If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

Fine, fuck 'em. I'm coming back to team green. Question is: do I join now and get a 1080/1080TI or do I wait for next gen?

lads, wat do

I want to make the switch to Ryzen (specifically 1600x, already have a 212 Evo to cool it), but the problem is that I'm having a hard time judging whether or not switching to the red team would be worth the bother of getting a new mobo and RAM. I'm currently using a 4690k OC'd to 4.5GHz. Its single-threaded performance is tremendous, but I want anons that have already made the switch to tell me if having triple the threads is worth it.
>>
>>61992473
This cooler is $34.99 on Newegg nigga.... New

Also, consider getting a Trident Z or Flare X over the Ripjaws. Uses Samsung B-Die, works much much better with Ryzen.
>>

Separate line of questioning: does anyone have personal experience with Ryzen and emulation?
>>
is there any discernible difference between Samsung and Intel SSDs? I need a 500gb drive for programs
>>
>>61993001
Kinda. Samsung SSD are higher quality.
>>
>>61993001
Samsung has been the top dog in SSDs forever. Even the RAM they are involved in are better than the rest.
>>
>>61993001
You gotta trust the Koreans on this one. Those slanty-eyed plastic fuckers can sure craft a mighty SSD.
>>
>>61992976

They're very very similiar, you can Google the differences, perhaps with the way they distribute heat. Either way you can't go wrong with either, be sure to get decent timing and MHz, Ryzen likes higher clocks. The Flare is marketed as being 'optimized' for Ryzen, I personally got the Trident but I've seen some info that Flare is hardcoded for Ryzen timings so I'd probably get the Flare
>>
Something that needs to be put in the sticky

>check Craigslist daily for deals
If you live in even a medium-sized city, you can find new, unopened tech all the time for cheap. Lots of people trying to unload stuff for cash and it still has the factory tape on the box. I bought a $600 GTX1080 for 550, a $250 Dell monitor for $110, etc. You can save a lot of cash and find some unexpected upgrades by just browsing the parts/accessories site every evening.

They won't blow up or anything and they're as efficient as whatever rating, can't ask for much more. In my experience the EVGA modularity is much better, though. The corsair I had was pretty half-assed (had some molex cables I couldn't remove)
>>

I've decided i want to buy an rx vega 64 at $699 or less. i know in every way this is the worst deal of the century. and that it barely manages 1080 performance at much higher power consumption. and will cost more money to run in the long run. but my autism. something about a red and black box sitting in my pc is so satisfying. i cant handle the ugly cheap look of 3 gaping fans on my gpu. someone please talk me out of this. why should or should i not buy the rx vega. im genuinely asking for help bros

I'm looking to update cpu+ram+mobo, what'd be better?
Considering Ryzen 1700, RAM 16gb(2x8) 2400Mhz, mobo Asus Prime B350 Plus,
or Ryzen 1600, RAM 16gb(2x8) 3200Mhz, mobo Asus Prime B350 Plus,
or Ryzen 1600, RAM 16gb(2x8) 3200Mhz, mobo MSI X370 Gaming Plus.
To use in multitasking, and some gaming at 1080p with an old amd 270x.
Not looking into overclocking the cpu.
I'm not really sure if I should invest more into the cpu or RAM, or RAM+mobo, I'd like to stay in that price range and get the best bang for that.
>>
>>61994517
Second combo is good enough.
When you say multitasking what do you mean by that? What programs are you gonna be running. Because there is a difference when multitasking is running a video on the 2nd monitor while having a browser open on your first vs rendering 3D models in the background while you do audio editing.
>>
>>61994066

Lmao drop the i7 70k Meme bro, they're good at gaming but Ryzen is negligibly close in that sector and beats it at every category. Grab a Ryzen 7 1700 or 1800x if you want.

>1000w psu
>literally says 425w usage up top
>nigga r u stupid?

Put in an actual respectable board

I don't think you'll need 32GB Ram, I thew in Flare X series RAM instead, it's designed to work very well with Ryzen right out of the box due to the Samsung b-dies.

If you want to fill out your budget get more/bigger ssd.

You're welcome for saving you money.

Np, consider getting an h100i or h100i v2 for the cpu cooling especially since you'll be rendering a bit. Super easy to install just make sure the dimensions of your case will fit. Should be well within your budget now. If you get the h100i you'll need to get the AM4 bracket for the crosshair MB since I don't think it ships with it but the 100i v2 does.
>>
A budget build I'm considering (will re-use case and optical drive) since I don't really game much anymore, but I have a few questions:

- Is it worth it to spend extra on a Ryzen 5 1600 and GTX 1060 or should I just wait for better AM4 CPUs and GPU prices eventually return to a more reasonable level?
- Looking at various other brands having their M.2 slot below the supposed primary PCI-e X16 slot, would having a GPU so close to the M.2 slot affect the SSD's performance and life expectancy?

I used the recommended timings on my kit and it worked just fine. I even tried cutting power from the PC just to see if the settings stay (they did). But, after a week, we had a power outage and the PC failed to boot, BIOS then reset automatically. What happened? Should I blame the RAM or the MB?

Also the HDD I have for a long time now, should I replace it? It doesn't seem broken.

>>
>>61995709
Meh. If you want HDDs, snatch up some of the WD 8TB external hard drives from Best Buy or price match at Fry's or something. Shuck the case and you get an 8TB WD Red. They're 8tb 5400RPM and depending on luck either 256MB or 128MB cache (just check the bottom of the box if you go to brick and mortar store and look for Made in Thailand for the 256MB.) These are currently going for the same price as the drive you linked.

