I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. OP is the reason why we should stop encouraging casuals to use GNU/Linux.
If person in question tells you that he/she plays video games or main activities are browsing or using some proprietary software, this should be clear sign to stop pushing Linux to them.
