not plugged directly to your motherboard for full speed. If you're just storing game installers and backups that's okay, but don't run your games off of something that was never meant to handle the load.

>>
>>62039799
Shitty proxy can add shitty content to your website content, that's it.
Pretty sure that it can't happen over https, though.

As for the identity, when you get logged on a website from a given IP and the website has shitty security (for example, non-secure channel for one kind of data), someone else using the same proxy could appear as logged on with your credentials.
Once again, this shouldn't be possible with https, since only you have the proper keys and anyone else will only get garbage.

No your phone only charges from the fastest solution connected to it and in actuality wireless chargers are slow as hell.
If you got Android and want your phone to charge quickly get a cable and adapter made specifically for fast charge, which Galaxy phones include out the box. In fact, you should always be using the set that comes with your phone because 9/10 times it's the one that actually charges your phone the fastest. You can also turn airplane mode on or shut down your phone while it's charging so it doesn't use the battery while charging.

16-bit programs can't run in 64-bit OSes, can they? I know it came up as an issue when I was trying to run Rance 4.1/4.2 for example, and some other old eroge I found. Used a VM in those cases but sometimes that has unwanted side effects like audio being corrupted and bad sounding

Hey, I'm trying to use a VM as a dev server because I don't wanna install a bunch of DB backends and stuff on my everyday machine.

Now, I have to be able to access the web server of the VM, and here's where it gets annoying.

I'm using QEMU and have set up port redirection, (port 1024 of the host to port 80 of the guest).

Typing localhost:1024 or 127.0.0.1:1024 in a browser on the host machine fails with a "connection was reset", but typing 192.168.0.x:1024 (hosts IP) in a browser on another machine, connects like it should.

Basically, "third machine -> host -> guest" works, but only "host -> guest" doesn't.

What's the deal here?

In terms of cryptology opsec, when part of my password could possible be considered compromised, would adding further new segments (aka enlarging said password) make it secure again/proof it against bruteforcing attacks even when the attacker knew about said compromised parts/characters already? What if the characters were re-arranged by me in the new password?
>>
>>62041280
>>62041280
*possibly

Goddamn should have proofread that

Also by "re-arranging" i basically mean keeping the old segments but just placing them at different sections of the new password, especially creating a whole new cypher/combination

Just asking since i don't know if this measure would defeat any theoretical future bruteforce attempts or if that part of the password would be compromised forever

You buy a training kit. The first stage is a bowl of litter that just sits on the toilet rim. Eventually the cat cares less about hitting the litter and more about just squatting and doing the deed. Then you remove the last stage and leave the toilet lid up.

Suppose your compromised part is "spoon". They could do the bruteforcing only for passwords containing "spoon", which drastically cuts down the time required to crack. For instance, a 12-character password with numbers+letters allowed has 3.2E21 combinations, but if they know 5 of the characters are "spoon" in a sequence, then it's just 2.8E13 if my math's right. That's still huge, but way smaller. But salts are a thing so I wouldn't worry too much about this.

>>
>>62036761

Double-check on your own textbook, but I think compulsory miss refers to "requesting from an empty cache block". It's not the "requesting X for the first time" that's significant; it's just that, naturally, if X has been requested before, its cache block wouldn't be empty. But Y can fill the cache, too. So X vs Y is still a conflict miss.

Can someone answer this? Would i be better off enlarging the partially compromised password (adding further segments to it) or should i start off from scratch again? Thing is these are a bitch to memorize and i'd hate to have to do it all over again
>>
>>62042439

Also i reckon this applies to both plain words found in dictionaries and sequences of numbers/random letters, i.e. it makes no difference cryptographically speaking since the sequence itself would be compromised all the same

If your password has been compromised you need a entirely new password that has NOTHING related to the new password. Yeah its sucks but adding on to the compromised one is pointless

So, I fell for the VM GPU passthrough meme. I've spent the last three days trying to figure this shit out, reading through at least a dozen different guides, how-tos and tutorials. I've made sure all my hardware is capable of virtualization/IOMMU/whatever. Everything is set up and configured correctly.
I use virt-manager, and whenever I create a virtual machine with UEFI as the firmware I get stuck at the EFI shell. No fs0 device shows up, just BLK0, 1, 2. I've tried two different Windows 10 isos and a 7 iso. This shit is frustrating.
The one thing I haven't tried yet is to use Rufus to make a bootable UEFI pendrive out of one of those images, but it's almost fucking 6 AM and I just want to sleep. Anyone have any opinions and/or solutions on this? I probably won't respond, but I'll check the archive when I wake up.

