>>61980675
not worth for $50 bucks imo, at max pay ~$40 for mint condition and $30 for used condition. easy libreboot process (no soldering required), but rather slow, limited to 3gb ram (chipset limit) and CPU is soldered to mainboard. also its resolution doesnt even hit 720x1280. kinda shit nowadays but if all you do is shitpost on 4chan and do light browsing and coding in general you should be alright

fn being on the left makes the most sense, the rest are valid criticisms. fn being on the left means that if you sort of 'ignore' it, everything is in the right place. sticking something on the end makes more sense than jamming it in between two things. you're probably thinking that remembering the bottom left key is ctrl is most important, but for someone who uses ctrl/super/alt about equally, or super the most possibly, I'd rather know those are next to each other than care fn got bumped in there.
I've used mechanical keyboards for a while now, so I guess ideally I would put the fn on the right in place of the menu key.
>>61980751
>have fun with your proprietary bios man
This is a good point. We should mention Libreboot and compatible Libreboot machines in the OP.
I'm extremely excited for Libreboot support on the X220T. I heard it'll probably happen before the end of the year. Do you think it's worth flashing coreboot for now?
>>61980643
Which model are you comparing it to? Superior is a relative term.

I really don't think that matters as much as having Intel ME running wild on your machine.

Reposting from last thread!
Here's what's left of my X201! I bought a X200 on ebay with a decent processor and swapped the innards around, here are the specs:
- 8GB's of RAM
- 250GB SSD
- Core2 P8700
- Librebooted
- Japanese keyboard
- Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Card
- HV121WX4-120 Matte Display
All running a completely FOSS operating system! My daily driver is complete!

Is an x200 without battery worth 90-125 on ebay? It seems like x220's have gone way up in price lately
>>61983948
No. You can get a X200 on ebay easily for less than $60. Your price range looks better for a X220. My girlfriend got her X220T for $90 on ebay, and it's in great condition.
>>61983703
Off-lease equipment is plentiful. You might end up with a beat-down example; "refurbished" doesn't mean that much on Amazon.
For work we purchased 30 refurb dells; out of that about 5 had serious problems.
Do cheap thinkpads with nordic keyboards even exist? All the cheap ones I find have US/UK layouts. I just need a 300-400e one for programming at uni.
>>61983992
Cool beans. As I understand it, the x200 can be librebooted whereas the x220s aren't there yet?
>>61984140
UK layout is ISO, so it'll work with a nordic layout.
Just avoid US because it's ANSI and it'll miss out some of the keys.
>>61984146
Correct. Apparently some progress was made on the front of the XX20 series, but another roadblock was met and we have yet to see a release date. I wouldn't bet on it being very soon is all.
Has anybody used the SquareTrade plans sold on ebay? I see the option on thinkpads that are possibly broken/untested.
If I was getting a T430, what would I regret less?
The 1366x768 with dedicated graphics or 1600x900 with only integrated graphics?
I'm still trying to find a cheap laptop. is Lenovo 110-15ACL good enough to play shitty browser games and watch anime? my other option I think is HP 15-ba009dx. I need something by this afternoon so I really don't have time to look around.
>>61984352
Personally I would go for the higher resolution. I don't do any gaming though. I like the flexibility in having more pixels available.
>>61984366
Are you buying something locally? Most shitty $300+ laptops from wally world or staples work well enough these days.
I used to work a help desk for college students, this is my experience.
I've been searching for hours trying to find an old model of thinkpad and the trail keeps going cold, I used it years ago and it's definitely not a model Lenovo sell anymore.
I know it's a longshot but can somebody help me solve this mystery?
Definite features it had.
>rotating hinge for the screen, but it twisted, it wasn't a folding one
>could be used like a tablet and you could draw on it
>port on the right side to hold a stylus pen (many thinkpads I see don't have this)
>surprisingly decent for gaming, you could run C&C generals on this thing no problem
>screen wasn't tiny, would have been bigger than 10 inches
Thanks in advance.
>>61981570
coreboot is superior for newer machines. libreboot wont be able to fully remove the ME(me) soo just dont. and because of the complicated libreboot process on the X200t I dont think the X220t will be easy to libreboot either. so imo don't, just flash corebooty

>>61980647
>how about battery life on the 2720qm? waa that negatively affected?

