If RAM is just temporary memory, why cant you use a hard drive as RAM to have more than 1TB RAM?
>>62033458
You can, which is what swapping essentially is. The problem, however, is that disks are a lot slower than RAM, by a factor of several hundred thousands.
>>62033458
You can, it's called swap memory and it is slow. Remember the nvidia 3,5 gigs of ram scandal? Like that but even slower
>>62033479
Why dont you use a SSD then?
>>62033503
I am talking about SSDs, even SSDs are a lot slower than RAM.
There are stuff like battery-backed RAM that speed up things a bit, but they're still quite slow because of the memory bus being faster than the IO bus (usually PCIe).
>>62033503
Are you fucking serious? Even they are like 1/10th of RAM
Development is headed in the exact opposite direction OP. HDDS are becoming more like RAM, see nv-dimm

Not entirely true, Intel's 3D XPoint technology improves NVM speeds by a lot, nearly as fast as RAM. And several NVMe SSDs have a extension that allow you to memory map the entire disk, rather than just being a block device.
ReadyBoost users don't have this problem.