It would be much clearer as a block of data - dictionary or something like that.
Also, huge walls of text not divided into functions can't be reused well and are a pain to maintain.

Imagine if all those cases changed a single variable which you want to change the type of or replace by another variable but only in those cases.
You're forced to rely on search+replace, which may often include those cases you want to skip.

can't tell if trolling but in case not: if the attacker knows any character in the new password, it makes it easier (although if it's just one letter, the degree that it's easier is basically negligible) to crack. you can reuse numbers but if you really want to be anal about it, use different numbers in different positions (i.e. if first password is 'sp00n' don't make the new password 'fi13s' or something.) again the difference is basically negligible but it seems like you want every inch you can get, so there you go.

>>
>>62043674
Vague. Not sure what you mean by
>finding shit
But you run similar risks with both. Directly downloading from a website means from your ip you ask that server for a file, if that site gets in the hands of crafty copyright lawyers they can usually find you and will send you a letter. Torrenting is where you, from your IP, ask a server for the location of sources (peers) who might let you download parts of a file from. As a peer you are given the IP addresses of all other peers and if you are a crafty copyright lawyer you can then collect them and send out letters with fines. Since torrenting is more complex and "safer" many networks opt to just ban it outright, or heavily monitor it. Its rare to get a letter from a lawyer, it really depends on how much your government regulates your internet.
For anime at least you should try downloading it over the IRC from a sub group. HorribleSubs runs one and its obscure enough that the downloads are pretty safe.

To explain some more, I was mostly referring to increasing idle time with the screen locked. I know of the basics you mention but it seems something is draining the battery more than it should when the phone is doing nothing. I already have it to only do app updates when in the charger. Besides, wifi drains less than 3g/4g doesn't it?

Sadly the android battery manager give no good information on what's going on.

So she pulled out the power cord and now the internet LED won't come on, the WAN, power, everything else needed will come on except the internet. Why would taking out the power cause the internet to not work. I've tried to reset it but the led still won't come on. I'm so pissed off

Sometimes devices just fucking die when they lose power. I'm guessing it happens during some random critical time when it does something that shouldn't be interrupted, other than firmware updates that is.

I bought a Chromebook for school about a year ago. I figured I could use it for my first year of university, but now that I'm in, I tested out of my core math classes and am finding that the Chromebook isn't cutting the mustard for computer science. I have GalliumOS installed, but internal audio doesn't work and I hate the "PLEASE FACTORY RESET YOUR CHROMEBOOK" screen that always shows up on boot.
We have computer labs, but they have weird hours and we would have to work off of an external hard drive or use an online IDE, which at that point I might as well just use the Chromebook.
I'd just like a painless way to run Eclipse offline. I know a lot of people don't like it, but it's what the professor is willing to offer support for.
Should I buy a refurbished T420 and call it a day?

Installing everything so that it "just werks" is a bit over my head right now. The most experience I have in Linux is using Ubuntu and the most experience I have in programming is making extremely simple Python projects over a few summers (Nothing more complicated than basic math functions and fizzbuzz).

I'm feeling dumb as shit right now. Last few times I went to enter the password for my windows 7 install I realized it was purely muscle memory from years of the same password. Sure enough this morning my fingers forgot and tried to enter it manually so now I'm locked out. Any way back in? I was looking at bootable password reset/crackers but wondered which virus you guys suggest I install.

Is there a better android image viewer than QuickPic? I heard there was a community version I think I saw had a google+ community, but I don't know what it adds or anything.

At this point the only complaints I remember having are wanting the google drive integration and etc. removed, and also to load all thumbnails at once. I accidentally cleared my QuickPic cache and now have to manually scroll through 15k+ images to load the thumbnsails for the first time. Not cool.

so i have a 2y/o asus zenbook UX303L. It had 4gb ram built-in, but i noticed that my memory was always rather full, so i decided to upgrade my memory.
Apparently the laptop has a 4gb module soldered on, as well as an empty SoDIMM slot. thus i bought a 4gb ram module.
i got it today and inserted it into the SoDIMM slot, that was indeed empty.
however, when i booted the laptop, it still said 4gb (I used speccy and windows task manager to check. pic related).
Does it turn off the soldered-on RAM when I insert another module? In other words, did i just upgrade my 4gb ram to 4gb ram?
did i play myself?