This is with Prime95 stress test running, Actual / Min (Idling) / Maximum reached. Temps were way better than i expected imo so i'm upgrading to a quad core processor as soon as i see something cheap pop up on eBay.
About the noise no idea since i don't know how to measure it accurately but as a reference it's noticeable in a somewhat quiet room while being quieter than the fan in my T420 with both laptops running Prime95.
>>61985398
i5 4210 and no iGPU here, I've never seen the mobo/CPU go higher than 70 under 100% load. I haven't tested synthetics though. You can always swap the heatsink for the one on the iGPU model if you have issues. It's pretty quiet too, thanks to being pretty thicc.
>>61984352
Both screens are garbage, you're going to want to swap it out with the X1 Carbon 1st gen or Alienware M14x R2 screen either way

hey /g/uys, my sister's laptop just became a residential maggot beach surfer and we're looking at a thinkpad for 900$. yesterday i heard from you guys that the quality drop was obvious between the 2/4 30s and 40s and i wanted to know if the current generations are back to being at least passable? otherwise we'll look for other options. current budget's 900$ and the t470p or something similar is available for 940$, a slight stretch out of the previously detailed price range. her classes start on wednesday, so there's not enough time to go full /g/entooman and set an t420/x200 or some such.

Why are people so into the older models? None of them have USB C or the latest gen processors. The newer models are far better in terms of being future proof. ThinkPads are not MacBooks and MacBooks are not ThinkPads.

X240 has much slower ulv processor and many dont like the smaller keyboard and lessened travel distance
Although it does have a higher res screen option
>>61988210
This is false
In fact when I got the x220 palmrest it never quite fit just right, the seams stuck out and the bottom edge just doesn't line up with the rest of the laptop quite right, and there is a texture difference between it and the rest of the x230
Instead, just cut the slots on the x230 palmrest to be twice as tall using an exacto knife
>>61981802
>FOSS operating system

>>61988015
You can if you modify your palmrest and flash the embedded controller to fix some dead keys (unlike BIOS flashing this can be done easily with only software)
However as someone who has swapped I must say the difference isn't as amazing as most people say, other than the layout changes the X230 stock keyboard has very nice feeling keys and they honestly feel more firm and sturdy to type on than the X220 board does
I do way more typos after swapping to X220
Fact is the X230 chiclet keys still curve in just like regular keyboard keys so it's miles ahead of other Dell and Apple and HP chiclet shit
Because of the flat keys I believe it also has further travel distance than X220
Really though, the negligible difference is probably more because the X220 board itself doesnt feel great compared to say the T60 or T42 era

I just used Aliexpress to get mine because of free worldwide shipping. Aliexpress is pretty strict with these things, if you don't get what you asked for and have evidence you pretty much get full refund 99% of the time.
HWiNFO lets you see the exact model of the screen on Windows.
>>61987379
But why use anything from X201?
>>61987906
What if I plug in a wacom drawing tablet and use its pen ?

>>61988384
If you're just going to use a separate tablet then it doesn't matter what computer it's plugged into...
>>61988299
I'm using Debian with no proprietary software.
>>61988349
Because the X200 and X201, besides the lower chassis being slightly different and the motherboard chipset, use the exact same hardware and are both interchangeable. I used the hardware that was in the best shape because of this. The X200 I purchased wasn't that pretty, so I used most of the parts from my X201.

Maybe eGPU

>>61987862
>>61988270
Actually found a X201 as well, slightly more expensive. How does it compare to the other ones?
>>61987723
You may find the resolution limiting (1366x768) and maybe the pressure sensitivity (256 levels) but it's a nice laptop still
You might want to look for Fijutsu T902 instead, it has a higher resolution (1600x900) and better color gamut
Both Thinkpad X230T and Fujitsu T902 are pretty beefy machines that can both run the latest illustrator with no sweat
Really though it will all come down to your own preference as an artist whether it's good enough for your needs or not. Some artists don't care if they have 256 or 2048 pressure sensitivity, others can tell for sure
I think the X230T can be found cheap enough that it's worth a try, if you don't like it just sell it again or use it as a regular laptop
>>61988518
If it's more expensive, don't bother at all
>>61988435
Ok, yeah I sounded dumb there.
I more meant is the display good enough to show detail.

>>61988605
It's supposed to be 95% sRGB
That said like >>61988525 said you might appreciate the resolution of Fujitsu Lifebook T902 better
In either case both T902 and X230T support other Wacom pens (but I dont think angular sensors will work, just pressure)

https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec
>>61988693
Apologies, X220/X230 has like 70%
It's the Fujitsu that has it in the 90s
So basically depends whether you want to spend $150 (X230T) or $250 (T902)

no, that's like saying a screen is a screen as long as it displays colors
or a cpu is a cpu as long as it does computations...
there are high quality and low quality battery cells, they are not all made equally
Lenovo doesn't make the batteries themselves they outsource them to Sanyo, Panasonic, LG, etc. They have a certain quality to uphold or else manufacturers will stop buying from them.
No-name chink batteries are cheap for two reasons. They can get them straight out of the factory and/or they get the batteries from the low quality bin that the big manufacturers don't want to use.
>>61989467
>no, that's like saying a screen is a screen as long as it displays colors

