What's the consensus on Smart TVs? I just bought one.
They're a meme and spy on you.

Enjoy your literal botnet
Infinitely inferior to the experience offered by the Apple TV.
>>62010095
Useless, keep the damn thing disconnected from internet and just use a PC
They are the literal representation of 1984's telescreen brought to life and people are actually buying them.
This society is fucked.

He's right. Smart tvs have malware basically preinstalled out of Hong Kong. Then they just sit there waiting to participate in a ddos without you ever knowing
theyre fine but hooking a pc up to the tv negates the smart features. using a remote control to access this content also fucking blows.
Tinfoil hat aficionados tend to forget that you don't have to connect it to wifi if you don't want to.
Anything above average nowadays is a smart tv and some apps that they come with are better than a stand alone device.
For example, my Sony 4K HDR TV's native Netflix app is better than the PS4 Pro's or Apple TV's Netflix apps.

Good luck finding a decent tv that isn't "smart".
>>62010263
this, besides its not like these units have cameras an mics

>R-Right?!
>>62010095
...software on the TV captures a subset of on-screen pixels every second that the TV is powered on. The pixel data is uploaded to the manufacturer over the network, and then matched with a database of TV, movie, and commercial content to figure out exactly what the user is watching...

They are getting difficult to avoid, but the support is pretty bad. You'll be lucky to get 2 years without needing to upgrade. Really, one should completely ignore it, and plug something like a Roku into it.
>>62010126
Can't do shit if you don't connect them to the internet. But its getting harder and harder to find a decent TV that doesn't include smart features.
>>62011097
How do they connect to the network if you don't allow them to access your router?
>>62011145
Through a cellular connection, the same way intel chips do.
>>62011156
Citation needed.
I gave up searching for a tv that isn't smart, way too little choice these days. Shit's comfy with plex set up though so that's nice.
>>62010095
>turn off dynamic contrast
>contrast still adjusts dynamically
hate this shit
>>62011203
There's really no choice to get a decent TV without Smart Features, but even a Roku Stick outperforms ever smart TV I've ever seen. If you have to use 4k, then you get a Roku Ultra or something. It's worth the extra money.
>>62010103
What the fuck would a smart tv spy you on?
>>62011228
Pretty sure some Samsung TVs had voice controls, and it was always listening.
>>62011226
I believe unless you go 60+ inch there's no point in 4K. It's literally a meme at this point, just a cash-grab aimed at normies. I have a chromecast I got in Japan, but since i can use Plex and netflix straight on tv I don't really use it at home. Also bravia supports casting and sync is nice to watch blurays on ps4, sometimes I borrow them from normie collegues.
>>62011226
What if i get that 4k Google cast thing, is it any good? And yes i do have a4k tv
>>62011487
Fuck if I know. I don't let Google products into my home. Feel free to do your own research.
>>62011476
It's not even really worth it at 60 inch, unless you are sitting pretty close to the screen.
Buy a Roku TV if you can
Unless you want a 4k tv
>>62011529
I have yet to see a Roku TV that looks and feels like a high quality TV. Most of them feel on par with my Olevia LCD TV that I purchased back in 2007 for 300 bucks.
>bought Samsung 55" uhd tv early 2016
>dont install standalone mic, tape off mic on remote
>smart-features and apps work really fast, menus scroll fluidly
>update, update, update
>end of 2016 everything runs like shit, apps like netflix have a hard time buffering, everything is a blurry mess
>look up "fix", see that you can buy an evolution-kit for 350€
>block tv from router, delete as much stuff as I can from tv, buy glorified 4k-blu ray player that is the Xbox one s
>other type of botnet but at least I can watch stuff on 4k again
I have a 48" Grundig HD TV in the bedroom that doesn't have any smart-features, I really like it
>>62011631
Why on earth would you use an Xbone X as your media center? You obviously weren't missing a bluray player, and there are better media centers available for less money and uses less electricity.
>>62011648
I didn't own a blu-ray player before, not even a proper DVD player (used a xbox360 for that).
Got the Xbox-bundle because it was the cheapest 4K-player around, was cheaper than the evo-kit, came with a game I wanted to play and it came with 2 controllers that I use to play games that are streamed to my bedroom-tv.
Ofc there are cheaper alternatives, I also have a fireTV-stick and a rpi with kodi, but I wanted the Xbox with the new controllers
Basically you could have bought a $400 TV with a $30 android box and ended up with something better.
>>62011808
I've heard that with the fire TV and kodi, you can get pretty much any channel for free. Could you explain how? Will it work for Roku? Kind of curious.
>>62011825
That's what I did for the bedroom-setup, yes, it works perfectly fine. If I had known that the Samsung goes from "perfectly fine" to unusable shit within a year I wouldn't have bought it either. There are forums that offer custom firmware that add functions and remove issues but meh.
>>62011885
There are plenty of "live TV" addons for kodi that are fairly easy to set up, yes. Don't know anything about roku tho.
>>62010095
A waste of money.
>>62011955
>plenty of "live TV" addons for kodi that are fairly easy to set up, yes
Ah. That wouldn't work for me. I keep 3rd shift hours. Thanks for the info, though.
