Kindles only read mobi. It's a proprietary format, however I'm pretty sure the choice of mobi books the largest. Either way, you can convert other open formats like epub to mobi with something like Calibre. I've done this many times with great results.

I have a kindle and it works fine other than that I scratched the screen, so now light leaks through it and it's distracting. I'm sure it doesn't matter too much from whom you get it, as long as it isn't chink garbage off aliexpress. Kindle's only support azw3, but it is easy to convert epubs to it