i hate the trackpad/right- left-buttons, keyboard and usb ports (especially compared to a t61 for example, which i had before)
the trackpad has 'bobbles' on it which seem to make it less responsive and smooth
the right- left buttons are right on the bottom edge of the laptop so i can't get a full finger on them

and the usb ports are very stiff/small

Anyone here own a 220t? Which distro pairs well with it? Or any convertible laptop for that matter.
>>61991604
P51
Upgrade ram yourself you lazy fuck
>>61991678
No linux works with touchscreen very well
>>61991682
what is difference in practice between xeon and i7?
>>61991678
linux subsystem for windows 10
>>61991717
Like any other cpu that is more powerful than another, it's faster
>>61991669
it is worth putting an ssd in anything
>>61991702
Shit.
>>61991732
There's a $70 difference, is it worth it?
>>61991732
This
Even on SATA 1 speeds it's a notable improvement
>>61991731
wrong. There are Xeons less powerful than i7s
>>61991717
If they are equally specced they are the same except the Xeons are manufactured under Intel's supervision and they offer extended support. They're all about redundancy.
>>61991742
you can always take it out and put it in another machine in the future
>>61991742
If you want browsers to open in 5 seconds instead of 50 seconds on that old ass laptop, yes
And you can get ssds for cheaper than $70
>>61991750
>wrong. There are Xeons less powerful than i7s
Not the ones that are options for p51
Has anyone met a fellow thinkpad enthusiast irl?
I met a grad student from MIT that had two t410's. He was pretty knowledgeable about their specs and quite autistic, so I think he got it from here.
>>61991760
Link to one?
>>61991793
My dad is.
>>61991717
In P51's case, Xeon has faster multi core speed, more powerful iGPU (due to having more memory for it), and ECC RAM support

You decide

And if you don't want to gamble with refurbished just get a 64GB SSD instead. Plenty for installing windows and some programs on, definitely plenty for linux. If you need more storage get an hdd caddy to replace the disk drive and put an hdd in there. But the speed boost from having os on an ssd is priceless
>>61991840
Doesn't it need a case?
>>61991946
No
It plugs into the sata ports, that's all it needs
>>61991959
>>61991946
Although it does need a Micro-SATA to SATA adapter
>>61991959
Isn't it too small for the caddy?
>>61992008
Dude SSDs weigh like nothing, think of ram sticks, it will be held up by the sata plug itself no sweat
>>61992141
It just seems dangerous if I'm moving the laptop around a lot.
>>61992141
No. Even an SSD needs to be tightly secured. If it doesn't have a case it's gonna rattle around in the laptop and possibly even slip out of the sata port.
>>61992149
>>61992161
Bunch of slack-jawed faggots around here
>>61992008
Then buy a 2.5in caddy for it
You can find one on ebay for like $5

T410, i5 2.4ghz, 100gb HDD, 4gb ram, short-life battery. About 180 dollars (600 BRL). Good deal? Will be my first thinkpad.
>>61992228
I suppose I had that coming. Still, it spends a lot of its time in bags being moved, so I'd rather be safe.
>>61992317
>100gb HDD
>4gb ram
good deal but you wanna swap those the moment you get it

8gb ram and 1tb HDD?
Well I pan to but to be honest I can live with these for a bit. I'm planning on installing gentoo and making it as lightweight as possible. It'll be mostly for studying. I do my heavy lifting on the desktop.
>>61992448
SSD, anon.
>>61991840
That's a sweet deal, thanks m8.
Has there ever been a good 5:4 laptop?
Got paid today, should I treat myself to a 250GB 850 Evo for my T420 or another ThinkPad?
>>61992864
if you don't already have an ssd then that
>>61992772
Some very old Thinkpads came in 5:4 variants.
>>61980629
Is this a good deal for $95 USD?
X200
> Core2 Duo 2.4 GHz
> 2GB RAM
> 80GB HDD
I Already own a T420, so I think I don't need another Corei5 as a secondary machine.
>>61993022
not really since you can get X201, X220, and X230's for under $120
>>61993003
Which ones? How useless are they now?
>>61993055
770X and 770Z seem to be the last models to have it. They're Pentium IIs, not much you can do with them besides running old software from the time.
>>61993116
Any non-ThinkPad laptops?
>>61993050
I'm from Mexico, and the Chinkpads are a bit expensive here
> Because le Corei5 meme, no matter if i'ts a 1st. gen. one
>>61991717
Nigga do you want TOP/10 performance or not?
>wants TOP performance
>bitches about whether or not the xeon being faster than the i7 is worth it
It's more top
I dunno what the fuck you need TOP for but TOP means FUCKING TOP
Will a 128GB SSD be big enough for my anime and eroges?
What Alienware screen am I supposed to get for my T420?
