What's wrong with BSD on a laptop?
>>
>>62033843
freebsd devs dont even run their own system on their laptops, but openbsd devs do - so it's more likely to have laptop drivers. plus you'll probably find yourself compiling a lot from source, so the lower end hardware and heat dissapation may slow things down.

why are you like this? i'm trying to say that openbsd is often much better on laptops due to the devs using it on their own, but the only thing you can come out with is 'werks for me' and 'who cares, as long as it werks for me :DD'. is it so hard to understand the differences between individual cases & generalisations?

I did that and disabled most of the features and made everything I could a module.
The kernel is 3.7M on disk, the system still somehow eats up 18M when I boot with the `init=/bin/sh` kernel parameter.
I put the names of the modules that were being used while the system was running normally in a file and loaded them when I booted up with just sh as the only process and the RAM usage went up from 18M to 27.6M!
I guess I don't need every one of those modules, but still.
Pic related runs gentoo with xorg and a wm and 3 terminal emulators and somehow his RAM usage is only 24M!
How is this achieved?

RUN_COMPILER_DIR=${RUN_COMPILER_DIR:-/var/lib/sorcery/build}

>>62035005
I don't think Source Mage has global options like that and I'm not using sorcery to compile the kernel anyway, just plain old `make nconfig`, `make`, `cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-<ver>` and `make modules_install`.
Shouldn't I be able to pass those options while building the kernel like that?
>>
>>62034882
I have A solution for the media keys, but I'll wait a bit and see if anyone has a better (more standard?) answer.
However, I'm curious what windows you're talking about that you can't destroy with your ctrl+alt+q hotkey. The only windows I've ever run into in i3 which wouldn't close from my hotkeys are windows which were broken/frozen
>>
>>62035094
those options are right in menuconfig
>>
>>62035113
Well, like I said >>62034844
I know I disabled virtual machine drivers and I disabled support for initramfs because I don't need it.
>>
>>62035153
it may not be the issue of the kernel. it's all well and good disabling lots of shit on 1 program, but do all the rest have lots of options you don't need enabled and built with optimize for size?
>>
>>62035186
I'll see what I can do about other programs later, but when I boot with `init=/bin/sh`, the only program running besides the kernel is sh (according to htop at least).
And system RAM usage while having only sh+htop running besiedes the kernel is basically kernel RAM usage.
And like I said here >>62034668, kernel alone uses ~18M, kernel+modules (maybe I don't need all of them) is ~27M.
>>

Might be a problem with your system tray because some applications like discord catch the kill signal and minimize instead. For me it minimizes to the system tray when I close it.

There also might be an option to disable that in discords settings if you would rather the whole application just die instead of minimize.
>>
>>62035387
i don't know much about that system im afraid. you should put "CFLAGS=-Os" in the command to make it build with optimized for size. if that's the correct command for that option. but from what i know that looks fine.
>>
>>62035292
Kernel lets you specify what process it executes as init.
If you put a shell there it will run it as root which is usually done to rescue your system. It's also a reason to consider full disk encryption, since otherwise anyone can modify the boot process and gain root access easily.

>>62035321
Dash is bad for interactive use since it lacks history, command completion, and some other conveniences. Use dash for scripts and bash/ksh/zsh for interactive use.

Then you might be better off using busybox.
The busybox shell is a modified (d)ash with command completion and history (I think) and since busybox comes as a single executable you will save some memory because the program code will be loaded only once and shared between all running utilities.

are you actually planning to use this system or is it just for fun getting the memory footprint really low?

It's more for fun, I want to get the memory usage as low as possible, but I also want to have a useable system.
I need stuff like snd_hda_intel, i915 and iwlwifi.
I know I could just disable almost everything, but what's the point if it renders the system unusable?

Has anyone noticed the weird behaviour the networkmanager has against wifi cards and especially the intel ones?
The latest debian, stretch, that i've been using since it was testing, has had network manager dying, the service, and the userspace program reported "device not ready".
This problem exists in all my streatch installations, atk9k cards have it too, but the intel ones have tremendous latency when connected, so I presume that the network manager has some serious unresolved issue.
There hasn't been any fuzz around this problem, so i assume that this is exclusive to debian.
I know the card or the driver are not dead since I use command line to connect to networks or sometime wicd, which works fine.
Has anyone seen this problem with networkmanager?
I've tried irc but pretty much is dead. I didn't find any relevant bug report because i didn't know how to seaech this particular issue. Also the kernel only informs me that I couldn't connect to the network.

