Guys got a question for you. I have a 1u server that I want to use as my all-round microservices host.
On my own laptop I've got vagrant, which is really nice as I get to have a separate vm for every project I'm doing. I can spin them up very quickly, immediately have ssh access, all the nice things straight from the command line with easy commands.
I was wondering if it was possible to have something similar, except that it controls VMs on the server, instead of my local machine. Preferably without SSHing in first (I could just use vagrant remotely then) so that I don't have to do ssh-in-ssh for the instances.
I'd also like, obviously, the usual management tools like a web console and base images and stuff.

What would be the right distro/software for this?

No pic because not at home.

Dell PowerEdge T410
2x Xeon 5660 (12C / 24T)
64GB DDR3 ECC / REG
2x Intel 60GB SSD (RAID 1 on Perc H100)
6x Western Digital RE4 4TB (RAID5 on Perc H700)
4x 500GB SSD / 8x 1TB HDD (JBOD, split evenly across 2 Perc H200's, in 6 drive 5.25" mobile racks)
NVidia Quadro 2000 for Hyper-V GPU acceleration on VDI VM's.
500GB NVME SSD for local disk storage of VDI VM's

RAID 5 is just Plex storage, and not critical.

SSD / HDD set is tiered, and presented mostly to Hyper-V as RAID 10, with exceptions carved out where needed.

I know, I should upgrade to something newer, but the server without drives (except the 500GB NVME / 60GB SSD's) was $50 USD. I'll upgrade when it dies.

dumb question, but what sort of hardware is necessary for a home server? to be able to access several hard drives (or even host a smallish web site) does it need something like an i3 or do they require a heavy chipset?
>>
>>61993132
if your homeserver is just a NAS, an i3 with a bunch of ram (8GB min) and freenas will do fine. If you want to run VMs, get something that has more logical processors (afaik i3 only has 4)

Is that fucking duct tapped on? Just put it on a rack
>>
>>61993363
Yes it is. The cable is too short to have anywhere else and it doesn't fit in the cabinet. I built this computer from parts found in dumpsters. The only new parts is the NIC and the HDDs (two 5TB ones in RAID1), and the rest is just someone elses garbage but my gold.

Dust caked trash. Top optical drive slot was missing the cover so I took one that was from a different case I don't have anymore, I shoved it in there and it sort of fit. One front USB port is crushed, 5 HDDs and only 1 SATA cable. Graphics card isn't screwed into the IO slot. 2 slot covers are missing. The PSU has 10 SATA power connections and all but 2 are broken, not my doing ( bought the PSU used).

Back at home ~300 miles away I have a full fledged machine with ZFS and the like setup that I pretty much don't use anymore.

I instead just transferred ~700GB or so of movies and junk here and turned my X220 into a little server.

Run docker, lxc and junk for plex, grafana, influxdb, and whatnot. I have enough RAM that I can start playing with Hadoop/Hive in docker for work on it. Eventually I'll need to get a 16GB kit for it though.

Explain the box with the noctua fan in it.
>>
How do you get so many HDDs together inside a motherboard? Isn't there this thing that MOBOs have a limit to SATA sockets? There's PCI but damn some people here have like fourteen HDDs/SSDs. How come?
>>
>>61994092
I hate having the er-x, modem, switch and wap strewn about so I shoved it into a box, which works but it gets hot so I took some spare fans on plugged them up. Keeps them cool.

Either use an old shitbox or rent hosting/colo somewhere. "Homelab" setups are autistic and impractical.
