I can see your point really, but the thing is I'm not much of an audiophile at all. I want some good earphones, because I do make use of them often, but at the same time, is it worth it for me to spend £40 or £50 on a new pair, or just stick with buying them at half that price?

What's worse is I prefer having a mic, and that seems to add £10 to cost. I'm tempted to get the KZ's but a month is just so long and if I don't like them I can't be bothered sending them back to China.

>>62002328
There's just something off about my Piston Hybrid's. I swear they give me a headache listening to them too. The previous gen were fine, but honestly I have no idea what I'm talking about and don't even know how to properly compare 2 different earphones.
Want something in the Piston's place, a bit more bass but not too much. I watch a lot of animated stuff, classic Disney music, some pop-ish

These I can buy right now with free shipping. Should I get these or wait a few days and see if I can get the aluminum fazored ones for 20 bucks cheaper?
>>
>>62003536
Se-215s have a pretty extreme treble roll-off and upper mid suckout, which makes them sound "dark." They also use a single balanced armature driver on each side. BA's only work well in multiple sets imho, especially for bass where they usually have trouble producing low frequencies at high spls.

You may be more accustomed to larger amounts of bass too, and the dynamic driver of the htc-u11 is probably better at producing this bass as a whole.

I currently have Philips SHP9500S that I enjoy a lot, but I am going to college soon and I will be dorming with a roommate so I don't want to be using primarily open back headphones. Otherwise I like the sound and comfort a lot but I would prefer if they had a bit more bass.

I try to read these infographics but I'm scared about the comfort switch from SHP9500S to something else because it could make or break my next pair of headphones for me.

actually, I have been using my SE215 for years now, I really like them, but hearing them after using earphones that come free with my phone, just made them look bad in comparison.

are there any good in-ears that are natively USB-C or good wireless in-ears? I don't want to compromise on quality so they have to be noticably better than the SE215
>>
>>62003628
I'm just unsure if the aluminum fazored ones are better than the wood ones, or if there is really any reason to give consideration to that. Aesthetically, I don't have a preference, and as far as the sound goes, I'm certain either way what I'm getting for the price will be my personal end-game until they break or we invent headphones based on wormhole technology, or I can plug a USB cable into a dac chip embedded in my brain.

People selling on ebay are always selling used unless it's a certified aftermarket vendor. But used doesn't mean bad. Most of the time you can see if the seller has a good reputation, and if so, I really wouldn't worry about it. Plus ebay does offer buyer protection on all transactions, so if it doesn't work you can send it back and they'll refund your money.

For what it's worth, I've been buying shit off ebay for years and never had any issues with anything I've purchased.

Thank you for the recommendation.
Seems to be one to look out for, hadn't been on my radar before. Do the MEE audio M6 Pro's have good sound quality?
I looked at some reviews, some bashed the sound, others said it's mostly for stage use. I'll be using my earphones to watch a lot of shows and things on Youtube.
My past earphones have really just been Xiaomi Piston's and Xiaomi Hybrid's. The Piston 2's were my favourite, but I can't really find them online anymore.

£35 with mic doesn't seem bad, it's also as high as I'd go really. I've looked at the Soundmagic E10C's but they're £45

I'd like to hear some opinions on those HE-4XX from Massdrop, /hpg/. I'm curious about planar magnetics, but I already own a HD650 that I am happy with.
>>
>>62004824
Basically cheaper HE-400is. They sound like darker HD 650s with better bass and a wider soundstage.
>>
>>62004872
This, actually. This is a very fair and accurate assessment. The 400i hifimans are comparably neutral to the HD650s, although the HD650s are -slightly- more neutral (not that it matters unless you're doing audio engineering and need that analytical kind of sound). The 400i has better bass extension and warmer mids, making it sound more alive and pleasing for normal uses like gaming or movies and music.
>>
>>62004872
Better in the sub-bass region sounds nice since that's definitely where HD650s suffer most compared to my speakers, but if they're overall darker too it might be a bit much, HD650s already sound somewhat dark to me. Is it just more pronounced sub-bass which magnetics are "famous" for?
>>
>>62004930
But they say that HE-400i has some fancy treble.
>>
>>62004953
>>62004930
The treble is comparable to beyers (DT880). No value judgements, but anyone who doesn't like beyer treble should stay away from the 400i. I don't get why people call it dark or warm - it's not dark at all, it's in fact similar to the DT880 and HD800 in tonality.

It's a great headphone for the price and planar magnetics offer a lot of audible benefits over dynamic driver headphones.