I have an Asus X552C laptop, with a Mediatek MTE730E WiFi+Bluetooth Combo that's giving me problems since forever (before with Windows, now with Ubuntu). My machine is double boot (Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 16.04, I need both OS), so another /g/entooman here at /fglt/ told me that to replace it with a linux-compatible one I should get something Atheros. So, guys, what would be the best model for it? Something that's available on Amazon (so I'm sure I can get it in Italy), is compatible with the rest and doesn't cost too much, if possible.

Spent hours trying to install Linux mint on my shitty netbook and got it to boot from USB. The piece of shit is using uefi shit that took forever to get working.
But keyboard doesn't work (no USB keyboard where I'm at right now, only laptop)

Wi-Fi doesn't work and I've spent hours trying to install the fuckers with offline packages without results.

Each time I try to install on a partition it tells me grubi32.efi missing and installation stops.

I read plenty of guides and wikis but most of them did not work. It is a laptop known to have plenty of trouble installing linux. It is an asus x205TA with eMMC storage.

The partitions are like this:
1: UEFI windows boot manager
2: Win10
(these are the two default partitions)
3: FAT32 with grub2 installed (this is from one of the guides)
4: partition intended for linux

I can't use ethernet on this laptop, the keyboard isn't working so I am using the on-screen keyboard.

When installing I have tried the UEFI and FAT32 as boot, and the fourth partition as ext4 and "/" for mount point.

Read the fucking UEFI instructions on the Ubuntu Wiki. You are not doing this right. If you got this far, you can also figure out the rest. Clue: the boot partition is wrong.
I'll warn you, I don't dual boot, so I might be pointing you to that wiki when it's not the best thing to look at, but I followed it after having similar problems to yours and it worked first time.
>>62039922
I did that with Debian netinstall, it works fine, just follow instructions and install xorg and i3 and a couple of others that I don't remember. Check the new general, they'll explain it better.

Long time Gentoo user here. Never given much thought to NixOS but recently read some about it and it sounds interesting. Like for example
>I use some packages that require custom configure flags. NixOS's package system Nix hashes the instructions to build packages. This allows it to download binary versions of packages where there are no modifications, and locally build custom ones. This gives it a convenient compromise between all binary and all source distributions.
I had no idea you could use it like a source distro like Gentoo. So it has similar functionality to Gentoo's USE flags and how good does it work in comparison? If it has something like USE flags that works really well I might consider it. But on the other hand, I really don't like how it abandons hier traditional unix filesystem hierarchy.
>>
>>62035645
I managed to reduce the size of the kernel image to 2.7M.

/etc configs symlink too like for example /nix/store/s2sjbl85xnrc18rl4fhn56irkxqxyk4p-sshd_config
But more I read about it, it seems so cool that you can have a source system but also binary too and also each user can have their own packages that wont interfere with others.

I have almost no options in the BIOS, for the boot I can only change priorities, Secure boot is disabled. I can't change any UEFI/legacy settings at all.

Did I miss adding a /home and swap partition?
>>
>>62040402
As I said, I don't know about dual booting, other than that it's hit and miss and you should really take the OP advice and go all in.

What I had to do to get my UEFI system/GPT drive to work in Ubuntu (I have 1 system with a GPT drive and an old style BIOS and another with UEFI and a GPT drive and the same method worked on both) was to set up a 100mb /boot/efi partition as fat32 (at the start of the drive) and then a single / partition using the rest of the drive and it just werks. I don't use swap because I never need it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

No, don't fall for the meme and myths spreaders.
Learn what things are before believing crap you read on here. A "DE" (desktop environment) has a window manager. When you use X, you always use a window manager. You can install the window manager from a "DE".

Minimizing/maximizing is a window manager's job, it has nothing to do with a "DE". Those pretentious idiots use i3 and it's primarily a tiling window manager (supports floating and tabs though too) and that's why there's no need to minimize or drag windows. You can "get" dragging and maximizing even if you install "just a WM". You just have to install a floating/stacking window manager, because those are features their modus operandi offers.

Everytime I start using laptop+monitor, I have to "xset -b" because the shitty beep sound is back. When I'm using the laptop alone I don't have this problem because it's probably the first config I changed. How can I make the beep off persist with the monitor+laptop setup?

Is the goal of something like i3 to end up not using a mouse at all and be a wizard with keyboard shortcuts or is the mouse still used a lot anyway?

i have to use a laptop for reasons, and using keyboard is easier than using touchpads

It depends how far you want to go. Nobody is stopping you from using it to focus windows or drag shit around.
Though you can certainly eliminate a lot of the use of the mouse.