Also, the drive you linked isn't all that great. 7200 RPM isn't as good a spec to throw out as it was before a small SSD became a staple in every build. Plus, that one only has a 128MB cache. You could also be getting a 4TB HGST for this price, which is more reliable.

sorry, former name for Hitachi. They are or at least were the most reliable name in hard drives. They got bought out by WD but I think they still make their drives differently (i.e. Hitachi drives are manufactured differently than WD drives) and are still reliable, I just haven't bought one in a while so idk.

But honestly, you shouldn't care at all about the speed rating of the hard drive unless you're using it as a system drive (which you shouldn't be doing when SSDs exist and are affordable). Honestly, the best thing you could do is get a small (120~500GB) SSD and scoop up one of them Best Buy 8tb external drives, take it out of the case, and install OS and programs on SSD and store media and files on the HDD

You can get faster RAM for about the same price. Not sure how much you care but
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sykwrH/gskill-memory-f43200c16d16gtzb is only $4 more dollars. Yeah it's 16 CAS but I doubt you'd notice

The cooler master is only marginally better (like 10° C difference at full load) than the stock cooler. If you need an aftermarket cooler, some anon recently made an in-depth Ryzen infographic that's been floating around here for a couple threads now, and in it he compared some coolers, look at those instead.

Also, you can get a 750W PSU for the same price https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rt8H99/evga-power-supply-210gq0750 (it's semi-modular but only the mobo cable is non-removable. I actually have this one and it's really good)

You could run War Thunder 1080p max on a card from three generations ago (depending on the framerate you want), a 1060 or even a 1050Ti would work.

It hurts even more when you read reviews for them and people are saying it's a great card for under $250. I'm sure it was. Also has Rocket League EVER been $60?

You can't upgrade only the mobo
Grab a Ryzen 1600 or 1700 and a B350 board (MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon/Krait or Asrock Pro4) or X370 board if you want something fancy (recommend the gigabyte X370 gaming 5)

Any good? Prices and availability in my country are beyond retarded, so I'm just trying to piece together something. Gonna add HDD later.

Need a PC for photo and some video editing, not interested in gayming.

What's a good 2.5" SATA-USB caddy brand to get? Need to put a 1TB backup SSD in it so I want something decent quality that won't fuck it up or break easily.
>>
It's looking like Polaris prices aren't dropping any time soon, and I can still break even or profit a little bit on my Rx480. I'm not going to get gtx 1070 money for it, but I can easily afford a 1070.

Should I go for it? My only thing holding me back is my freesync, 1080p, 144hz monitor. Sync tech doesn't really matter when you're at 60ish hz, but when you are dipping between 144, down to 100, etc, the sync tech really does help keep things consistent.

Switch to B350 mobo.
You can get SSD instead of m.2
With the money saved from those two you should get 2x8gb 3200mhz RAM.

No, that is what happens when you are lazy and/or retarded and don't clean out your case.

I'm considering a 1080 Ti for my 1080p@144Hz monitor but online reviews and my friends are disagreeing with this decision and recommending me either a 1070 or regular 1080. Why is this? Looking at benchmarks the 1080 is barely keeping an average of 120~130FPS (max settings) with the latest modern games, let alone the 1070.
>>
>>61998676
That mouse is disgustingly overpriced, lawl, but I'm partial to the Nzxt s340 Elite at $99. Any of the Phanteks Enthoo line might fit your aesthics. And then there's always good ol sexy Fractal. They just came out with the glass window Meshify C that just got a bunch of reviews.
>>
>>61998713
Just throw your money out the window if you feel like it. Actually why not buy TWO GTX 1080 TIs if you feel you need 1080p future proof fps speeds.
>>
https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/TdXcpb

Any improvements on this?
>>
>>61998713
Those are using MAX graphics. 8x antialiasing, Ultra shadows, other unnecessary crap. If you want to pay an extra $200+ difference from a 1080 just for that, sure, go ahead. If you care about texture quality and whatnot that much, you may want to instead get a 1440o monitor, and sell your 1080 display to a counterstrike fag or something.

I'm thinking of switching my psu, since it creates a lot of heat. I'm thinking of getting this one https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438094 .

Kiwi dollars are worth less than burger dollars you know, that said the market is fucked as badly as anywhere else and that's the best I could find without sacrificing too much performance.

>>

>>
>>61999068
is your psu possibly not well ventilated? Dusty? Failing?
>>
>>61999094
There is enough space in the back and a few months ago I cleaned my pc inside out.
I noticed especially now in the summertime the whole heat that comes from my pc is the PSU. It's heating up the whole room like a sauna.

Maybe it is "failing"? It already runs for 5 years. And in the last 1 or 2 years, I noticed the extreme heat.

fixed your fix. NEX units aren't great. Overpriced motherboard. Cooler is just personal preference. Anon could also get away with a big heatsink instead of liquid, and using a Define C or Meshify C instead which is slightly smaller.
>>
>>61999470
Meh agree with the PSU and cooler not with the Mobo, Ryzen works very well with Crosshair boards but frankly I got the crosshair because of VR also and I need all the USB slots I can get which the Crosshair offers a fuck ton of.

I have a skylark i5 on a z170 motherboard but I'm pretty sure the board is dead. If I clear the bios with dips witches then I can boot into the bios and configure everything and on the diagnostic page all my other hardware is recognized correctly but when I save and exit and try to reboot I just get a no signal message on my monitor. I also have to mash the power button for the machine to start up and the fans all sound like they're struggling. There are several little black boxes on the board and one of them looks discoloured, ie burned out. Anyway my question is will a z270 support my slake i5 and will windows 10 suit the bed over the hardware change?
>>
>>61999861
The skylake should work because it's the same socket, and no win 10 shouldn't shit the bed because I've swapped between AMD and the install was fine.
