Low Budget "Network Attached Storage" Devices

Looking for something as cheap as possible with good (indepth) firmware. Ethernet interface only (no wireless needed).

Any recommendations?

>good firmware
lol

no consumer NAS has that. get a PC and slap some drives in it. Run the Linux or BSD of your choice on it.

That's what I'm doing at the moment. It's the power consumption that's the issue. Something tells a Raspberry Pi would do the trick best.

Looks interesting. I'll check it out.

I mean, you can do it. It'll be dog fucking slow, though. You'd need USB drives, and the ethernet port is also hanging off the USB bus. I wouldn't wanna try to scrub a ZFS or btrfs array on the thing.

RPis are fucking terrible as NAS boxes. The NIC (which isn't even GbE) and all four USB ports are multiplexed to the CPU via a single USB 2.0 line, so practical speeds are often in the single digits.

What other "small" form factor computers are there which have relatively low power consumption but also a decent drive and network interface?

Whatever ARM board that fits your needs + HDDs

In my case, that's Odroid XU4 + 2 HDD

If you don't mind doing it yourself, you can get a cheap HP Microserver (~200€ with Celeron) that has 4 positions for drives and two ethernet ports and ILO.

This!
Get an orange pi or another similar single-chip computer with an embedded Sata-port

Buy a cheap computer with a decent motherboard and also make sure that it has a decente ethernet port. The processor needs to be within 1.3-1.6Ghz (or more if you're retarded). Most people use old pentium's and stick shit tons of harddrives onto them.As for the OS I'd recommend either learning how to use FreeBSD or if you're just lazy run FreeNAS as there's nothing on linux that will be as good as FreeBSD for this use case.

I heard those heat up like motherfuckers when you stack too many of them together though, especially if you go for the case.