Lost my job to offshore. Started with application monitoring in Unix but my whole group kept getting moved to menial and non-tech related tasks. For 5 years, I kept asking if I could do additional tasks such as clean file systems and was turned down. In fact, the entire company is shifting more towards H1Bs and offshore.

My question is should I continue to try to work in technology or say fuck it and change careers?

Fuck this shit, all I want to do is lift the Users folder in its entirety from my PC hard drive to my external hard drive. Is that so much to ask?

Is there a way to either set an xcopy option that copies absolutely everything regardless, or else run a cmd that strips all my User files of special permissions/status so that I can then run an xcopy that is free to copy everything?

Reposting from /SPG/ where it didn't get any help:

My dad's Verizon LG G3 broke. Usually when you press the power button to turn it on it does nothing, however if you take the battery out for long enough, it'll get 20s through the boot process and then shut off.

Any ideas about what could be at play? He thinks it's the battery so I ordered him a new one for a few bucks but I'm almost certain that's not it

Is it time to look for a new phone for him?

Yes just have the same key(transfer it with scp or something) on them and configure it to use if with the HostKey directive in sshd_config
I do this all the time at work where I have a DNS round robin to multiple hosts that people need to ssh to

>>62050252
A faulty power button wouldn't explain why it's shutting off soon after starting to boot. It's not a constant time that it shuts off after. Sometimes it gets out of the bootloader, sometimes it doesn't.
>>
>>62050330
Ah, well, but it does. The fact that it's connecting improperly might cause it to turn off immediatly, or be useable for a few minutes.
It's usually not completely broken.
However, mine started to reboot as well after it shut down.

Hey /g/entochan, I need to open certain combinations of udp and tcp ports on my router and close everything else using Iptables.

iptables -I FORWARD 2 -p udp -m multiport --dports 80,443,53,3478,3479,5060,5062,6250,12000:64000 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD 3 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD 4 -j DROP[/quote]

Sorry, I'm pretty new to this. How are host keys different from the ones you place in /username/.ssh?
>>
>>62050489
Why are you forewarding everything?
DENY all incoming then allow the ports you want open
>>
>>62050543
Yeah, the ones in your home directory are your private keys for authorization on remote systems. On the remote host, you'll place your public key as an authorized key. This allows key-based sshing which uses your private keys in lieu of a password
>>
>>62050586
Thanks.
>>
>>62050546
I'm just following the format of this chain which definitely works (meaning it blocks any traffic on any other port):

iptables -I FORWARD 1 -p tcp -m multiport --dports 21,80,443 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD 2 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD 3 -j DROP

Why does this chain work and mine not?
>>
>>62050631
Are you using your pc as a gateway? Or is this just a single use on one host?
Foreward isnt really what you want to use unless you're acting as a gateway which you are connecting all your other machines to.

Make a chain for incoming and set it to deny then put what ports you want to be allowed as accepted.

How do you deal with being roasted at a job interview?

I graduated in June and since then I had two IT jobs interviews only. One went pretty well, but they needed someone more experience (that was even clear to me after they described that you need to be able to fix things 24/7 if shit gets broken). So they recommended me a supposedly more "junior-appropriate" position instead and I fucked up that interview so badly that at this point I hope they don't accept me because it would be so humiliating to see them again. Like completely basic things like what are smart pointers, what are the new features in C++11, why is singleton an anti-pattern etc... I actually knew how to answer most of it after I thought about it afterwards (after the interview) but I was so stressed out because I already demonstrated my incompetence by exiting the elevator on the wrong floor and not realizing it for 10 minutes.

I've never gotten a virus on my windows 7 machine, but it seems that about every 6 months or so, it seems to get kind of retarded at different tasks and a fresh install of windows 7 is what I end up doing to bring it back to speed.

Does anyone know why the OS tends to get shitty after a while? Also has anyone experienced this issue with windows 10? If you've had windows 10 on a machine you use a lot for more than a year, and have never noticed a slow down of general operation, please let me know your experience.