The biggest issue they have is hifimans customer service. I'd put QC and built on the same league as other headphone manufacturers though. Let's be real here, every single headphone has some sort of build quality issue that's well known.
>>
>>62003722
Best portables if you don't mind bass. Default comfort is shit, so you need xl pads, which make them comfy. Cables are really nice, carrying case is nice. Best build, but it has a weak point - the screws that hold the earcups in place. If they receive too much stress, the ear pads will break off. They sound bassy, not overpowering, which still makes them good for most genres. The 'shadow' version is a fingerprint magnet and has a gaymer look, so I'd get matte. If you don't mind a brighter sound, msr7 is great, too

HD600. I own them, they do sound good no matter where I plug them.
An amp will sound only a little different, and your motherboard likely has an amp build in anyway. Most do these days.
>>
>>62007823
If your looking for something cheap/budget just get something like the e10k or fulla 2. Can plug them directly into your comp with usb.

I keep reading conflicted opinions on this. Also this isn't that I'm against buying an amp, but I wouldn't be able to get one right away if I get the HD600. In the meantime it's a bit dumb to throw 100-200 on less good headphones if in the end I regret not plunging for the HD600 right away.

>Would a HD598 need an amp otherwise?

I'm >>62007882, and I own HD598 too (I upgraded to HD600 from them).

Unlike the HD600, the HD598 do, due to their lower impedance, benefit massively from an amp. That's because some frequencies have vastly (think 6x) different impedance than others, and as the ratio between typical headphone outputs and the headphones is too low, the frequency response is greatly impacted by these impedance differences. These headphones somehow manage to sound quite different on each device I plug them to, and sound WAY better with an amp.

I know, I can't stand his reviews. He also says at the end of it that he thinks the he4xx "destroys" the m1060, and he likes to inflate himself by pointing out that he's a neuroscience major with his emphasis on human hearing, as if that mattered.

what's the best eq setup in Linux? I've used jack-rack +parametric eq plugins in the past, currently using qpaeq which works with pulse, but it is a graphic eq only
>>
>>62010610
If you can figure out how to get https://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/brutefir.html working system-wide in Linux I imagine that'd be the best option since Room EQ Wizard can export EQ filter settings as impulse responses for convolvers. I don't know if it's possible, but if you figure out how let us know.

Balanced is real. Whether it's worth it is another story. For a short cable, most likely not.

Hoping for something with a sound sig closer to balanced (these Xiaomis are a bit bright) but it's not too important.

Idk I listen to a bit of everything

I have never had a good pair of headphones before. At the moment I use some very old soundmagic IEMs which are losing their magic. I looked into headphones once and it was confusing and painfull. I think I was going to get some M40 i think. They look comfortable and are said to be neutral. but I just read a youtube comment that said that they are the SAO of headphones so now I am unsure.

On a side note what are some good cheap headphones for a 14 year old girl who makes anime AMVs

danke in advance

When you start to project the sickness inside of you out onto the world around you instead of recognizing that the source of it all is you, then yeah, it's bad. But if you can take responsibility and have the self-awareness to accept your demons instead of blaming everything else, then it's fine.

If you can afford it, the HD600 are basically the apex of headphone performance. You'll know you've gotten the best, whereas with other headphones, you'll always have the knowledge that they're only a percentage of the best. What's that worth to you?
>>
>>62015490
no. I dont know much about headphones but considering you can get ones for an order of magnitude less they seem expensive. Are there not Chinese knock offs for half the price?

This feels like shilling. Are you just trying to convince yourself that spending 200on some coils and magnets was worth it?

If I buy these 600s will I even have anything powerful enough to run them they look big? will they work on my phone? the audio from my laptop is bad.

>>62015576
why are you being mean to me? My logic is sound. what am I missing?
>>
>>62015600
The enclosures are big, but in reality the drivers are dinky little 30mm ones. 300 bucks is hardly a price worth "convincing yourself" of, considering some people spend upwards of $1000 on headphones.

my laptop cost that much and so did my phone. I have been quite happy with my 30buck soundmagic IEMs for the past few years. I get that they are very good headphones but how much better are they from say the M40x which I can get for 70. I am by no audiophile and I dont know much about sound stuff can someone explain it in terms of something I can understand like resolution? if my sound magic IEMs with memory foam tips are 720p30fps and 3.99 superstore brand plasticy things that just sit on the ears and sound like rotten bird cries are 144p10fps what would M40s and 600s be?
>>
>>62015809
>my laptop cost that much and so did my phone
I'm not going to pressure you to buy something you can't afford. They are A LOT better than the M40s, they'll sound tinny and cheap compared to the HD600. However, a better idea would be to learn how to EQ so you can correct for FR issues.

If you're gonna buy M40s and later down the line but a couple more headphones then you're better off just buying the 600s and being done with it. If you don't feel that itch, then just learn how to EQ and you'll get great sound for cheap.
