3.125 MHz, 8MB ram with virtual memory. This baby's considerably faster than the Apollo Guidance Computer, and it's small enough to fit underneath a desk. On top of which, it runs the TCP/IP stack that will become the reference for all network stacks in both Linux, Windows and every other modern OS, and which will continue to evolve in FreeBSD. Originally cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of $120,000 -$160,000, and I got it for the price of fetching it.

VAX-11 in its various permutations existed on a lot of universities - BSD, even at the beginning, shipped over 100 installations even for 3BSD, 4.x to many even outside of the US (remember, at this time a university might have 1 or 2 such machines at most, which pales in comparison with the 30 million users on the internet by 1994 and the 3 billion that it's reckoned to have nowadays, I know - but back then there _was_ no internet, and computing was only for people who could write their own programs). DARPA sponsored the TCP/IP implimentation on BSD because it was a particular flavour of Unix that was particularily portable, and it ensured that TCP/IP got put back into Unix.

>>62005260
Attached is one of the single-digit serial number versions which ran at Berkeley.

Mine? Yes. Although its tape drive isn't doing particularily well.

>>62005296
Go read A Quarter Century Of Unix, a book that's now well over 20 years old - probably older than you, and you'll find that BSD was in fact implemented on the VAX-11/45 and was a purchase made by Berkeleys Computer Science, Statistics and Mathematics divisions made shortly before or after New Years, 1974 and required Ken Thompson to dial in over a 300 baud acoustic modem to debug crash dumps. You seem to be mistaking the VAX-11 for the PDP-7, a 16-bit system which Unix was written in PDP assembly on, before it was rewritten in C for the PDP-11. If you want to google your facts, you need to ensure that you're at least copy-paste the facts properly.

Aside from the fact that I've been on image boards since Ayashii when there were no images and it had more in common with USENET or a BBS, there's no such thing as 'fitting in' among nameless posters, because we're all nameless posters.

Marginally. The interface itself is limited to around 1mbit.
>>62005979
The way it formats the USB stick is wonky and nonstandard, using separate partitions for each floppy. Each one is 1.44mb in size but you can still put a smaller image on it and have it show up as the proper size. Your OS will only see the first partition, but the software for the device can access all of them.

I don't browse 4chan very regularly anymore - after 14 years, it feels like I'm too out of touch. I don't think there's any of the old RH crew left, either.

How's this for retro.

I don't think that's WinNuke, though. I can't make the connectin in my head between those beige boxed PCs and Windows 95.

I dunno, beige boxes were the norm around here until late 90s, and even longer in schools. I still remember black floppy and CD drives carrying a small premium just because.

>>
>>62019948
The original creation time on it on my fileserver is from 2007, and http://blog.ivman.com/if-women-ruled-the-world/ supports that it's at least that old.

>>62019967
I was in school IT back in the days of WinNuke and I'll admit that it's so long ago that I don't remember much - but the machines we had in 1995 were Olivetti, to the best of my knowledge. Those beige boxes remind me of early-2000s.

>>62019969
It's a Photoshop from around the time 4chan started, yes - but arguably that's retro to most of the people posting here.

>The original creation time on it on my fileserver is from 2007
Check your shit then, senpai.
The filename says "1479063475580", exclude the last three digits, 1479063475 is the UNIX time code for when this picture was first uploaded to 4chan and you saved it with that name, it says November 2016.

If you say you have been here for 14 years, you DO know that, how imageboards work? Don't you?

anyone know a fast IDE to SD adapter?

Thanks, but you are right. it's only win 3.1.
Maybe i will use it with my Presario...
>>
>>62020210
Depends on the SD card adapter and controller.
Also the PATA controller and cable you use.

PATA/IDE to SD is retarded complex for the same job, just use CF.

The filename on 4chan isn't an epoch, you dumbass. I'm using filename randomization which is part of 4chan X.
Even if it was an epoch, where would the three letters you're arbitrarily excluding come from? Don't try to teach your grandfather how to suck eggs.

It's from 2001 at the very least: http://tesla.rcub.bg.ac.rs/~japan/clanci/trendovi/010913%20Hello%20Kitty%20histerija.htm
>>
>>62020228
Can I then use a CF to SD adapter or will i lose bandwidth?
>>
>>62020260
I did but didn't take a pic and I'm to lazy to go downstairs...
>>
>>62020281
Why do you need SD? CF is a removable media.
>>
>>62020294
because UHS are over 80MB/s and way cheaper per GiB

CF is pretty much phased out so you pay premium for less storage and I don't expect to find it in a couple years.

>I'm using filename randomization which is part of 4chan X.
Excuses, excuses, nice randomizer that so happened to give a proper name that's a relevant timestamp. Specially a recent one.

>Even if it was an epoch, where would the three letters you're arbitrarily excluding come from?
Read the link. The three last digits are randomized to exclude possibilities of the name going to two different files.

>Don't try to teach your grandfather how to suck eggs.
Not only did you fail, hard.
Why is it relevant that you include in every post that you have been here since X? You don't see us do that, while some of us have been here since the beginning too.

>It's from 2001 at the very least:
I know. I'm not saying the picture isn't old, I'm saying why lie that "I saved in in 2007". Do you think that makes you cool?

Reminds me of that UNIX guy from this thread that just had to boast about his machine and make excuses why he can't post about it, digging a deeper bullshit hole each post.
>>
>>62020371
>because UHS are over 80MB/s
A CF card will even easily saturate a PATA controller.
You will never see those speeds in real world practice with IDE/PATA.

>and way cheaper per GiB
4GB cards are around 6€ these days, so many places have old stock of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and even 32GB cards that they sell them for pennies.

>CF is pretty much phased out so you pay premium for less storage and I don't expect to find it in a couple years.
CF is also native PATA instead of a active adapter.
SD cards are good for SCSI, not for PATA.

Get a SATA bridge and SSD then, if you want the absolute best.
>>
>>62020435
ill prob go the sata route later on
(the ssd would cost more than the whole system)

its just for my freedos box so i dont need massive storage or i/o

also i dont even seen CF in the camera section in stores anymore so its all a bit more on ebay and amazon

>also i dont even seen CF in the camera section in stores anymore so its all a bit more on ebay and amazon
Ask, nobody buys them, they don't keep it out anymore, but most places that sell any electronics still have them under the counter.
Unless it's literally a new shop.
>>
ill give it a try next time im out.

thanks for the info

Have you ever wondered why vi has what appears to be a quite arbitrary layout for its navigation keys, or why ~ is an abbreviation for $HOME on Unix-likes? This image demonstrates why.

It's skeumorphism for rubbing something out with an eraser. It's basically a delete key.
